Sometimes a surprise baby can lead to unexpected happy endings. *** It started one night in Vegas over a naughty cocktail and dirty banter. Eight months of bedded bliss later, Gilly Nelson says the two words Ezra Baker never saw coming:
“I’m pregnant.”
Twice-divorced Ezra has always acted first, thought it through later. Except in Gilly he finds an equal; a strong-willed, independent woman who doesn’t need his money or kind heart to get ahead. She just wants him.
Career-focused Gilly never imagined she’d be thirty-five, single and pregnant. Except when Ezra suggests they date rather than just mate, she finds herself wondering whether the man she’s been looking for has been in her bed all along.
If they can survive raging hormones, house renovations, and the realities of childbirth, surely creating a family will be a walk in the park...right? *** Working For It is a full-length house flipping romantic comedy that can be read as a complete standalone and is the fifth and final book in the Cook Brothers series. This is the story of the brother from another mother, Ezra Baker, and the one he never saw coming.

I skipped the two books previous to this one because second chance where the mcs had actual relationships with others doesn't say true and epic love to me....neither does friends to lovers where the H is a manwhore....taking me to this book
Ezra is the best friend of Jamie and an honorary Cook brother Gilly is the high powered attorney sister if Ronnie They've been hooking up casually(thankfully with no others) for eight months A positive pregnancy test makes them realize they want more from each other Lots of ooey gooey sweetness and a bouncing baby soon follow
The one thing that irked me was that Ezra had been married twice before, this is a ME issue however
*******In all honesty I'd rate this book a high 2.5* because the plot was pretty similar to another in the series and nothing really happened throughout the book BUT I've started reading the latest Jessica Prince novel and the manwhore trope makes me appreciate Ezra and his sweetness even more so a lovely non manwhore/no cheating/no OW or OM drama bump rates this book at 4.....
“Alright. Boxers or briefs?” “Calvins to the day I die. They’re very …supportive.” “And I bet there’s a lot to fill them out,” she shoots back with a sly smile. Oh, she has no idea. But she will.”
I rest my case - do you really need to name the brand ? It doesn’t makes the story more interesting or sophisticated
Man, I love this author and this series. She has made me so damn happy with every single one of these books! *happy sigh*
No one ever looks forward to reading the last book of a series they have loved from the beginning. However, most times, if series don’t wrap up at the 5 to 7 book mark, they start to get a little less shinny. This series was perfect as it was and I’m not saying I love that it’s ended, but I’m saying I love that BJ now is going on to anew project :) Plus, she did a really good job with the end on this one so no one should be upset.
If you’re one of us, the ones that have read from the beginning, then this story you’ve probably been looking forward to for a bit. I was, and it didn’t disappoint. I had no clue what direction BJ would take with Gilly & Ezra and this was perfection! Nothing like ending a series with a let’s just throw caution to the wind and do this already! romance journey. IT WAS PERFECT FOR THESE TWO! The story was low of conflict and high on heart. If you’re a fan, you are going to adore this book. If you’re just starting out, you’ll like it also, but you would LOVE it if you started from the beginning! Food for thought ….
Gilly and Ezra have known each other for a long time, they are in the same social circle of friends and extended families. Until recently there hasn’t been anything between them but after hooking up at a wedding they have been enjoying a FWB relationship.
This phase of no strings attached fun becomes a bit more real after a positive pregnancy test. Ezra has been married twice before so isn’t afraid of commitment. He has enjoyed the freedom of having fun with Gilly but is surprised when she breaks the news to him. His immediate response does not go well but the intention behind it was well meant.
After taking a bit of time to think, Ezra sets out to show Gilly that he will be there for her and their baby in every way. He knows that Gilly is an independent, successful woman who doesn’t need material things from any man. However, the news that he is going to be a father has made his future a lot clearer. He wants to be with Gilly, he already knows the physical attraction is there and they have amazing sexual chemistry. Now he needs to show her more of him and what they could be.
