Aquilino Gomes Ribeiro was a Portuguese writer and diplomat. He is considered as one of the great Portuguese novelists of the 20th century. He was nominated for the Nobel Literature Prize in 1960.

Natural son of Joaquim Francisco Ribeiro, a priest, and Mariana do Rosário Gomes, he had three older siblings: Maria do Rosário, Melchior and Joaquim. Destinated to priesthood, Aquilino Ribeiro got involved in republican politics, opposing the Portuguese monarchy, and had to exile himself in Paris; he returned to Portugal in 1914, after the Republican Revolution of 1910.

He was involved in the opposition to António de Oliveira Salazar and the Estado Novo, whose government tried to censor or ban several of his books.

He married twice, firstly in 1913 to German Grete Tiedemann (ca. 1890-1927), by whom he had a son Aníbal Aquilino Fritz Tiedeman Ribeiro in 1914, and secondly in Paris in 1929 to Jerónima Dantas Machado, daughter of the deposed President of Portugal Bernardino Machado, by whom he had a son Aquilino Ribeiro Machado, born in Paris in 1930, who became the 60th Mayor of Lisbon (1977–1979).

Classic Portuguese author of the XVI century, originally from Montemor-o-Velho, from the coastal region, having died in Almada, near Lisbon, in Extremadura. It is an adventure book, a diary. It talks about the East, India, Malaysia, Sumatra, the Maluku islands, China, and Japan. He also talks about customs, fauna, flora, and the adventures he went through, having done everything like all those who went to the east, who sought to enrich themselves with the spices of these places. It was believed to be a fantasy for a long time, but foreigners proved that what is described here is true.

Disappointing beyond words; an uninteresting narration of impossible events that neither entertains, excites or educates the mind. As a serious literary work, it is laughable; as a comedic exercise, it is tiresome. It is beyond me how, in a country of writers and poets, a book such as this can be considered a classic of any kind.

A bit tiresome to read, although it has very interesting glimpses into South Asia sea-fare in the XVI century.

A lot more violent than I expected, in particular from the Portuguese side. The Portuguese expedition killed and robbed innocent, and even desecrated tombs that had priests watching over them (to get the silver buried with the dead).
