She fears the target she’s put on them.

And she’s terrified of loving them back.

What an epic finale!

I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to get to read this book 6 months before its release.

This is it.
The grand finale.
Fortuna and her family are running out of time to find a way to defeat not only Lucifer but too. The two of them seem to be working together, and the more Fortuna and her friends learn about Lucifer’s plan, the more dire the situation becomes. They have to fight a battle that seems doomed from the start, but Fortuna is not one to back down from a fight, and she is willing to go down fighting to give a chance to the world and her friends to survive.

I’ve been following Fortuna’s story since the release of the second book in 2020, so reading the final “The End” at the end of this final installment was special, and maybe a little bittersweet, too. I reread this series numerous times and fell in love with Fortuna, Laurie, Collith, and Fortuna’s found family. I am glad that the series is over so that I don’t have to wait anymore for the next book, but I'm also a little sad that it is all over. I will miss them. I also feel that with all the little links made between events in this book and events that happened in the first books, the circle has been completed. I am not saying they are back where they started, far from it, actually, but while I love this series and these characters fiercely, their adventure has come to an end, and it feels right this way.

If the first part of the book focuses more on gathering facts and allies, the second one focuses on the battle to come. There is action throughout the book, but especially in the last third, as Fortuna and the allies she managed to convince to fight with her face Lucifer’s army of demons and Fallens. Seeing Fortuna work so hard to get the other Fallen factions to come together and fight a battle that seems impossible to win reminded me of the final Avengers movie. It felt like a little “Avengers, assemble” moment, and I absolutely loved it!

Fortuna is so strong, but also still very much haunted by her past decisions and their consequences. She is not over and blames herself for everything Lucifer and Ollie did and will do. She is on the verge of breaking down, but she knows she cannot allow herself to shatter because too much rests on her shoulders. The difference is that she allows herself to be vulnerable in front of her friends this time, and she does not hesitate to ask for help when she needs it.

I will not reveal what exactly happens romance-wise, and who Fortuna picks if she ends up picking someone, but everyone was more open and more in tune with their feelings in this final book. Fortuna allowed people to see her cracks and to help her. Collith was more open about his feelings and intentions, and even Laurie had many honest and meaningful conversations with Fortuna, without all the sass and usual pretense that he didn’t care that much. Their emotions felt more raw and deeper in this book, and it truly allowed us to see how well they could work together, balance, and complete each other. They went from being slightly toxic and dysfunctional to being a tight and solid unit, and I loved every second of it.

The dynamic between Laurie, Fortuna, and Collith remains one of my all-time favorites. I was not the biggest fan of Collith at first, but he grew on me, and he really stepped up in the last few books of the series. I do enjoy reverse harems, but it’s always about all the guys revolving around the girl. I loved that in this case, Collith and Laurie shared a past before meeting Fortuna, and there were unresolved feelings between them. It created something that seemed messier and more complicated at first, but that ended up being amazing as we saw them grow into a fierce trio that would not hesitate to maim and kill to protect each other. Their bond is what a true polyamory romance should look like, in my opinion, and now that Laurie and Collith have learned how to be together without antagonizing each other, I can’t get enough of them. I also like that the author made sure that there was a special bond between Collith and Fortuna, as well as between Fortuna and Laurie and Laurie and Collith. I’ve been hoping for a throuple for a while, but until the very end of the book, I couldn’t say what would happen because while Fortuna had feelings for both men, she also was not willing or ready to make a choice or commit to a polyamorous relationship.

The Shadow Court and the found family vibe continue to shine in this book. From the beginning of this series, Fortuna has been “collecting strays” as Laurie likes to say, and we say in this book how important each of them has become to Fortuna, but also to her Court. If they were there because of Fortuna at first, they are now staying for each other. They develop bonds between them, and I loved seeing them interacting with each other, and seeing how they all became a family and would be able to remain one even if Fortuna was not there. She brought them together, but they built this new family together, and I just love the found family trope for this heartwarming feeling it gives when you see all these lonely souls finally finding a place to belong.

We got to see more of Nym’s powers in this final book, and how he played a bigger role in all this than we previously thought. I do not want to say too much about it, because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I am picky when it comes to time-travel plots because it is so easy to have inconsistencies, but the author managed to wrap everything up and explain Nym’s part in a way that made sense and didn’t leave questions or plot holes.

Lucifer has been an intriguing villain since he first appeared in this series. His motives and intentions were more straightforward in this final book, but he continued to show that he was more than just a power-hungry tyrant. Sure, his main goal was to take over Earth because he wanted to rule it and get revenge on Daddy dearest, but we could still see glimpses of his layers whenever he would interact with Fortuna, and I enjoyed this little “extra complexity” it gave him. I like it when the villains are layered and not simply evil “just because”.

