Di Frank Farrell #3

His drinking is getting worse. Farrell is using alcohol to self medicate to try and block out his guilt. This case is set in Dumfries, Scotland. The only lead they have is from something that happened years ago.

Avenge the Dead is the third instalment in the Dumfries and Galloway-set series featuring Detective Inspector Frank Farrell. Frank, DS Mhairi McLeod and DC Dave Thomson are sent from their hub in the heart of Glasgow to Dumfries which unfortunately stirs up many negative memories for Frank. They are there to investigate the murder of an esteemed local defence solicitors wife, Gina Campbell, and shortly after the adopted son of another prominent Dumfries solicitor is brutally slain; it begins to ...more

I would like to thank Netgalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for an advance copy of Avenge the Dead, the third novel to feature DI Frank Farrell.

When a prominent defence solicitors wife is murdered Frank, DS Mhairi McLeod and DC Dave Thomson are sent to Dumfries from their new base in Glasgow MIT to investigate. They are happy to reunite with their old team but less happy with the memories. Their job gets more complicated when the son of another defence solicitor is murdered.

A gritty police procedural wher the team of Farrell, Mhairi, and Thomson were sent to Dumfries to solve the murder of the wife of criminal solicitor. The suspense ratchetted when another murder occurred, and the team realized that it was connected to a case 10 years ago.

My first book by author Jackie Baldwin, the third in the series, I loved the speed in which the team worked. Due to the happenings to their colleague in book 2, Farrell was at the last strings of his sanity, so this case was

Avenge The Dead is an exquisite case study on how the past never truly can stay buried. Life in the spotlight can have dire consequences. The invisible bands that hold together relationships and families can violently tear with no means to be repaired. The story paints a vivid picture of how an action change the landscape of ones life forever. This gritty police procedural ticked all the boxes. Jackie Baldwin gently coaxed me down an unsuspecting path before setting her trap I aimlessly walked ...more

I have read all of Jackie Baldwin's excellent detective series featuring former Roman Catholic priest. DI Frank Farrell. This is the third book in the series and I have enjoyed every one of them. I felt that this was the best yet and I couldn't put it down, but at the same time didn't want the book to finish as it was so good. Well done Jackie and I'm really looking forward to what I hope will be a fourth book in the series.

Another new author for me and I am reading half way through a series. A good read unfortunately I haven't read the previous books so I was missing an awful lot of the back story. The past is often mentioned but with no details. Can this book be read as a stand alone yes I think so. Personally I will be definitely be searching out the rest of this series and read from the start.
Thanks to HarperCollins UK and One More Chapter and Netgalley for the ARC.

In Dumfries, a young solicitors wife is stabbed to death in her own house. The husband was covered in blood and his prints are on the knife, but he has an alibi from 2 criminal defence lawyers and a prosecutor from the fiscal office who says that they were playing poker with him at the time of the murder. The 2 children were at the nannys house. The local police ask Police Scotland for a Major Enquiries Team and DS Mhairi Mc Leod, DI Frank Farrell and DC Dave Thomson are sent to investigate as ...more

Okay, I literally just finished this bookit's been one of those weeksabout 30 minutes after my self-imposed "you have to start writing at this point" rule. So you're getting pipin' hot opinions here, fresh from the oven. I haven't had a chance to reflect too much on the book as a whole, but I think I can find a thing or two to say. Because of my time crunch, I'll leave the synopsis bit of this post to the Book Spotlight that I postedit's

I love this series! DI Frank Farrell is a fabulously complex character with an intriguing background and Ive really enjoyed watching his personal development through these three books. After the last book where an investigation led to personal tragedy, Frank and Mhairi are back to investigate the death of the wife of a defence solicitor. But when more murders follow, they realise that the deaths may be connected to a fire 10 years ago in which a young woman tragically burnt to death.

The third book in the DI Frank Farrell series by Jackie Baldwin. This is my first book by Baldwin and most certainly won't be the last. She has got a great talent for crime thriller writing, but I'm guessing you don't need me to tell you that.

As I said this is my first book of Baldwin's, therefore, I haven't read the previous two books in this series. I know I've missed out on some thrilling cases though, given the fact that one of Farrell's team member is in a coma, and Farrell has left the

*I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from the tour organiser.

It felt so great to be back with Farrell and McLeod even if it was under such dark and chilling circumstances, and I can safely say that AVENGE THE DEAD by Jackie Baldwin is my favourite book so far in this series (but I definitely recommend that you read all three).

When a wealthy solicitor's wife is found brutally murdered in her own home, it pulls DI Frank Farrell and DS McLeod back to the small community of Dumfries which

DS Mhairi McLeod and DI Frank Farrell are called to assist in the investigation in a neighboring city of Dumfries. The wife of a solicitor has been murdered. The husband has an alibi, but it seems pretty weak.

