3 Hearts - Blog holiday reads with Ann!
Super simple. Super sweet. Super short.

Assumptions can definitely get one in a tight spot, and this was no different for Finn when hot guy Conner, mistakes him for the macho type when really, he’s soooo not that.

Ensue a little pursuing and flirting, and Finn and Conner hit if off quick! Equally quick is when the omission of truth can quickly spiral out of control. Good thing Finn and Conner have more in common than they know which can mend quite a lot.

Look no further for a feel good holiday story!

When Connor meets Finn, a guy who "belonged on a magazine cover, or in a movie, or maybe in a pantheon of Greek gods" at the community center, Connor can't let him know that he's taking a crochet class and he doesn't correct Finn's assumption that he's taking a boxing class. This very short story plays with perceptions and misconceptions about masculinity, attractiveness, skills, etc. and quickly ends with a HFN.

This story is very brief, without much character development and feels more like an excerpt than a complete work. But it is sweet and engaging and worth a read! 3.5 stars.

As Connor learns in this story, assumptions about what other people might think if they knew the truth about him can be easy to make, but they have consequences. Connor likes crafts and is determined to learn how to crochet, but when he runs into Finn, a hunk of a man and more handsome than should be legal, Connor fears admitting his preference will lead to disdain. Crochet isn’t the most “manly” hobby, right? Avoiding the truth seems easy at first since Finn assumes Connor is at the center for the boxing class – but as time passes and Finn begins to show his interest, the initial “lie by omission” grows into a potential obstacle between two men who are clearly attracted to each other.

A Stitch in Time is a really cute little nugget of a story. It’s a really short one, so just as I was getting settled in, it was over. Which was OK, but I liked the setup and the characters a lot and would have loved to have a little more page time with them once the misunderstanding was resolved.

I did like how the author gave both MC’s the same social foible. They both made assumptions unfairly and thus, misunderstanding, but thankfully it was short lived and both guys had a master crafty woman in their corners to make sure they weren’t stupid for too long.

Again, just a little more page time would have made this story a smidge more memorable and special.

Very cute holiday romance with enough angst not to make it too cloyingly sweet. I really liked that both MC’s had such atypical hobby’s and the way they struggled to with (perceived) prejudices, even their own. The misunderstanding about why they’re both at the community center is resolved with some drama, but I really enjoyed how the author wrote that in. The writing flowed easily and was well-paced, never dragging nor rushing to cramp the necessary events into this novella-length story.

3.5 stars- a charming couple with a solid start to a relationship

A Stitch in Time is basically an extended meet cute that takes place over the holidays. It was a cute story with nice characters, good writing, and a balanced rhythm. I liked how that this story confronted perceptions and misconceptions about people’s interests and while a little off-putting, Connor’s insistence on appearing manly was understandable and fairly accurate. Where A Stitch in Time lost me a little was in its development, or lack thereof. The author established a substantial draw between Connor and Finn in a short amount of time, and I was definitely intrigued, but the story ends before it really gets started and the characters are barely together before the book wraps.

Connor had let his best friend talk him into learning to crotchet, but he hadn’t found it easy to pick up. Joining a class at the local community centre, Connor ends up trying the group project, and meets Finn when their paths crossed in the building. Can the two men find some common ground?

I enjoyed this interesting and fast paced short story. Most of the build up between Connor and Finn was the two men exchanging quick pleasantries (and eyeballing each other) while passing like ships in the night. The instant chemistry and connection though had both men eager to explore more and thus finally leads them onto a date. I was a little disappointed at just how pear-shaped that date went – though to be honest it came across to me as extremely realistic, Finn’s massive over-reaction and Connor’s stumbling incoherence really could be something virtually everyone has personally experienced before. So I felt really mixed about how most of the middle of the story turned out. While I enjoyed the fact it was realistic, I also found it a little sad and deflating to read in a fictional and romantic short story.

Thankfully, both Finn and Connor managed to work through the confusion and over-reaction (with a healthy dose of reality from a wonderfully kind-hearted old lady!) and I really enjoyed how the story ended on a high note between the two men. I also liked how while definitely Christmassy, that aspect of the story wasn’t over-done or pushed too hard. It had the warmth and feeling of a good Christmas story, but without a lot of the usual craziness that comes with those styles of stories.

Fun and realistic, this was a good story. It is incredibly sweet – not even a chaste kiss between the two men – but it’s clear they plan to begin a fresh and exciting new romantic relationship together so I’d classify this as a happily ending story.

Connor is trying to learn to crochet. His friend signs him up for a course when he’s having some troubles. He’s a bit ambivalent about it, but on his first night, he rungs into Finn – a cute guy who is leaving the center. When Finn assumes he’s there for boxing, he doesn’t disabuse him of that notion. He finds his class and surprisingly to him, he’s not the only guy in the class and he actually kinda likes it 😉 The instructor is a very kind lady who helps him get on track.

As Connor keeps attending the class, he runs into Finn again. Finn’s friends from HIS class notice that he’s got an interest in Connor – and so eventually Finn invites Connor out for a drink. However, things don’t go great and Finn ends up leaving after Connor expresses some disdain for perceived “non-masculine” pursuits. This is a pose on Connor’s part and both he and Finn have made some completely incorrect assumptions. After that disastrous non-date, Finn avoids Connor. But in the spirit of holidays, they are persuaded to maybe issue second chances.

This is a cute story that really points out the danger of assumptions. Between stereotypes based on presentation and assumptions based on gender roles, both Finn and Connor try to project something that maybe they aren’t and they both make missteps. Luckily the lovely instructor of Connor’s class, Angela, is kind of a Christmas angel for these two 🙂 She does a bit of magic herself and saves the day. Merry Christmas to all!

This story would have worked much better if Connor and Finn would have talked, without macho posturing, and slowly got to know each other. Maybe the misunderstanding would have worked on a longer story where some embarrassing situations would have resulted from the little lie but... alas... the irrational blow up and making up were too artificial for my tastes.

The actual time that these two spent together was about a page and a half. I get that it's a short story, but there was more development between the MCs and their friends than there was between each other. I sure liked the crochet parts, though.

The idea of what you think is expected by those around you can cause fear and hurt feelings. Being your true self is scary but leads to better things. This sort of sums up the relationship that begins between Fin and Conner. Luckily for them they get a bit of help.