I understand the conflicted emotions Fortuna has toward Ollie, but I didn’t enjoy them. It is what makes their relationship feel so authentic. Love is not a switch you can just turn off. Still, even if I understand why, a part of me was annoyed that despite everything that happened at the end of the fifth book and the beginning of this one, Fortuna was still trying to find a way to save Ollie, even when he is causing death and mayhem all around him. She struggled to forgive Collith for his betrayal in the third book, and it took her a while to be able to trust him and get close to him again, yet she is willing to cozy up with Ollie. I know, I know, he is her best friend and she has known him for years, but it is not a secret that I was never Ollie’s biggest fan, so I was just happy for Fortuna to finally have an excuse to ditch him, I guess. 😅

As I said at the beginning of my review, finally finishing this series feels good and satisfying, but it also makes me a little sad. The author did a wonderful job with the way things ended, though. It is a sweet and good ending for most of the characters, without being too cheesy and having an over-the-top HEA for everyone. Not everyone made it through this book or the last one, and those who survived have to live with their grief and balance it with their newly found lightness and happiness, and the author found a good way to show this balance, I think.

I also have to mention that I was steadily crying for the last 5% of the book, but it is not necessarily a bad thing. I love books that evoke such strong emotions about the characters that I cry, and it impacts my rating. I can hardly give less than 4 or 5 stars to a book that made me feel so intensely.

If you’ve made it all the way to Violent Awakening, you’ve walked beside Fortuna through six books. Writing this series has taken years of my life, and you choosing to spend your time and emotions on these characters means more than I can put into words. Thank you for laughing with them, raging with them, grieving with them, and refusing to let them go.

As you close this final chapter, I hope it feels like a goodbye that hurts in the right ways—a little bloody, a little hopeful, and very, very Fortuna.

If you’d like to follow me into something new, I also have a ghosty series beginning with Waysider, a story full of hauntings, mysteries, and my usual brand of emotional chaos. I’d love to see you there.

Thank you for reading, for reviewing, and for carrying these characters in your head and heart. You’re the reason this story got to have an ending.

Love, K.J.

Listen, Fortuna. I don’t know who’s telling you that you have to ~choose~ between them when thE THROUPLE OPTION IS RIGHT FUCKING THERE, MA’AM.

(But, the correct answer is Laurie. Laurie throuple, Laurie monogamy, LAURIE SUPREMACY.)

I really think this series deserves more recognition! It's messy, chaotic, high-stakes, romantic, tragic, steamy, heartbreaking and so much more. Compared to other Romantasy or Fantasy Romance books this actually has complicated characters that sometimes make dumb decisions but you still really feel for them. The world is imaginative while also pulling from a lot of existing paranormal and fantasy creature lore. The plot evolves in unexpected directions (especially in book 5) but somehow it all comes together by the end. These characters have been with me for the past 5 years and it's hard to let them go now... Laurie will forever be my favorite and I was giddy each time he was on page 🤭🥰 Great series, can only recommend!

That was honestly the best ending I could imagine for Fortuna. I have read 100s of books since I started this series back in 2020, but this series has always been one of my favorites. Sad that it is ending and I have to leave the world of Collith, Laurie, and Fortuna.

I started this series really enjoying the books, but this book and the last felt drawn out and modpodged together. The ending of the last book revealing Oliver as the killer of her parents quite frankly didn’t make any sense.

Why was her best friend the killer?? How as like a six year old did she develop a character that would come to life from her fantasy land and then kill her parents and then make it back into her head again. She can’t even do that as an adult nightmare with any level of control. And if he was the killer how did he become this lovable character in her head after the fact. Just the amount of things that don’t add up is truly baffling. And if she can bring things to life from her own head, then why can’t she dream up an army to defeat the demons? Why does she have to ask everyone and anyone to fight with her?

The “romance”, don’t even get me started. I love Laurie and I even liked Collith. The open door throuple scene was uh, not well done, I mean we all knew it was headed this way, but it was just disappointing.

The romance with Oliver, I don’t ever understand. He might have been your” created” best friend but he also killed your parents, and your best friend, but sure, why not have sex with him? What? Like really, wtf? I understand a little bit of empathy cause he can’t really control the beast (which is another wtf plot hole) but like full on sex with him? Yeah, I don’t know about that.

The ending of Fortuna taking a year to herself, okay I get it, but does she have to be so dramatic about. Just tell your boyfriends you need some time, don’t just disappear.

And then the end? Laurie’s making breakfast? Laurie and Collith have been together while Fortuna finds herself? Is that what that means? So I guess they’re a real thrupple now? Like I don’t know what is happening, and honestly I don’t think most of the reader do either.

The end of a saga is coming 🥹

The slump that this book put me in was unreal. I loved every moment.

