Symbols of Egypt

Unique and magical, this visual reference presents in-depth definitions of more than 300 symbols from Egyptian high culture—gods and goddesses, plants, animals, historical personalities, sacred signs, gestures, and actions. The symbols of this vanished culture divulge volumes about the ancient Egyptians’ view of themselves and their world, as well as their artifacts.

This is another seemingly simple book that contains a great deal of good information. It is broken down into sections such as gods, plants, and animals, and gives the importance of each as well as hieroglyphic symbols of each. It contained (for me) an amazing amount of new information as well as a chance to cement some prior knowledge. Each entry is succinct and the accompanying graphics are most helpful (and in some cases entertaining.)

V každom prípade, ak sa niekto chce dozvedieť niečo viac o bohoch, faraónoch, symboloch... odporúčam Vojtecha Zamarovského: Bohovia a králi starého Egypta.

This book is riddled with spelling errors and discrepancies that make it difficult to accept the validity of the information provided by the author. The overall organization of the book is odd, especially historical persons who are not listed alphabetically or in order of their rule. Some material was also redundant. The section about Nefertiti mainly referenced,Akenhaton, her husband's unconventional rule. Many of the symbol and artifact drawings were poor and some items were nearly unrecognizable without the caption. There were many interesting tidbits about myths and history included throughout the text, but it is hard to gauge the validity of information because no cross referencing was provided. Some of the information provided about the age of the pyramids is highly debatable based on findings by Egyptologists. This book is a concise introduction to symbols of Egypt, but in many aspects seems too vague and lacks authority without providing where information was obtained from.

This is a wonderful book that gives you a basic understanding of many of the common Egyptian symbols. Some of the items they cover include deities, sacred signs, gestures, plants and animals. Illustrations are elaborate and descriptions are easy to understand. Great book for reference when reading more in depth books on Egyptology or for research.
