for those of you looking to fill a Harry Potter-shaped hole in your life, THIS IS IT. I've never read something to quite match that series yet. it has lovable, root-able characters, fascinating beasts, a thrilling adventure, and a new world to lose yourself in. The Accidental Apprentice is like a mashup of HP, How to Train Your Dragon, Fairy Tail, and Pokemon. it's like all the fantasy I've loved all my life. I would take DOZENS of books about these Lore Keepers!

CUTE! Wilderlore is just what you would expect from a middle-grade: quirky characters, imaginative world, and a light-hearted plot that keeps moving.
I think anyone within the target audience range will be sure to enjoy this How to Train Your Dragon meets Pokemon-esque novel featuring mythical creatures, not just dragons, and a magic community.

3.5 ish stars rounded up.
I thought this was a pretty fun fantasy adventure. Younger me would have liked it very much. If you like Pokemon and the idea of monster collecting you’ll be right at home. (At least what I know of the Pokemon plot.) There’s many similarities to the Naruto story line as well, especially in regard to the exam and the hero’s backstory, although the mc’s personality is a polar opposite to Naruto’s.

5/5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Accidental Apprentice was such an amazing book full of whimsical charm. The theme was of the novel really profound, and you could see it all throughout the book. The world building was so, so amazing! I felt like I was there with all of the characters. Sycomore is described perfectly, and the woods are so full of imagery. It's got amazing elements targeted at animal lovers and fantasy lovers, plus it's got a reluctant hero, a confident heroin and wonderful friendships. Amand

As long as he can remember, Barclay Thorne has never fit in. The town of Dullshire has lots of rules that he tends to break, and with his parents killed by a beast attack when he was young there's no one to defend him. Hard work has kept him alive, granted him everything he has including an apprenticeship to the local mushroom farmer. This is destined to be his future until a chance encounter in the woods changes his life forever. The woods are dangerous and forbidden to enter but when his fello

Barclay, as an orphan, has to work hard but is content with his position as a mushroom farmer's apprentice and his life in Dullshire. Things change when he's searching for a mushroom and ends up deep within the woods. Barclay has a run in with a beast. Rather than being killed, the beast bonds with him making him a lore keeper. Barclay returns to Dullshire hoping to keep his secr

The Accidental Apprentice is an amazing read (I read it twice just for fun and can’t wait for the next edition). Kids who like fantasy worlds will thoroughly be delighted with the worlds Ms. Foody created.

Beautiful all around. The cover, the ongoing story, the relationships...I'm just so in love with this book and I genuinely cannot wait for more installments. Fleeing home, Barclay discovers a sudden, unwanted ability to control magic, or Lore - an ability forbidden by the rules of Dullsville. I loved the twists and turns in this quick middle-grade read. It's not the most inventive story, but I was having too much fun to really care. The world-building is excellent and I'm definitely anticipating future books spent in both the magical and non-magical lands mentioned here. Foody did a great job making the world feel immersive and exciting and really desirable. This book was such a charming read. Amanda Foody really takes the reader on a journey full of whimsy and delight. The world she has created is so atmospheric. I felt like I was really in Sycomore exploring the world of enchanting beasts. I loved all the characters in this book, especially Barclay. Thanks to Netgalley for the arc. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this one as middle grade books can be tough to read and enjoy as an adult sometimes, but this one was a pleasant surprise. There’s likable characters, a fresh story, and some good old good versus evil in here with twists to keep you interested. It’s a clean fantasy perfect for middle grade fantasy fans. I found Barclay a bit irritating at times with his sticking to his life issues, but I see potential for decent future books,

3 1/2 stars. This opener in a new middle grade fantasy series takes common elements from its predecessors and makes them it's own. Barclay, after losing his parents to a magical beast, just wants a very boring life. But when he has to chase after another boy into the woods, he finds himself inexplicably bonded to a beast and thus evicted from his life as a mushroom farmer's apprentice in Dullshire. What follows is a series of magical contests, bullies, eccentric teachers, and of course, a big bo

What a rich magical world full of exotic beasts and fun characters! I absolutely loved this book. It was great to see a male main character again that learns to appreciate who he is. Barclay's development was so believable and organically refreshing.

I received an ARC of this one and I'm so glad I did! This is a delightful story set in an enchanting world. Barclay Thorne has lived in Dullshire his whole life, and despite being an orphan with no one to look after him, he likes his place. But one day, on a mushroom hunting expedition with another apprentice, he accidentally bonds with a Beast. Thus begins his major adventure of trying to find out how to remove his Beast. Along the way he meets other children who are trying to apprentice to Lor

Wow. What an adventure, it was exciting, humorous, and full of wonder. The introduction of Lore (magic) and all the cool things it does was fun to read about. The growth of Barclay from beginning to end was a treat to read as he begins to find and acknowledge his true wild self. There were a few twists and surprises as well which makes me excited for the next book to learn more about Lore Keepers, Beasts, the Guild, and all the characters.

Mix Pokemon, Harry Potter, and one of those books where someone bonds with a magical beast and it spends time as a moving tattoo on that person's body, and you get The Accidental Apprentice!
Not exactly an original plot, but young readers will probably enjoy the wild ride the MC takes from simple mushroom farmer apprentice to the partner of one of the strongest magic beasts around!
And check out that cover! Who couldn't love that!