When KJ Sutton asked me if I wanted an ARC of the last Fortuna Sworn, there was only one correct answer. I have loved this series since my mom told me about it and while I’m sad to see it end, this final book was so epic and beautiful. I laughed, I cried, I stressed, I fell in love over and over again. Literally all of the emotions running through me while reading this. Fortuna has grown exponentially since book 1, she was always a bad ass Nightmare but seeing her allow herself to laugh and love and be selfish was amazing. I don’t want to give too much away because we’re still months away from the book release but just know that Fortuna gets her well-earned HEA. And the big battle? EPIC. I already want to reread the entire series so I can meet everyone all over again and cannot recommend this series enough.

If you love a bad ass FMC, unique magic system, Unseelie + Seelie Courts, mix of urban fantasy, action, romance, lust, humor and so much more: start with Fortuna Sworn.

Authors need to stop stretching books over ridiculously long series. This would have made an excellent trilogy. Instead it was a lacklustre six part series with a underwhelming ending apart from the last page. There was just too much build up for the ending we got. Think Game of Thrones tv show. Dragged out, over complicated and a bunch of little endings.
While it was nice to have all the loose ends tied up, I had
1. Stopped caring because the book dragged on so much
2. Oh wait no that’s it. I just didn’t care.

I can't believe this series is over! I am going to miss the characters in this world, but I'm glad Fortuna finally gets the break that she needs.

Fortuna's character development, in my opinion, felt realistic. Progress is not always linear and no one is perfect.

Throughout the series, we see the battle within herself when it came to using her powers as a Nightmare. Wielding her ability to use another's fear to achieve her her motivations--from rescuing her brother, wading through the Unseelie faeries she despised, but was reluctantly committed to as queen, and protecting her loved ones. We see this each time she remembers Collith telling her to choose mercy.

The tears were flowing towards the the last quarter of Violent Awakening, I had to get up and get tissues! The found family aspect in this series was strongly written and I love how Fortuna was so welcoming with arms wide open with "collecting her strays," as Laurie called it.

I was so proud of how she handled the last chapters when it came to her romantic relationships (no spoilers).

The plot twists and reveals even Fortuna didn't see coming were simply excellent, especially the callbacks from the previous books and how they ended up tied to this finale.

I’m struggling to find the words to properly convey what this series has meant to me. I found Fortuna Sworn pretty early on in my bookstagram journey, when I was finally branching out from mainstream authors to finding indie favorites. The first book and this whole world just completely captured me, and has had me in a chokehold for the last 3 years as each new book in the series has come out. There’s now 6 total, and Violent Awakening is the final one in the series. Saying goodbye to these characters is so bittersweet.

After that many books and that many years, you grow so attached to characters. The three main characters in this story hold my entire heart, but the side characters? If you love found family, this is 1000% the series for you. Fortuna truly builds her own family from the most random places. I feel like I can’t say too much about this last book without giving away too much, and I just hope that everyone uses this as an excuse to pick it up, if I haven’t made you already. 💕

I was laughing, smiling and hysterically crying through this whole book, and while I’m still processing my feelings, I’m so thankful that Fortuna got the ending she deserved! Thank you so much to KJ for reaching out to me to send me an early copy. I just adore you and your mind and the worlds and characters you create!

I didn’t like this ending which makes me incredibly sad considering this has been one of my favourite series.

It feels like there were a lot of loose ends and vague endings and just a lot of things I didn’t love. The pacing was off so at times I was not necessarily bored but at the same time I was like come on when is something going to happen.

I thought we would see more growth from Fortuna, especially since her biggest fear was herself but we didn’t really see her grow or overcome that. I also didn’t like how much she was relying on fighting with a sword when she’s a literal Nightmare. Also, the way her magic changed in the end wasn’t really explained well. I did like that she did go back to school.

I honestly loved Collith and Laurie in this book but at the same time they didn’t really do anything or have any development themselves.

I am so incredibly disappointed in how Fortuna, Collith and Laurie’s relationship ended. It was very vague and confusing. There was a lot of angst between Fortuna and the boys but I don’t understand why Fortuna kept pulling back. I don’t know why she couldn’t tell Collith she loved him even in the end and I thought that was super unfair after everything he had done for her. There was a lot of tension between Fortuna and Laurie that was unresolved because she technically chose Collith in the end but she also didn’t. But what kills me is that they weren’t even really a throuple in the end. I know we had the one scene with the three of them which I didn’t even like and the ending alluded to it but I wanted to fucking see them together. They didn’t even have a conversation about being together as a threesome, we never saw Collith and Laurie reunite or forgive each other and it was so vague in the end I don’t know if they are together romantically or not. I remember getting towards the end of the book and thinking are we seriously ending their relationship like this?? Omg I’m disappointed.

The whole thing with Lucifer was very underwhelming. The war was probably my favourite part of the book but it kind of fizzled out, everything was too easy, no one important died (sorry Viesa) and the way Lucifer was killed in the end was so meh.

