I read the first in the Alyssa Chalmers series, The Case Of The Missing Bride, a while ago now so I was excited to hear that there was a second coming out! Don’t worry if you’ve not read the first it can easily be read as a standalone.

Glittering Death is set in British Columbia against the backdrop of the gold rush in 1862, where every man that was able tried their hand at prospecting in the hopes of finding gold.

Alyssa and her friends arrive at Run’s End where they find themselves face to face

I loved the first book, The Missing Bride, which introduced us to Alyssa Chalmers and a group of young women travelling to British Columbia to marry. The follow up is just as good....if not better as we now get to catch up with Alyssa and discover who they where all actually marrying! Nothing ever goes to plan and as the title suggests Alyssa is back on the case soon enough! A great historical crime story for me anyway

Glittering Death (Alyssa Chalmers mysteries book 2) by Carmen Radtke 4.5*
The year is 1862 and a group of late teenage girls have finally made their journey by boat from Australia to Canada to meet prospective husbands in the form of gold miners working there. They are mostly orphans selected by the Church who have no other hope of improving their stations in life. They are accompanied by Matron, a young widow, to shield them unsavoury advances from the crewmen, and, together with five paying

Safely on dry land after an eventful sea voyage, murder included (see my review of The Case of the Missing Bride), Alyssa Chalmers must negotiate the new direction her life is taking. The group of brides head towards their new potential husbands and Matron weds her onboard love.
Rosie made her decision on board and runs off with her lover only to be abandoned days later. She follows the group to the town and secures a job at the inn but soon the publican is found dead and she is their prime

Glittering Death is the follow on to The Case Of The Missing Bride. It does read as a stand alone though if you haven’t had the pleasure of reading it.

Alyssa and the brides have finally reached their destination and given a warm welcome. It’s all quite an exciting time with endless opportunities for many of them. That is before there is a murder which leaves the town in turmoil.

Alyssa is a likeable protagonist who is quite forward thinking for a woman in her times. As in the last book, she takes

Having thoroughly enjoyed The Case of the Missing Bride, I was eager to read the next instalment in the story – and it didn’t disappoint. The remaining brides have now arrived in British Columbia, where the Gold Rush is ongoing and the bridegrooms are waiting. It was lovely to catch up with the characters, especially Alyssa, and find out who they were marrying. Of course, not everything went according to plan, as gold might glitter but death, especially when it’s murder, doesn’t. A charming cosy ...more

I loved this book! Having read and really enjoyed the first book in the series, The Case of the Missing Bride, I was very keen to find out what happened next to the wonderful characters, particularly feisty Alyssa, brooding doctor Mark and the charming Mr Kendrick. Ms Radtke does not disappoint, giving us more of the characters we love while introducing some interesting newcomers and a brand new mystery in a fantastic setting - the Canadian gold rush! It’s a fast, easy and really fun read, and I ...more

This is the second in the series and the second book I've read by Carmen Radtke. I'm looking forward to reading more. A nice murder mystery (if there is such a thing!) but with elements of other genres - history/social commentary and a bit of romance thrown in there too. Recommended.

A charming and well-written mystery set in mid-19th century Canada. The story flows smoothly, the characters are interesting, and I didn't spot who the murderer was. There's a good sense of place: a pioneering gold-mining town in Canada comes alive as the book goes on. Alyssa, the heroine, is a sympathetic character, and I hope there'll be another book in this series so we can follow her into her new life. Thoroughly engaging.

A fabulous follow on from The Missing Bride - if you loved the first, do not hesitate to get this ever so well conceived sequel! If you haven’t read the first - what are you waiting for?
I think I loved this one even more than the first instalment and devoured it it in one sitting - some of the relationships have matured, the setting is brimming with frontier spirit and atmosphere, it was lovely to see what happened to the returning characters and meet some new and interesting players and the
