A Second Look

Rate this book
Her best friend's life was a mess and she would have done anything to make things better for him and his sons. So, when she found her former enemy in a similar situation her heart went out to him as well... and the beautiful blond baby in his arms didn't hurt his case. It was certainly enough for her to give him a second look.

I just realized that I never took the time to write my review and it's been 2 months already!

Many years after the end of the War, Harry is newly divorced, and Hermione decides to take care of his two boys for the afternoon to give him a break. She didn't expect to run into a frantic Draco trying to calm his crying baby. Deciding to offer him assistance leads them to spending the afternoon at Hermione's flat, where she gets a chance to meet this new, more mature, and much more open-minded Draco, and it doesn't take long for them to fall for each other.

While I adored this sweet, responsible, and mature daddy Draco, and Hermione being the godmother to Harry's children and taking care of Scorpius, I find that the romance moved a little too fast. I understand that they were brought together partly because of Scorpius, because he is just so freaking adorable and they both love him, I think I would have enjoyed a little more of the flirting before they jumped into a steady relationship.

On the plus side, this is a fanfic about two grown-ups falling in love and getting together, knowing that it will impact the life of a baby, so it is a steady and strong romance. They are both mature, know what they want, and can sit down and talk when they need to, it's a nice change from the YA romance/fantasy I often read with younger MCs. Draco knew what he wanted from the start, and he didn't stop until he got it. There is not a lot of angst and drama between Draco and Hermione, making this fanfiction a cute and fluffy read.

I also liked to see Harry and Hermione's friendship in this fiction. We could see how much they loved each other, and how their relationship was purely platonic. They behaved as brothers and sisters would, and I live for those strong M/F friendships in stories. I just love them so much!

Overall, this is a fluffy and cute fanfic, but it borders on the insta-love (in my opinion) and the plot is not that developed beside the romance. It's still a great fanfic to read if you are just looking for something sweet and wholesome to get your mind off of things.

4 ⭐ One of the sweetest dad Draco fanfics

Words: 127,243 | Chapters: 30

"He'd watched her fall in love with his son in the blink of an eye as she cradled him that first time, and in that short time he was pretty sure he fell in love too.

From that moment on he'd been on a mission, for Scorpius, but also for himself: they were going to keep her. He'd give her the world if that's what it took. He'd make their world a place she couldn't bear to leave."

Summary:

To give her recently divorced best friend some alone time, Hermione takes Harry Potter's sons, James and Albus, to Diagon Alley. During a quick stop to the apothecary, she witnesses a frantic Draco Malfoy causing a scene while cradling a screaming baby. Feeling sympathy for him, she offers her assistance and ends up inviting Draco and his son to her flat to give them some useful muggle baby products for teething. They end up spending a wonderful afternoon together filled with children, the Lion King, Thai food, and honest conversation.

When Harry arrives to pick up his sons, he's wary of Draco, but by the end of dinner, he's convinced Draco has changed and is completely smitten with Hermione. And once Draco and Scorpius leave, even Hermione can't deny that she may be a little smitten with them as well.

10 Years Post War | Dad Draco | Divorced Draco | Godmother Hermione | Ron Bashing | Harry & Hermione Friendship | Draco & Pansy Friendship | Fluff | Fast-Paced Romance | Fertility Issues

My Thoughts:

I absolutely loved A Second Look. Honestly, there's nothing I didn't like so let me share all the things I loved!

Hermione and Draco's relationship moved quickly. I usually find this unrealistic, but somehow it totally worked in this story. Scorpius brings them together, so for his sake, Draco and Hermione had to decide quickly if they were ready and willing for a serious relationship.

This is a mature, steady story. It's been 10 years since the war, and both Draco and Hermione have been through a lot and grown up. It was refreshing to read a Dramione fanfic where they're both responsible and level-headed (for the most part).

There's also not a whole lot of angst which made the reading experience soothing. Of course, there are some bumps in the road *Astoria* and *Ron* and *rogue Death Eaters* but the way Draco and Hermione handle these situations is typically with maturity.

Soft, possessive Draco for the win! Draco knew what he wanted from the get-go and wouldn't stop until Hermione was his. I freaking love that! Not only was he willing to do anything to get Hermione, but he does everything to protect her. That is the sexiest type of fanon Draco IMO.

Scorpius stole my heart. I know how Hermione feels because after reading about this adorable baby, I was seriously considering having one. (Okay, the thought was fleeting, but STILL, I had it.) I love the interactions Hermione and Draco have with Scorpius and that we get to witness big moments in his life (like standing up on his own or his first words).

