An Officer and a Scotsman

Captain Andrew St. James always knew he came from a noble family, but his branch grew far from the wealth and status. Nothing shocks him more than learning that he now stands as heir presumptive to his distant cousin the Duke of Carlyle. There is much for Drew to learn and adjust to—but first he goes home to Edinburgh, to tell his mother and three

Oh the first half of this book was such utter delightful perfection! I ADORED Drew (which I found surprising, because when we first met him in book 1, I thought it was really weird how he just bowed to the Duchess' wishes and meekly stood by when she told him what she expected of him), he is one of the nicest, sweetest heroes I've read about in a long time, and seeing his mischievous streak come out was just adorable. I loved his interactions with his family and really loved seeing them bond and ...more

Captain Andrew St. James is shocked to discover he is the heir presumptive to his distant cousin, the Duke of Carlyle. He heads home to Scotland to tell his family of his inheritance. After an unhappy marriage, Ilsa Ramsay yearns for freedom and fun. When she kisses a handsome stranger at a tavern, neither expects a magnetic chemistry to overtake them.

This is the second book in the Desperately Seeking Duke series. The book opens with a brief synopsis of the title succession, but then advances as

A Scot to the Heart is the second book in Linden's Desperately Seeking Duke trilogy- in which the Duchess of Carlyle is looking for the heir of Carlyle dukedom since the current duke has no nearest living heir. We already met the first potential candidate, Maximilian St. James, in About a Rogue; this is about Scottish Captain Andrew St. James, the great-grandson of the third duke, which at the moment the most possible candidate for the dukedom.

As with Maximilian, the Duchess also gives task to

Morgan- Nothing Better Than a Book
I absolutely loved the first book in this series, and hoped to love this one just as much! Captain Andrew St. James is a distant cousin to the duke who is not able to have children. He learns that he is the next closest heir to the dukedom. He leaves the army, and goes back to Edinburgh to share the news with his family. Here he meets his sister’s best friend, Ilsa. It turns out that Ilsa was the mysterious woman who had kissed him at the tavern the night before and then disappeared.

I am not 100% decided on this book. Did I love it? Did I like it?

I feel like the premise was good. There was a lot of unanswered questions around main characters and supporting characters. No real ending for our two main characters, Isla and Drew are sort of left in limbo. Some of the things in the book were way OTT and others were believable yet not fully fleshed out.

All together the story left me feeling lost and not quite sure if I even care about the next story. However, the romance that w

I received this book from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I have read and loved the first installment in the series (About a Rogue) and this one was even better than I expected. I had this image of Andrew as a very low key, subservient individual but he is everything but. He is fun, he is straightforward, he doesn't beat around the bush about his feelings and what I love most is that he is absolutely dedicated to his family and loves his sisters and his mother e ...more

There are two types of characters that I will NEVER get sick of. Brawny and lust Scots and the widow. I feel like I've been on a widow kick lately (see last review) but I am not hating it. And I especially wasn't hating it when I met our hero, Captain Andrew St. James.

Now, I will fully admit I at one point attempted to read the first book when it came out because of all the reviews and word of mouth, but ended up setting it aside and not coming back to it. But I also know myself enough to know

Captain Andrew St. James has been in the English Army since he was eighteen. He is the head of his family and sends most of his pay home for his mom and three sisters. One day he is summoned to his colonel's office and told he needs to go to Carlyle Castle. When he gets there he finds out he is the heir presumptive. He goes to Edinburgh to tell his sisters and mother the good news and to see if he can talk them into moving to England. He meets Ilsa Ramsay at an Oyster Bar. They danced and even a ...more

Thank you Avon, Harper Voyager and NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Captain Andrew (“Drew”) St. James has found out that he is the presumptive heir to the Duke of Carlyle and stands to inherit a vast fortune. He returns to share the news with his family in Edinburgh, where he meets the lovely and free-spirited widow, Ilsa Ramsay. Drew and Ilsa cross paths many times, intentionally and unintentionally. But just as they are coming to terms with what they mean to each other, a scanda

Reading this book was a delight and completely exceed my expectations!
I enjoyed so much this book that is the second book in the series Desperately Seeking Duke, that you can read totally read as a standalone.
Everything, since the prose, the characters, the setting and the pace was perfect. The story was super entertaining, fun and engaging, I didn't want to stop reading.

I adored Ilsa and Andrew and their chemistry was noticeable from the moment they meet.

