The concept of this illustrated children's book really appealed to me. It's inspired and based on the childhood of a Swedish artist Berta Hansson (1920-1994) during the period in her life when she was 12 years old and just wanted to be outdoors in nature or painting or making birds out of clay.

Så fin! Grät nästan. Vill köpa och läsa den för mina systerdöttrar och så småningom min brorson.
Wow! What an incredible book! The Bird Within Me tells the story of a young girl 'Hansson' living in Sweden with her family, her mother who is dying and her father who wants her to work on the family farm! However, Berta's hopes and dreams of becoming an artist take over her life!

Superfin berättelse om konstnären Berta Hanssons kamp för att få gå i skolan.
Fantastiskt fin, både berättelsen och illustrationerna. Sorglig också. Det är vackert med barnböcker som vågar berätta och känna, som kan tilltala både barn och vuxna. Fågeln i mig flyger vart den vill är, för mig, en berättelse om ensamhet, längtan och sorg, om vikten av de vuxna som finns i ens liv, om att få bli förstådd. Hoppas många mellanstadieelever får läsa den här och prata om vad som är viktigt för dem.

Detta är en annorlunda barnbok, som snarare är biografisk än skönlitterär. Den fångar in läsaren med ett enkelt skriftspråk men mer komplext bildspråk. Det händer mycket i illustrationerna som gör det värt att ägna lite extra tid åt att titta på dem och låta dem berätta.

This is a truly inspirational book! It tells the story of a young girl living in Sweeden with her family. Her mother is sick and her father wants her to stay at home. Berta, on the other hand wants to pursue her dreams as an artist!
The illustrations are stunning and this really is a beautiful book for all ages.

Miljön är norrländsk landsbygd strax efter första världskriget. Där är kynnan (kossorna), fäbon, källarbacken, skogen, vedspisen, lungsoten… Det är lågmält och realistiskt, och samtidigt helt fantastiskt att de stora drömmarna finns i en liten flicka i en liten by i norra Sverige. En liten flicka som tror så mycket på sig själv och sina drömmar att hon vågar göra det som inte många skulle – att stå upp för sig själv och protestera.

En underbar bok baserad på konstnären Berta Hanssons brev, dagböcker och målningar om hennes uppväxt och väg till konstnärsskapet under tidigt 1900-tal. Både text och bild är väldigt fina, enkla men fulla av uttryck och känslor. Jag blir rörd när jag läser och nyfiken på att läsa mer om och se mer av Berta Hansson.

I loved this book so much. I'd never heard of Berta Hansson, but this book has inspired me to find out more. The illustrations really draw you in and make you feel part of the story, and empathetic towards the main character, Berta. It is a story of aspiration, of being different and pursuing your dreams, no matter how challenging. I want to be more like her. Very enjoyable read!
