This one was pretty good. It had some real cliches but I suppose that's to be expected in a children's book. It was entertaining and a fast read.

How I choose my rating:
1* Didn't like it at all. These are rare as I usually just don't finish any book I dislike this much.
2** Didn't like it. Again usually DNF if I dislike it this much, but occasionally I feel it still has potential and I try to stick with it to the end.
3*** I liked it. It wasn't great but it was enjoyable enough. It is unlikely I'll ever reread it but I might finish the series if it is a part of one.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this at some point, and I will almost always finish the series if part of one.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will probably reread this and possibly more than once. I will definitely finish the series if it's part of one.

I grew up reading Goosebumps so the fact that my daughter wants to now read "scary YA" books with me I LOVE it and this one did not disappoint!!

I was surprised how spooky and dark this was for a middle grade, I will likely read more from the author when I want a quick read!

MADE A LONG TIME AGO
This book was amazing it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The plot was easy to follow and interesting. 4/5 stars.

This is a story about Maria who lost her twin sister when she was hit by a car. She feels guilty about what happened and blames herself. But this all changes at one sleepover. When she has two friends over and on of them brings a Ouija board. They try to contact Isbella, but nothing happens. Her friend goes to the bathroom and Maria tries one more time the spirt contacts her. The spirt asked Maria to let it in. She agrees but the spirt is not who it seemed to be. Within the next few weeks all the spirt did was torment her. Her parents whent on a trip leaving her alone, but her parents leaving her with the spirt would be there worse choice. Her friend came over and the torture started. The spirit trapped them in some kind of fear world. Maria and her friend tried to escape the spirit the best they could it was to the point where they were looking for the front door. Vines wrapped around the floors with various monsters poking through them. When they found it Maria had to make a sacrifice she let her friend go out the door and presumably accepted her fate. She closed her eyes waiting for the pain and torture to start. But it never happened she woke up in the basement she saw a light Spirit around her it was her sister Isabella. Isabella talked saying it was an evil spirit saying that she was now blessing the house making sure the spirit could not get in as long as she was there. Maria and her friend were reunited the evil spirit had gone her parents were happier and it all was at peace.

“Slowly every so slowly someone peeled back the covers from my face”

This book is the greatest and scariest book I have every read! I didn’t know if I wanted to scream, cry, take a break from reading at night, or through the book across the room when I was done with the book.

This story is about a girl named Maria (which is the person you are in the perspective of.) The book starts off as Maria is at a sleepover at her house with her two best friends named Tara and Lauren. Before this sleepover Maria had seen a terrible sight of seeing her own sister die right in front of her. And even months after the horrible death sight Maria is still depressed and so is her father and mother. It affects Maria more because Maria thinks it’s her own fault her sister died. (Also it’s important to know you don’t find out how she died until the last few pages of the book.) During the sleepover Tara brings a spirit board and they used it at 12:00 a.m. As you can imagine Maria believes that she is talking to her sister, Isabella, through this spirit board. Or is she? Well that’s for you to read because I can’t say anymore without giving a spoiler! 5/5 ⭐️

This book might seem like your typical horror book. Though I promise you that it goes so much deeper, so much Darker. What I told you is just how the book starts off. If you know anymore about this book its going to give away the entire book. When I first started reading this book I was hooked to it immediately I was like: OOH this is gonna be good I just know it. (Obviously I was right because of my rating)

I highly recommend this book to anyone that’s looking for a VERY GOOD horror kids book. Bye!

It is a children’s book, hence the predictable plots. Maria lost her sister, Isabella, in a tragic accident and has been blaming herself ever since. Her family has been torn apart as a result of the tragedy. During a sleepover, Tara (Maria’s friend) brought a Ouija board to help Maria contact Isabella, and as we could have guessed, a poltergeist was invited instead of her.
The rest of the story depicts how the girls tried to escape the vengeful ghost, and in doing so, Maria must accept that what happened between Isabella and her was an accident and she must stop blaming herself for it.
Interesting book.

It isn't the author's best work but it is a solid story that is worthy of 4 stars when read by young adults. There are a number of life's lesson in here about forgiving yourself, of the importance of siblings and friends.

I'm fairly new to middle grade horror, not counting Goosebumps that I read when I was younger. Sometimes I just want straight forward horror that's not too convoluted with flowery language or too much imagery. MG horror really fits, spooky and straight forward and good.

This is the 3rd book I read from this author during the last week and I am amazed that his stories for young adults have more game than some of the adult horror novels I have read in the last couple of months.

Loved this one!