I find this story has intriguing things about it. Such as the story is based around a Scottish family who has been suddenly placed in the English aristocrat world. The male character, Drew is surrounded by a number of women who are a major influence in his life. And there is Ilsa, the love interest for Drew. Her character is a strong, intelligent and determined woman who wants nothing, but to control her own destiny. I think that the book offers a good plot, which leaves me excited to read how D ...more

Drew and Ilsa are an outstanding couple considering their own games and love.
Drew is set to inherit a title that he doesn't want.
Ilsa will do what has to be done if Drew inherits the title.
Caroline Linden has written a good storyline but it ends in a cliffhanger.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

What a treat: solid characters with a plausible love story making mature decisions about their future together. It's a slow start getting them together, and a broad cast of characters interferes at times, but overall, this is a love story that rewards readers.

This begins where About a Rogue does, with two young men from distant branches of the St. James family tree learning that they are the Duke of Carlyle's only living heirs. Max's journey played out in About a Rogue, and A Scot to the Heart

A Scot to the Heart is the second book in the Desperately Seeking Duke series, where the Duchess of Carlyle asks her solicitor to seek out the next heirs to the Dukedom. The current Duke, her son, is feeble and is unlikely to last much longer, and there are no direct heirs. She is determined to whip into shape one of the long-lost heirs to ensure the Dukedom survives. The first book was about Max St. James, the more distant heir. I read the first book in this series last year and loved its premises: the powerful Duke of Carlyle title now needed to be passed on to the long lost distant cousins, who were all caught by surprise, expected to improve themselves so they could take on the responsibilities that came the dukedom. This book is about the heir presumptive Captain Andrew St. James. He's not a reformed rake like his cousin from book 1, but straight up a nice and sweet guy, responsible for his mother and 3 younger sist ...more

I am a huge fan of Caroline Linden but have had a hard time getting into this series. The first book was a bit tough, but this follow-up was more of what I have come to expect when I pick up her books - entertaining and delightful.

First off, I loved that the characters weren't a part of the aristocracy. And she didn't fall on old tired Scottish love story tropes. This story felt so fresh to me. The characters were all comfortably middle class, merchants, and Scots.

I really liked the previous book in the series, so I was excited for what A Scot to the Heart would bring. However, I was just severely underwhelmed by this book.

Neither of the leads is particularly compelling to me personally, but there’s a lot I can see readers liking. Ilsa is perhaps the more interesting of the two, as she has stock in tobacco companies, and it’s cool to see a wom

A Scot to the Heart, the second book in Caroline Linden's Desperately Seeking Duke series, is just as good as the first! Andrew St. James is the presumptive heir to the Duke of Carlyle, but he's just an army captain, and not prepared for the role at all. The Duchess of Carlyle gives him six months to become a respectable gentleman, and he is determined to do just that. When he gets to Edinburgh to tell his family, however, he meets the vivacious widow, Ilsa Ramsay. Ilsa has lived her whole life ...more

3.5 Stars. I read the first in this series, “About a Rogue” last year and really enjoyed it (review can be found here). I still liked this one but I didn’t love it as much as the first. The book was well written and I enjoyed that it was a Scottish story and not the typical Scot trying to find his way through London society story. I really enjoyed this second offering in the Desperately Seeking Duke series.

Drew is an officer and a Scotsman whose family descends from nobility but has nothing to show for it as there was a falling-out in the past. A lovely way to spend a few hours!

I really enjoyed reading this book. Like the first book in the series, the setting is somewhat unique for a historical romance. It takes place a generation before the Regency period, when so many other novels tend to be set, and the heroine comes from a respectable family in trade (though we learn much less about cabinetmaking in this one than we do about pottery manufacturing in the first). I like reading about people who live in somewhat-ordinary circumstances

2.5 stars. A drama-filled Scottish historical romance with a frustrating subplot.

Captain Andrew St. James learns that he is, surprisingly, the presumptive heir to a distance cousin, the Duke of Carlyle. He has a whole life to change, but he first wants to spend time in Edinburgh preparing his mother and sisters for the change. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an advance readers copy of this story.

A Scot to the Heart is book 2 in Ms Linden's Desperately Seeking Duke series. The basis of the series plot is a dukedom with a terminally ill duke who has no direct heir. His mother, the dowager duchess, starts a search for the next closest male relative and a couple of spares too. In this book we have Drew, a military man who's actually a cousin of the dying duke. I have been anticipating this book since the first in the series!
There are two potential heirs in line to a dukedom. The first in line is Captain Andrew St. James, this is his story. The second in line was Maximilian St. James, who we saw in find his match in About a Rogue. At the end of his story, we were left wondering where the Captain ended up.
