This was a fun picture book to read because it is all about playing with your food and filled with bright, colorful pages! It would be a great resource for Preschool teachers to use when teaching a theme about food or animals. This book is also perfect for parents with young children because it would keep the little ones busy by copying the designs on the page or creating their own food face. Then they could eat their creation for snack time!

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
A book with faces made of food? Calm down my stomach! I definitely wanted to try this one and I have to say my stomach is now even more hungry. 😛
I do wonder if the book actually starts were it started at mine? Mine just starts right at the watermelon piggy. No cover of the book. No introduction. It was a bit confusing and I even tried re-downloading it. Oh well. I should be used to files from NG being a bit wonky.
The book is a cute one though! Each two pages feature an animal (sometimes even two). Their faces/heads are made of yummy foods and their bodies and surroundings are scribblies/drawings. I am sure that it will be a delight to, while reading, try to make these animals. There are no instructions on how to make them, but they seem quite easy to copy and what helps is that at the end of the book you get a grocery list of what each animal is made up of. Quite often you could see what they were from just looking, but I am definitely happy they added this list.
With each animal I got more and more hungry and I was just about to reach out and test if I could just stick my hand through the screen to get those nommy animals in my tummy. I love the creativity that went into all these animals and I loved how diverse the food was. From fruits to bread to veggies. I was looking forward to each animal to see what would be next. What food, but also what animal.
I am fairly certain this book will be a delight for many kids. You can read this during lunch and make some nommy animal faces and then eat them (oh boy, this sounds so gruesome, teehee). I would recommend it.

This is absolutely the most adorable book and I recommend it highly. Who knew that food could be so entertaining?
This title brings new meaning to play with your food! The youngest children will enjoy seeing the fun animals that are created from common foods like bread, cheese or strawberries. There are cows, kittens, monkeys, pigs and more!
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.

Food Faces. By Deanna F. Cook. 2020. Storey Publishing (ARC eBook).
Kids will really enjoy looking at the pictures of animals creatively constructed with healthy fruits, vegetables and breads. Puns and rhymes are scattered throughout as well to add to the fun. Can’t determined every ingredient that went into creating a pig, lion or fox? An ingredient list for each creation is in the back if needed. An extremely cute book!

How fun! Such a unique book, to teach about both food and animals. It had our daughter giggling from start to finish! Plus, the ending gives you a chance to tap;k through all the animals and foods together. What a lovely little book. We really enjoyed it!

Such a delight! "Food Faces" is an adorable (and delicious) little book showing colorful food creations.
What I loved about this book is that it's a multidimensional platform for learning: we've got very bright colors, animal names as well as recipes which you can make at home with your child. The animal "Food Faces" are also super simple to make, which is really important when you want your child to get engaged but also not lose interest quickly.
Finally, I really appreciated that the ingredients listed are easy and widely available, so I don't have to think of substitutions.
Highly recommended for, I would say, 2-5-year-olds!

Board Book
I received an electronic ARC from Storey Publishing through NetGalley.
So much fun for toddlers and preschoolers to look at these pictures and figure out what foods were used to create the animals. A guide is given at the end of the book.
Great to look at as a family or class.