Harry and Hermione's friendship is so pure. Regardless of all the rumors, Harry and Hermione have always been strictly platonic - basically brother and sister. They are so loyal, loving, understanding, and supportive. The epitome of friendship. 🙌

Pansy was a delight. If anything, I wanted more of her and hope we see that in the sequel!

F*ck Ron. He's an absolute POS in this fanfic, so if you hate Ron/Weasley bashing, don't even bother. Not only did Ron cheat on Hermione when they were together, but he constantly rubs her infertility in her face and publically throws a tantrum to mess with Hermione and Draco's relationship. I don't think I've read another fanfic where I hated him so much.

Hermione's fertility issues were handled delicately. I really liked that this was an aspect of the story. I think Hermione's struggle made her appreciate and value children, so she was the best godmother to James and Albus and an amazing mother figure to Scorpius. So glad things worked out for her in the end!

Overall, this was a solid fluffy Dramione story that you should read if you're into a soft, dad Draco and a fast-paced Dramione relationship.

Fluff
Basically love at first sight at the apothecary for Draco when Hermione helped him soothe a crying Scorpius. I love Pansy and Draco’s friendship here, it is as strong as Hermione’s and Harry’s. What I hate was Ginny didn’t end up with Harry and was jealous of the friendship. Ron was basically the lowest form of scum, cheating, gambling, ratting out his friends and etc.

It was just very quick. Draco just finalised divorcing Astoria and hes already earnestly and eagerly courting Hermione and hoping she would be the mother to Scorpius. Don’t get me wrong, I love the trope of Hermione being a step mom to Scorpius but this timeline just wasn’t realistic. Draco was basically making all his decisions based on Hermione.

My angst-obsessed self, reading this fluffy fest.

description

You can probably tell who the story is and who is me. This was a very sweet, single dad with insta-love trope. The story read more contemporary than rom-com not much suspense or angst either. Enjoyed it and wanted to finish but not the most memorable of the fics I have read.

Although every time Draco was a complete snob on Hermione's behalf were some of my favorite moments.

I don’t get how so many people are in love with this fic. The premises was so good and promising, but 2 chapters in I’m DNF-ing this. First of all, the author feels very bigoted. We are expected to believe Hermione finds excusable and even a little funny pure-bloods behavior, not being outrage one bit. Then, the author says Astoria suffered 2 miscarriages, throws around postpartum depression, but immediately ignores all the emotional turmoil a women goes through and paints her as an absolute villain for not bounding with her son. I’m not sure if the author is either a men or a women who never had children and probably is also young enough to not have been around a lot of people with babies yet, not that it would excuse the blant misogyny. Astoria is evil for not wanting her child, Hermione is the absolute best because all she wants is children, even someone else’s just so she can have children. Also the children in this story act absolutely like no real child their age ever acts. And to put a cherry on top, we are expected to believe Malfoy, Draco freaking Malfoy, is hand holding and kissing on the cheek Hermione just after one afternoon spent together from being almost strangers who occasionally saw each other at public events. Nothing about this story feel well written, such a waste.

I’m a massive fan of slow burn romances so I have to say this relationship developed pretty fast for my tastes. However, the story was so fun and I loved all the different relationships developed with multiple characters throughout!

Such a sweet fic. I needed a bit of mind bleach and this for the job done! We have DILF Draco and ministry worker Hermione reuniting almost a decade after the war. The reconnect while Draco is going through a divorce and it's super sweet. They only thing that turned me off was the timeline. It took place within a matter of weeks and they moved really fast. Still, super cute and I recommend

This is like fluff and sugar in a book. Draco as a DILF was smth else 😮‍💨 and although it was a cute and fun read, ima be honest: I wanted some good banter. I feel like their relationship developed wayyy too fast for my liking and that Draco was too quick to trust her. Like wheres the angst and the tension in that 😞 overall, definitely recommend bc hello? Scorp exists, and that says enough.

3.25*

While this was a sweet and romantic story, the romance between our characters happened really quickly and it would’ve been nice had it been drawn out just a smidge or two more. Draco not only seemed to fall for Hermione from the start, but he was also still married when he first became interested in pursuing her. Nothing happened between them before the divorce was finalized, but the fact that his prior relationship hadn’t quite been as over-and-done with as implied, made me dislike how quicky he jumped from his ex-wife (Astoria) to a relationship with Hermione. There was something mildly cringey about this.

