If you have never been to Japan, curious about its culture and food, then this is a good book that showcased the different types of food you will encounter, famous for or should try when traveling in Japan.

If you are like me, who's been to Japan a few times, enjoy eating Japanese food very often, it's a nice generalized skim-through read as you'll probably know most of the content already.

Keep in mind this book speaks to foods of Japan overall but will not provide any recommendations on restaurants.

This is another one that I had on my to-read list for some time.
It's a little disappointing and in some instances, dumbing down the experiences.
With my food allergies, I know my choices won't be the same as everyone but reading this, I don't think I'm missing out.

Not a travel guide really, but rather an in-depth introduction to Japanese cuisine. That is to say, the articles on different subjects are quite short, but there are plenty of them and they range from what you already know (about ramen and sushi) to what most foreigners won't (like the regional specialitets from all over the country, not just the tourist hot spots). Lovely illustrations accompany the text for extra flavour.

(But why can't they put the name of the author on the cover and not just in the small print at the back of the book? I think it would be space enough on the cover for both that and to say it's from Lonely Planet.)

This definitely inclines towards the "look at pictures, read a bit" end of the book market (I'm more naturally drawn to "read a book, view occasional illustration" books), but they did a nice job of it. You certainly learned something about food in Japan, and it was always evocative (so hard to read this while Japan is currently closed to tourists ... in the pre-Meiji Era they pulled that stunt for about 400 years, so one worries one might never get to go!)

(5* = amazing, terrific book, one of my all-time favourites, 4* = very good book, 3* = good book, but nothing to particularly rave about, 2* = disappointing book, and 1* = awful, just awful. As a statistician I know most books are 3s, but I am biased in my selection and end up mostly with 4s, thank goodness.)

I had read Lonely Planet's Eat Vietnam guide last year and really appreciated the thoughtful introduction to the country's cuisine, covering the historical context of Vietnam and how this influenced its cuisine (e.g. the Chinese and French influence); flavours in Vietnamese cuisine; staples, ingredients and specialities in Vietnamese cuisine; drinks; and regional specialities. Eat Japan adopts a similar approach but perhaps because Japanese cuisine, including its regional variations, is more readily available where I live, this was a less revelatory read for me. Still, a useful primer for anyone looking to learn about Japanese cuisine.

3.5 estrellas.

I didn’t read this as a book per se but as a guide accompanying me on my trip to Japan, and for this purpose it was very good. Full of very useful information and suggestions which, complemented by my utterly invaluable smartphone, contributed to my having a wonderful time, both culinarily and otherwise. Definitely worth its spot in the suitcase.

Love this series so much! Great overview of the country, it's history, the types of food, where you can find them, and regional specialties. Read these before you go to any of the countries in the series!

Pretty much a compilation of food and eating from their Japan publications but more in depth. Liked the lists of various dishes.
