This is definitely my favourite read of 2020 so far. The plot had me hooked from the get go and I loved all of the twists and turns it took me on. I felt real empathy for the characters and managed to get extremely invested in their stories. The character development of Matty and seeing his journey unfold was probably the highlight of the book for me as I loved seeing how his interactions with several different characters shaped him into becoming the person he is at the end. I loved how Sandy ha

Folked Up is a YA fiction following Sandy and Matty. They are dating and in a band that travels around singing folk songs. One night, they find an old book filled with folklore, including a song called Matty Groves. They sing the song in their set, despite being warned that it comes with a curse. When they perform it, they are pulled into a fantasy world straight from the folk songs they sing every night. They are separate ...more

Folked Up is a tale of teens, magic, sword fighting and friends. Most writers will give you their characters all dressed their best for the family photo, even with the last minute bit of spit to flatten down that errant curl. Charlotte dodges around the tropes of the hidden genius, the chosen one, the ones that are special but didn't know it, and weaves a tale of believable teens and their reactions to a complete host of unexpected and fantastical events that leaves you wondering what will happe

Folked Up is an amazing and charming fantasy novel.
I loved the characters, especially Matty and his new friends, and seeing their relationships develop. The shift in voice between the two narrators is very well done, showing the character's different tones. I also enjoyed the striking difference between the modern vernacular and old world speak.
The ending was very satisfying, but I still hope for a sequel!

I absolutely loved this book. In this very amusing time-slip story, a pair of folk musicians get thrown back into Tudor times where, in an attempt to reunite and get back to 21st c England, they encounter heroes and villains from their folk song repertoire. It's got swords! It's got sorcery! It's got folk songs that shouldn't be sung!
Fast paced without being rushed, there are some playful nods to fairly well known songs too! I loved it

Absolutely magical book by a brilliant author. I really connect to all of the characters and it's a wonderful blend of fantasy, folklore and humour.
I've never read anything quite like it and it honestly recommend it to anyone. ...more