Additionally, on one hand, I loved that fact that Scorpius immediately had Hermione wrapped around his little finger, but on the other hand, there were times when it felt like Hermione was more interested in playing a motherly (or possibly godmotherly) role. As a baby, Scorpius was easy to love, and Hermione fell hard, which was beautiful. And yet, because of this, it was like Draco was less of a priority (even when she decided to be in a relationship with him). I never wanted to feel like Hermione was with Draco because of Scorpius, but rather, that she was with him because she loved them both, which I don’t think was always the feeling conveyed.

Nevertheless, both of them are at a point in their lives where they know what they want (especially Draco) and we see Draco pursue Hermione relentlessly, which was a lot of fun. Because there wasn’t a lot of past angst between them, this made for a lighter and fluffier read where we could almost solely focus on the feelings that are growing between our couple. And I did love how willing Hermione was to step in and be the mom Scorpius deserved.

I liked seeing Draco as a responsible grown-up who’s priority is taking care of his son as well. We open with him stressed out about how he can best help his son, and I really enjoyed how focused and determined he was to be the best dad to Scorpius he could be (and have a completely different relationship than Draco and his own father had had growing up). It was a lot of fun to watch.

I also really appreciated how Hermione’s fertility issues were handled throughout this book. It was done delicately, I think, and I thought it was a more unique spin on seeing the long-term effects of the curses that people were hit with.

I loved seeing Hermione and Harry’s relationship as well. It was so pure and showcased such a platonic brotherly/sisterly bond between them. I really enjoyed how supportive they were of each other.

Draco and Pansy, on the other hand, was simply okay. If felt like more of a concession to include their relationship – a counterpart to Harry and Hermione’s close bond. It wasn’t wholly convincing, but I still enjoyed watching Hermione and Pansy become friends – and the snipping between Harry and Pansy as well.

However, I really disliked Ron’s character arc throughout this story (or really, pretty much all of the Weasley’s). Not only did he cheat on Hermione when they’d been together, but he’s turned into a bitter and cruel caricature. This, more than anything, felt really disingenuous to the story, because he seemed simply unrecognizable. I’ve read other fanfictions where Ron really makes a mess of his situation, but I don’t think I’ve hated him more than I have throughout this story and really, I don’t know that there was much of a need for it. There seemed to be a lot of drama surrounding the Weasley’s that was a bit unnecessary and it wasn’t something I was overly thrilled with.

This was a fast-paced, but really cute story. I think the biggest issue was the pacing (with things happening too quickly), but otherwise, a solid read and something I think most could enjoy.

Hermione is perfect and always right and extremely boring.

Draco is perfect and endlessly considerate and extremely boring.

This is the story of two people with no personality who instantly fall in love with each other for no obvsious reason, who are constantly in awe of each other and constantly speechless of how in awe the other is of them.

There is no tension between the two, no character or relationship development and barely a plot for most of the book. Conflicts feel very forced. Characters are very not canon (Hermione saying to Lavender “my boyfriend is more attractive, powerful, intelligent and rich then yours”?!, what in the immature dialogue is this?).

This was so boring, I’m so sorry. I initially DNFed before even finishing the first chapter, but gave it a second look (haha!) when I landed on the audiobook version. 90% of the book is sickeningly saccharine to the point of frustration.

The story did improve in my opinion when it started focusing less on the couple and more on other things like the blood magic and Ron’s spiraling life, although this was only like the last 10-15% of the story total. But I’m still not a fan of basically bashing the entire Weasley family, Ron’s depiction only being the most over the top.

I appreciate the dedication and willingness of fanfiction writers who put their work out there to be scrutinized. I felt more comfortable putting my honest opinion considering that, obviously, a lot of people liked this fic, so it might just not be for me.

"He'd watched her fall in love with his son in the blink of an eye as she cradled him that first time, and in that short time he was pretty sure he fell in love too."

★★★ 3 stars

♡ 127,243 words (novel-length)
♡ 10 years post-war
♡ dad draco (heavy scorpius presence)
♡ strong hermione and harry friendship
♡ almost insta-love romance
♡ heavy ron-bashing (the audacity??)
♡ lots of fluff

I was expecting to enjoy this more than I did. There were a few grammar mistakes that took me out of the narrative, and honestly at times it felt like I was forcing myself to continue reading because I found myself bored. While I can appreciate that parenthood changes people's perspectives, Draco and Hermione are both too quick to fall in love with each other and disregard the past - There's very little angst, making this an overall a fast-paced, very fluffy and soft read.

This was so cute dramione fanfic, with Scorp in it<3

Also, kind reminder that this is DILF DRACO fic, so it's impossible to not fall in love with him.