However, Frank is still being eaten alive over the very serious wounding of a fellow officer a year earlier. He has become somewhat unreliable with Mhairi covering for him. Dumfries is where Frank and Mhairi are from and he is very reluctant to go back there.

Almost immediately they

A Scottish police procedural, Avenge the Dead follows DI Frank Farrell and DS Mhairi McLeod as they are sent from Glasgow to Dumfries to investigate a shocking murder of a solicitors wife. Discovering the deceased had been cheating on her husband, they wonder if the case will be open and shut. When the body count starts mounting, though, Farrell and McLeod quickly realise this is no ordinary murder case and they need to act quickly to find the killer before another innocent dies.

#3 in the DI Frank Farrell series but can be read as a stand-alone.

When the wife of a defence solicitor is found murdered, DI Farrell, DS Mhairi McLeod and DC Thomson begin their investigation.

A second murder, this time the son of a different defence solicitor, things get even more complicated. Especially as there appear to be links to a case from 10 years ago.

While DI Farrell is struggling with guilt, hes taken to drinking far too much which makes him pretty useless at times and Mhairi ends up

4 Stars from me

It was great to catch up with DI Frank Farrell again - I last encountered him in Dead Man's Prayer.

DI Farrell pushes the boundaries of 'messed up cop' to the absolute limit but I found that made me root for him all the more.

He is a complex but doggedly driven character who just never seems to give him (except on himself) and that drive and determination means that he pursues the culprit to the bitter end - no matter what.

Avenge The Dead has a clever and multi-layered storyline and

A killer is on the loose.

Now, there's another murder and another victim -the son of another defense solicitor.

This is the 3rd book in the series starring Frank Farrell and the story jumps forward 2 years.

Frank has moved to Glasgow and is trying very hard to forget all his past cases from Dumfries, but he is called back, along with DS McLeod, and it seems like the old team is back together. However, a lot has changed for all of them in the intervening years and this fact, plus some nasty murders turning up on his patch, makes for challenging times for Farrell. What connects all these murders? Or are

Thanks to the author, publisher, and Emma Welton of Damp Pebbles Blog Tours for a copy of Avenge the Dead in exchange for an honest review.

Here's the short version of this review: It's an enjoyable police procedural/crime novel. Go read it.

If that's not enough to compel you, here's my longer review:

The book's prologue ends with an act of brutal violence: the fiery death of a nameless woman. But the fire doesn't come until after I felt sympathy for this woman, who apparently has some

'Avenge The Dead' is the third book in the series featuring Detective Inspector Frank Farrell. I have been a fan of the series since I had the good fortune to pick up the first book in the series called 'Dead Man's Prayer'. When I managed to get hold of a copy, I grabbed a cup of tea and settled down ready to read. Oh boy, 'Avenge The Dead' is another ...more

Avenge The Dead is the third in the DI Frank Farrell and DS Mhairi McLeod series a Scottish Police Procedural and for me it's a series that I'd love to read more of in the future. While I'm a great believer in reading a series from the beginning I would say the same with this but to be truthful it can be read as a standalone but don't deprive yourself of the pleasure gained from starting at the beginning. I always enjoy novels written about areas and places that I know and this is one of those, ...more

I received a free eARC of Avenge the Dead but that has in no way influenced my review.

Following the traumatic events of book two, Perfect Dead, DI Farrell and DS McLeod (along with DC Thomson) have relocated to Glasgow. Farrell is a mess, with a capital M. Having lost his faith (hes an ex-priest so thats kinda major!) and keeping a constant vigil at the bedside of his friend and DCI, John Lind, he turns to alcohol and prescription drugs

This was another riveting foray into the world of DI Frank Farrell! From the first chapter, I could not put this novel down, staying up late to finish just to see what would come next.

Not only are these characters are complex, but the world around them so multi-dimensional that it is easy to get lost within the pages, trying to piece together the clues as they come. It is easy to see how much time and effort the author put into researching and putting together each layer to bring the reader a

This is a fine, well written and engrossing story that has a number of threads.

We have a murder which brings DI Frank Farrell, DS McLeod and DC Thomas back to Dumfries. They dont really want to be there after the last time. Still orders are orders and an MIT unit has been requested.

The officers in Dumfries, unlike Frank, seem to have moved on with their lives whilst he is still hurting. With his colleague DI Lind still in a coma Franks faith has taken a battering. Will he be able to come

🚔 What a good murder mystery, with an old, gruesome death suspected of connecting to a new spate of fatal attacks seemingly centered on a small group of local barristers. The setting in Scotland, one of my favorite places, first drew me to the story but the excellent writing, character development and plot kept me.

This was my first time reading a Jackie Baldwin mystery and, though a good deal of the police