I didn’t really care about Ollie. She forgave him so quickly considering he killed Finn and her fucking parents and I hate that Fortuna slept with him. In the end I did feel bad for him cause he couldn’t control the Beast but his death didn’t really pull much emotion from me. Also Ollie killing her parents didn’t even make sense and it wasn’t explained.

We never found out why Emma was sick in the last book. I found the time travel thing with Nym confusing, especially when he randomly popped up at the end. I didn’t like that Fortuna and Damon NEVER had a conversation about what happened with Jasin. Like I wish Damon properly apologised for being an asshole to her for killing him. I loved Gil but we didn’t see much of him. I feel so fucking bad for Lyari and everything that happened to her. Like I guess I was happy she was Queen in the end but she had such a tragic ending. I also didn’t like that Finn never really came up in this book.

I don’t know. I still love these characters and I’m still attached to this story but I’m glad this series is over so it can be put to bed.

my sister once said to me "I hope you get a thousand paper cuts, fall into a vat of lemon juice and tread on Legos when you step out"

But recommending this series was the meanest thing she has ever said to me. I will never forgive you.

I finished this series as some perverse way to get into heaven via my suffering on earth. Fortuna remained irritating, impulsive and unlikable all the way through, she is a major ick.

This series started off so strong and then just got lost along the way. I think this series should have only been 4 books max and I feel like all of the side characters had more growth and development than Fortuna. She never grew or learned from her mistakes and honestly was my least favorite character in the book. I also thought the way the romance plot line tied up was very lacking.

The series is finally over, and it got more and more complicated as time went on. I had to try to collect my thoughts because it was a lot to process. Everything is so messy and that's part of why some of it is entertaining. I got to a point where I was annoyed with Fortuna, because of several choices made throughout this book. This girl was after everyone~ damn. I get the emotional baggage that she carries as she's clearly gone through a lot, but sometimes a choice needs to be made, and not just about the men in her life. I also wish parts of the story were sped up because things got so complicated. I wish we got to see more of her family, everyone processing Finn's death more clearly, etc throughout the book because it felt like the focus was usually away from them compared to the last books.

I was hoping for a bit more character development from Fortuna because she keeps making the same mistakes and it was frustrating to read sometimes.

On one end, I was tricked towards the end and upset, but also happy because this girl needs some time- some good old fashion, focus on yourself time. On the other end, I did not read all of these books for her to end up alone, so thank goodness for the last bit. I'm just glad that after everything she's gone through, things ended simply for everyone all around after being true to their own feelings and want they wanted out of life. I really wish we got more than a rushed tie up at the end to explain more of their dynamic, what they each did to get where they are now.

Nym will remain my favorite, but I still have questions about the runner up of Hello. Where did she go after the battle? Unless that already eluded my mind after a couple of days.

I really wanted to love Violent Awakening after how much I enjoyed books 1–4, but this installment was a tough read for me. Much of the story felt padded with filler, and the constant focus on Fortuna’s libido pulled attention away from the larger narrative. That said, the battle scene was excellent—fast-paced, emotional, and easily the highlight of the book. While I appreciate the closure of finishing the series, this book didn’t capture the same magic or momentum that made the earlier entries so compelling.

Holy crap, you scared me for a second there Sutton, but luckily, ‘nothing ends, there are only continuations and beginnings.’

I’m slightly sad now, The Fortuna Sworn series has been with me for quite some time and while I am contented they all got their happy endings, there is a deep sadness and longing in closing the book to this world. Thank you for writing from your heart and creating such magnificent and poignant characters. I think they will stay with me for quite a while.

I am so sad to say goodbye to Fortuna, Colith and Laurie but at the same time I’m glad this series is finished and everyone has their happy ending 🥹🥰

I did feel like there was a lull in the middle of this book and I got a bit bored but the last third of it made up for it. The last battle scene was done so well and so detailed, I couldn’t stop reading and could picture everything in my mind so clearly.

I was very worried about where this was going to end up after all the cliffhangers of the previous books. The story evolved so much from where we started, but everything was tied up in the end. Even the small seemingly inconsequential parts of the story.
I loved this series so much! It took you on an adventure and the twists kept you wondering what was going to happen. I cannot wait to read this story again.

Finally

Although I feel that a couple chapters were rushed, I am pleased with the ending. Endings are always difficult for me; I never feel satisfied. However, this ending made me happy. The Fortuna Sworn series is incredible and I always recommend it to everyone. It is not hyped up enough.

This is a beautiful conclusion to Fortuna’s story. I sobbed reading the ending. Everyone’s story was wrapped up so beautifully, and the ending was left open enough for readers to make their own conclusion about who Fortuna chose. And I think we can all learn from Nym’s words to Fortuna…. “You’re wasting it….time.” This series and these characters will stay with me forever.