Food Faces is an adorable board book for the very youngest and their caretakers with edible sculptures in appealing shapes. Due out 15th Sept 2020 from Storey Publishing, it's 22 pages and will be available in board book and ebook formats.
This is such a simple and appealing little book with a myriad of uses. I would venture that the vast majority of babies and young children love the 'animal noises' game. This one provides ample opportunity for onomatopoeic play with pictures of pigs, monkeys, dogs, bugs, cats, owls, foxes and more, as well as a cute "identify the foods used" game with a picture gallery at the end, as well as a lovely opportunity to engage older toddlers in re-creating the pictured snacks in the kitchen with grownup supervision of course. What a lovely fun little book full of healthy snacks. The photography is very clear and easy to understand. There are no construction notes included in the book, but they're not necessary.
This would be a superlative gift, excellent classroom or library group selection for activity groups, a wonderful parent/caregiver activity, or even for babysitters and child-minders looking to up their playfood activity time game with their small charges.
I loved this one. It's simple but so well done.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Silly and Perhaps Educational Food Fun
Yes, this is silly, and of course, we're so often told not to play with our food when we are children. But this is certainly a fun and creative way to play with food: making animal faces and insects. Especially if young children are out of school, this could actually be a fun book to springboard into both creativity and learning, as the book shows animals' faces created just with different fruits, vegetables, and foodstuffs (and also candy eyes). You could have fun with it in several ways. You could actually just read through the book, seeing if your child can figure out what each face is made of. Luckily for parents or caregivers, the author tells in the back of the book what makes up every face and insect in the book. Of course, you can choose to attempt to recreate these food faces, which I think the children would really enjoy—and could perhaps get them to eat some healthy fruits and vegetables as they create. You could extend the idea further and see what other animals you can come up with. This book certainly has the potential to be a lot of fun.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Read
July 19, 202359 (but something like 30 times, repetitively, in the last three days since checking it out for this week at Grandma Daycare, and certainly more to come): Food Faces: A Board Book by Deanna F. Cook
First, Grandma says: Fun book! That the faces are all made of food is less interesting to the 14-month-old audience than they are to the grandma reading it, but she then also questions whether it would ever be worth the intense work to make those faces in the food for how quickly they'd be devoured...or maybe it would be, given how much the audience appreciates the page-turning and sounds we--okay, again, Grandma--makes for each animal. That's what brings the big smiles to his face: the lion roaring the cat meowing. So that is all to say that clearly the well-crafted food faces, one big point of the book, are convincing to both of us!
We do struggle to connect all of the bug "sounds" to reality...but do enjoy counting the tomatoes...and we are left to wonder as so many others have before us: what does a fox say???!
Next, my young reading audience reports (in his own words):

This is a gorgeous children's board book. There is a variety of animals made out of an assortment of food items. It would be brilliant for children to identify the foods in each animal and maybe even have a go at creating their own versions at home!
A great inspiration for cooking fun that is packed with creativity. Though it doesn't provide step-by-step instructions to make the food faces, they aren't really needed! I can see this book being a hit with families, especially whilst we're stuck inside!

My daughter and I really enjoyed reading this awesome children's book. It had a lot of great photographs of animals that were made using pieces of fruit and vegetables. It was very interesting and I look forward to trying out some of these cute food recipes. We enjoyed looking at the photos, talking about the animals, talking about each type of food which made up each animal and talking about the colours of each piece of food. I highly recommend this book and perhaps it would help children who are fussy eaters to explore more healthy food options.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

My daughter is three and I am always on the lookout for fun ways to introduce her to new foods as she tends to try and stick to the same ones
I thought that the cat and dog faces looked great and they are easy for me to have a go at as we have everything we need in the cupboards/fridge already so will be having a go at them this week – fingers crossed!
This is a fab little book and full of inspiration – 4 stars from me – only wish that there had been a few more faces to look at too – I really liked the guide at the end confirming what they were made with though

This simple boardbook leaves a lot of space for interaction. Throughout the book we see animals made from different food. There are asides asking questions like counting things or asking what something is, as well as including animals sounds (always a winner with little kids) and in the back there are lists of all the ingredients used in the artwork so that kids (and parents) can recreate them at home. Simple, cute, fun.

This is a very cute book for babies or very young kids. It's basically just cute food photos with no much text besides what the face is (pig, monkey, cow). It's a very adorable book and it has about 13 different animal's faces and the little ones will love it. At the end you can see what kinda food they used to make the faces. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review

Food Faces is an adorable board book for young ones and not-so-young ones! With fruits and veggies, nuts, cheerios, cheese and chocolate chips, kiddos can create bright and silly animal faces or beautiful butterflies and more. So play with your food: get creative with that kiwi and pineapple, tomatoes and olives. Have fun! This book would make a perfect birthday gift!

Thank you Net Galley for letting me review this children's book. I think this book is super cute and creative. I like how it does a little story and recipes. I don't recommend it as an e-reader is it broken up because you can not get a complete picture of the story. . The book itself will be super cute. I will recommend this book to our library.

In this book kids will learn foods and animals as the two mix in this unique book combination showing animals made out of fruits!
It was vibrant in colours so will also teach them that too as well as draw their attention it's a simple but effective idea to learn multiple things at a time!
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!

I love to use board books in speech therapy with my developmentally delayed preschool population. It's hard to see some of the pictures in the kindle app, but the appear to be beautiful. I love the line drawings paired with the food faces, the questions, and also the recipes at the end. I would recommend this book to parents and educators! Kids will have a lot of fun with it.