I seriously loved Hermione in this, cause she was such a good mum to Scorpius and a good girlfriend/fiance to Draco. I'm glad that miscommunication was left in the minimum in this fic, because I always get so frustrated. Also, it's not that I don't love toxic dramione, but it was refreshing to read about them in a healthy relationship (Since Dramione is famously known for toxicity, violence, war etc.)

One slight thing bothered me, tho and it was the timeline. Everything honestly happened so fast and in few weeks, they were already living together and Scorpius was calling Hermione 'mum'. But then again, I'm happy Hermione didn't back out all that much, like she usually does tend to do in fanfics.

Overall, five stars! I loved the writing, the relationship and especially Scorpius!

This was seriously one of the sweetest dramione fanfics I’ve ever read. I loved hot for teacher, it got me hooked on single parent, dad draco/mom hermione fics. But there’s something about single dads that hits in the best way. *cough, cough, Draco Malfoy, cough.* He does it better, always.
And in this fic Draco was emotional, sweet, super charming, and swoon worthy. I just adored this version of him. My heart melted over and over again until the last chapter.
Also there were so many hilarious scenes that had me cackling!!
And I really appreciated that the big end of the story obstacle wasn’t them breaking up like in every romance fanfic/book.
If I could give this story 10/5 stars I totally would, and I’ll definitely be reading it again!!

According to the tags this fic contains many of the tropes I enjoy. Ron-bashing? Check. Dad-Draco? Check. Post-war? Check. Competent and independent Hermione? Check. Draco redemption? Check. In theory, this should be right up my alley.

But no. This was NOT it for me for several reasons. Though the plot in theory is an enjoyable one, the execution of said plot is rushed, unrealistic and the dialogue caused me to cringe violently on more than one occasion. I will give this fic two star due to its potential regarding the plot, but it is a stretch.

But let's not stop there. Here's a list of things that made me wish I'd never started reading this fic. I really had to force myself to finish the last 300 pages, even though I was aware that I had passed the point of no return plotwise.

1. I don't EVER want to hear Draco calling someone, Hermione, or anyone else for that matter, sweetness. It's so OOC, please stop.
2. I love a good Ron-bashing, but really? What was this? I almost threw away my phone when Narcissa referred to Ron as a 'man whore'. A lot of bad things can be said about Ron, but he is not a womanizer. Completely gross.
3. Scorpius presence is just filler fluff. All he does is giggle and drool and make Hermione feel even more drawn to Draco. Gross. For the love of God, give me a Scorpius á la Measure of a man.
4. The progression of the relationship. If it had been physically possible Hermione and Draco would have had 5 kids by the end of their first year together. It is COMPLETELY OOC for both Draco and Hermione to be so impulsive. Hermione is the master of overthinking and Draco is way too reserved to ask anyone to marry him in such a short time.
5. The flowers at the beginning of the fic. Cringe and archaic.
6. Why is Hermione such a door mat when it comes to Ron? Why would she be?
7. Why are Hermiones parents so accepting of the fact that their daughter marries her high school bully, now turned single dad and ex Death eater?
8. The whole warding drama at the end of the drama, give me a break! It's giving 'trying so so so hard to come up with some kind of turnpoint/climax' before this very flat and uneventful story comes to an end.
9. Narcissa and Lucius accepting Hermione almost instantly as a part of their family. No gracias.
10. Underwhelming smut that lacked true tension.

I'm a Measure of a man/Remain nameless/slow burn-girlie and this was not it for me.

2.5/5 ⭐️ This one felt like it should have worked for me based on the premise (I love a found family story), but I didn’t gel with the writing. This had aspects I enjoyed, most related to the familiar characters. The inclusion of kids was fun, and there were some solid friendship and family relationships. However, the romance development did not feel remotely natural to me. It felt rushed, similarly to other aspects of the plot and world building. The characters would often explain a topic to the audience that didn’t fit with their situation or nature, just to info dump, which also took me out of the story. This wasn’t bad, I was just let down because I had high hopes based on the idea of the story. 🫂👥☁️

3.5⭐️ Really cute HEA sweet Draco and baby Scorp fic! I loved the meet up, the story and plot, the relationship with Hermione and Scorp, Hermione and Harry…! I like so much in the story! But I had a few things that I wanted to see that dropped the rating a bit. (Specifics coming: so spoiler alert 🚨): Expect another scummy Ron, and out of character people like Ginny and Molly. But it was rather a bit choppy for me when it came to their abrupt love, no first sex scene (what?!?!?), awkward first I love you, and no scene for when he presents a ring. Also I would have liked to have seen Dramione experience pregnancy.