Maria has never quite gotten over her twin sister Isabella's death. Her mother is trying, but her father is distancing himself from the family. Luckily, Maria's friends are very understanding and supportive. When they are having a sleepover one night, Tara and Lauren bring a Ouija board type device and the three attempt to connect with Isabella's spirit. They summon something, and in her guilt, Maria invites the spirit in after it asks her to. Of course, this is a bad idea (and Tara later tells her this), and creepy things start to happen. At first, Maria thinks she is just imagining it, but as the stuffed animals' eyes start to glow, their heads start to turn, and they start attacking her, she knows that something is wrong. The ghost takes Tara and challenges Maria to get her back. It's a struggle, and the spirit is very powerful. Will Maria be able to overcome her guilt in order to make peace and subdue the evil spirit?
Strengths: There are enough twists and turns that I don't want to give away too much of the action, and we don't know for most of the book how Isabella died. The animated stuffed animals really up the creep factor for me, and the scenes battling the spirit were horrifying. Of course, I already have a fear of inviting vampires into my home, so this really preyed on those! The processing of Maria's grief is worked in briefly and rather effectively, which was a nice surprise. Tara is a fantastic friend. This is similar to Follow Me, creepier than Alexander's creepy doll books, and not quite as scary as Darkroom, which has replaced The Devil's Footsteps as my favorite scary novel.
Weaknesses: I will never have fond feeling for dysfunctional grieving parents in middle grade books.
What I really think: Let's start a display of creepy floating ghosts on the cover! Duga's The Replacement, Krovatin's Darkness, and Sutherland's Ghosts Never Die are great books to start with!

This book is really good! It’s about this girl named Maria and she can’t get over the fact her sister, Isabella died. Maria then has a sleepover with her friends Tara and Lauren. During the sleepover they do an oracle boarding (ouija board) and find what they think is Isabella. Maria gets really interested in the board but her friends are skeptical and thinks someone may be moving it. But when Lauren falls asleep and Tara goes to the bathroom Maria uses the board again and it starts saying things like “your fault” and “you did it” and once Tara comes down Maria quickly puts it away. Days past and really weird things start happening and Maria quickly realizes she invited not her sister but a evil spirit into her house. I don’t want to say too terribly much… so read the rest to find out what happens! (Sorry i know people hate that) 🥲

I loved this book! I recommend 10/10! So the book starts at a sleepover with three girl, Mariah and her two friends. They played board games and drank hot chocolate. Soon it was midnight, Her playful friend pulls out a spirit board, they asked a few questions and got gibberish, the responsible friend goes to bed cause she doesn't believe it, Mariah and her other friend keeps going and Mariah asked if her sister was there, it said yes and soon it started asking to invite it in. Fast forward to the end, they found out that she invited a evil old woman's spirit that was trying to act like Isabella, Mariah's dead twin sister.

This book is a preteen thriller that is any easy read. If you've never read any horror or thrillers before and adult books seem too daunting or thick or just want to ease into the genre, then, this book might be for you. It's been years since I've read any thrillers and I wanted to ease back into it. I chose four books and this book helped me remember why I enjoyed the genre. It might be for younger readers, but, I rather enjoyed the story. I might not read it again, but, while reading it, I enjoyed the story.

I listened to this audiobook with my niece. She is eleven. I was a little anxious about the content at first, especially since it deals with death, spirits, calling on spirits, and a “sprit” board. I am glad the author includes some good lessons about messing with those things at the end, otherwise I wouldn’t find this book very appropriate for young tweens or teenagers. The writing was good, though a bit repetitive at times. My niece and I had great conversations about the book while listening, especially with trying to make predictions about what was going to happen next.

Pretty good. I think it would have really spooked me if read at the intended age. I think the idea of a ghost haunting is spooky, but even more so when the ghost is your sister.

As with the other books I’ve read by this author, the endings are usually pretty uneventful. You have a creepy story that just kinda ends.

Anyway, I enjoyed this quick read. Definitely a good one for October.

I read this book to see if it was appropriate for my 4th grade students.. definitely has moments of suspense, but I truly believe it is a great mystery read for higher level readers. Hoping to read a few others books written by K. R. Alexander (Alex R. Kahler)

Book level 4.4 (fourth grade)—-it’s going on my library book shelf 😉

I liked the book but all the book you want to know how Isabella died and in the last few pages it says how she died it would be much better if it was at the beginning.

Also it didn’t end that nice either.

But other wise it is a great book!

This up there as one of my favourite middle grade books EVER. Not only is it the perfect mix of girl power and spooky but it packed a punch. The portrayal of grief felt so realistic that I cried a little at the end. Honestly such a fantastic little horror book.

3.5*

I love all of K.R. Alexander's horror stories and this is no exception. This is a creepy tale of grief and a vengeful ghost who takes advantage of a sibling's loss and guilt. Some parts are predictable, but it was a good read all the same.

DNFd at about 60%-ish? I had a lot going on while I was listening to this book and couldn't get into it. Also picked up the audiobook on Hoopla without realizing it was middle grade. Might give it another try soon though because it was pretty interesting.

I'm officially hooked on K.R. Alexander's short little horror books. Soooooo much story in so little time and they're decently spooky. I liked The Collector more than this one, but this one was still good. :)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️-I liked this book a lot. It had a good creepy element and was on the more scary side of middle grade scary books which I enjoyed! I really liked the representation of grief in this book and how it showed how Maria worked through her sadness alongside her parents and friends. Good book! 📖

Highly recommenced! This one was scary to me at the suspenseful parts and it was also a little sad. I would say this would make a good movie just because. Great job!
