My spiritual director recommended this book...because he wrote it. It was a good recommendation. The author draws from multiple sources throughout the Christian tradition, as well as personal accounts, to show how a life surrendered to God is a life fully lived. This is not a full denial of self and lack of pleasure, but rather a fuller embrace of who God has made me, the joy he desires to share, and the fullness of life that he desires for now and all eternity. A major challenge for me is the idea of being a pleasure-receiver, rather than a pleasure-seeker. A pleasure-seeker gains pleasure through their own pursuits and desires; often becoming selfish. A pleasure-receiver gains pleasure through the good things that God is and that God gives all around us. A pleasure-receiver is gracious and gains from God--the giver of all life--rather than from selfish desires. Each chapter ends with a prayer activity. Sometimes these felt forced, but overall it was a good way to reflect on each chapter.

© 1997. Some good parts but overall disappointing. Here are some gems, though: "Surrender is the inner stance from which discernment flows.... The depth of our surrender is reflected in the depth of our compassion - the link is unbreakable.... Authentic prayer is an act of surrender; therefore, it requires trust."
