This book was a slog. While it does, eventually, advance the main plot, it is just an excuse to spend time with the "F" team. Lex is great when he is nonexistent in a book, but this is Lex central. The whole book is just "I shouldn't be the leader." Even better is that no one SHOULD be following him. It's like making the royal ass wiper king because the old king is out of town.

There was a great story coming on Gryph/Finn's real world interactions, but instead we got this drivel as the mainline book. AFTER this book, he started writing interludes in this world, which is what this book is.

The better way to read this book is to just go "Gryph get's back from the real world and no one you know died", and save yourself the mental anguish of getting through this book.

If you really want to know what Smellify is, please read on, but it won't be worth it.

450 pages of Lex. Sorry but this book barely moved the story forward and the MC was nowhere to be found. I love this series but please don’t do anymore Lex only books. The first one was bad enough.

Good follow up on an enjoyable series

Great continuation of the driving quest of the series with a GIANT twist in that the main hero (Gryph) has been kidnapped so his band of heroes are a side quest to rescue him. The fact that the Gryph is not present and the group is being led by Lex is slightly off putting but the story his action packed as usual. I’ve quickly read the first six books of this series and looking forward to the next but am having trouble finding any news on its publication.

Great book for supporting cast

Love the series and the author does a great job of progressing the story line while balancing the character progression. That being said, Gryph is my favorite and without him I can’t give 5 stars. Eagerly awaiting the next book so we can unravel the mystery that has been artfully left to tantalize the readers.

Good read.

It's a good story, and what I was afraid would happen after the cliffhanger ending of book 5. We got a Lex story, that leaves us hanging on what exactly happens to Gryph. It continues the story well but I still want to know Gryph's story.

A little different

This was a bit of a slog for me. Although it advanced the main story it does so without its main character. Made it feel like another side quest. Looking forward to the next

Alert

I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.

So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Cheers

wow.

Ok I have to be brutally honest here. Compared to the other books preceding…this book sucked. I almost put it down and moved on to another series. It was difficult to complete and finish reading this, to put in mildly… Most people reading these books are looking for Gryff…not the really annoying Lex. This entire book seemed like a bullshit tribute to the few Lex fans out there. It also seemed like it was pushed, the entire storyline smelled of a contractual obligation to pump a book out. I do not recommend.

Chaos was a battle that didn’t really become relevant until later in the books, and by choosing to do that I didn’t take it as seriously. I do wish there was some notice or observation of chaos in Barrow King so that I could feel like I could observe the creatures from the very beginning. Nonetheless, the way they consume anyone’s mentality is interesting and something that could use some further delving into.

great story, mistakes though

This book and story are great, I really enjoyed it. The book was a little different since the main protagonist was not present most of the book but still good. It had plenty of grammatical and punctual errors though like it was rushed potentially. Still has a great time reading it!

Mr. Carney is certainly growing as an author. The story itself is great. Like how we started focusing more directly on some different characters. My only issue is that those characters all have the same thoughts as Griff. WWGD is essentially their mantra. Also in Books 5 specifically started getting a little out of hand with the prompts again.

Fun read, albeit chaotic...

Bit of a joke there, but it was a fun read. I like following Lex as a main character, so it was good to see his perspective throughout the novel.

I hope the next one follows Gryph again, but I had fun with Lex in this one.

Great addition

It’s an interesting addition to the book series, honestly my least favorite, but still continues the story. I’m excited about how it ended and what is to come in the next adventure.

A well written addition

This book builds upon all the lore and world building that the prior books started, adding in all the usual fun, humor, magic, and great characters, leading to an excellent read. Cant wait to see where it goes next!

Slow to start, but worth the read.

This book was slow going for me in the beginning. But, it picked up the flow and ended amazingly. I am looking forward to the next installment.

Best Thus far

Enough twists to give you whiplash ... With more ups and downs than a rollercoaster ...

Lex becomes so much more and his mostly crew ... So much better ...

Thank you for this one ... Next !!! 😁😁😁

Meandering

Way off track, no longer interested in the rest of the series. Lex is the worst “leader” ever, not worth trying to sort through. Miraculous saves against all odds with no good reason for it over and over.

I really do love these books. They have a great sense of humor (a requirement for my favorite books these days), an interesting story, good world building, and unique voices for each character. They're fun, smart, and interesting.

I thought this was a bit of a dud. I enjoyed the previous Lex book, but he was boring in this one and his one-liners were crap. And why do we have to constantly be told how bad everything smells? Surely chaos would sometimes smell nice, by random chance.

focus returns to Lex

The story shifts back to Lex with the rest of the party, all striving to find their lost leader. Things go awry - of course.

Small annoyance that the ebook had a couple clipped sentences.

A great book

Taking the main character out from the entire book seemed foolish and weird and then it worked to perfection. This book was amazing and vastly increased my appreciation for the other characters. Let’s go!!

A good book

Was a bit tough for me to get through and i also absolutely hated the ending with the cabal with 0 story behind it. Book is told through lex for the entire story.

Slow start, good finish

The beginning of this book was a bit slow to get some momentum going, narratively speaking, but once the plot picked up I was hooked. Good read!

Great series

Enjoying the books! A couple of chapters (6 & 29) have been truncated slightly but not by much. Looking forward to the next book.

Epic

Cool characters and story, some bad language and violence. Chaos creatures try to invade and the heroes blow up the portal.

The two novels with Lex as the main character are definitely my LEAST favorite of the six... 'Chaos Rising is just somewhat better than that other one...