When Ezra declares his intention to date Gilly she is initially bummed that he wants to slow things down physically but she does find this side of him quite adorable. She begins to see him in a totally different light, she had no idea the man she had been looking for to spend her life with was hidden under all that hot sexiness. Honestly, he is the perfect daddy and she can see what an amazing family they could be too.
Okay, so this was one of those books I randomly decided to read on a whim and it was the perfect read at the right time. I was in the mood for something different and this story definitely met the brief :) No awful angsty bits, lots of laugh out loud moments and great banter among their friends perfectly concludes this five book series.
4.5 stars. I really loved this! This series is new to me but I had no problem jumping right into the story. What surprised me was how low angst this book was and honestly it was refreshing. Ezra was the sweetest and swooniest book boyfriend I’ve read about in a long time and now I can’t wait to read more by this author!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Working for It is the 5th book in the Cook Brothers series. What a bittersweet end to this series. I loved Gilly and Ezra! I’ve been anticipating Ezra’s story from the beginning of the series and it was SO good! As with every other book in this series BJ Harvey knocked it out of the park with her signature humor and all the banter, wit and charm between the Cooks and Bakers I have come to love. Gilly is amazing. I loved her strength and confidence. She knows what she wants and goes after it. She is strong and I loved the way she stood up to her parents. Gilly is also Ronnie’s sister (from Work Violation). I loved catching up with her and Jax and their family and all the crazy antics that comes along with them. Ezra and Gilly have incredible chemistry. They embark on a purely sexual relationship initially until a surprise pregnancy has them slowing things down and questioning whether or not they could have more with each other. Ezra is charming, sweet and funny and really knew how to step it up and bring the romance to their relationship. Everything about these characters fit so perfectly and the ending was the best especially the epilogue. BJ Harvey has written an incredible series with these Cook Brothers and she has become a new favourite for light, sweet and steamy rom-coms. I cannot wait to read more of her work in the future.
ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.
Oh man, I think this might just be my favourite book in this series. Ez, oh Ez. He's just so damned adorable and sweet and supportive, and *sigh*
I loved going on this journey with Ez and Gilly, and experiencing them getting to know each other even further, and love the little baby on the way. They're perfect mix of fun and supportive and sweet and sexy, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
I loved how we got all our fave characters from the previous books, with all their quirky and hilarious qualities as well.
Loved this one, a great end to the series, and would love to see more of the whole gang in the future.
Harvey has outdone herself with this story! I’m obsessed with this series and each one gets better and better.
Harvey is a master at creating rich, deep, character driven stories. She doesn’t need to drown us in over the top obstacles and drama, her stories are much more organic and allow her incredible cast of characters to shine. It makes it easy to forget you’re reading a story, you feel like you’re a part of it all. This story just flowed so perfectly, blending humor, romance, and a certain authenticity that I loved. Ezra and Gilly were everything I hoped for.
Ezra is the man I have been waiting for. And his and Gilly's story is all I could have hoped for.
This is the final book in the series, and even though it could be read as a standalone, you will miss a lot of the nuances of relationships of you don't read the previous books.
Ezra and Gilly's book begins with a bang and definitely does not go out with a whimper!
I knew that they would be amazing together, it was just a case of how their story would unfold.
Ez is definitely made of boyfriend material. I love the way he is all in, all the time. He has his woman's back, would do anything for his family. He had me cheering big time.
One thing though - and I am sure this is just a me thing and won't bother anyone else - I got annoyed with Ezra calling Gilly "baby mama" all the time. I could understand sometimes, but it was nearly every time he talked to her. It made me grind me teeth by the end of things - but again. this is just a me thing.
I think this was the perfect ending to this series - though I wouldn't say not to some novellas down the track.
5 star Review Working For It (Cook Brothers #5) by B.J. Harvey Have you ever been excited to start a book, but dreaded it at the same time? This was the position I found myself in with Working For It. I have come to love the men and women of Cook County and knowing that Ezra Baker and Gilly Nelson’s story was to be the last in the series, well frankly I didn’t want to start it because I knew there wouldn’t be anymore in this series. I have been intrigued with Ezra since he was first introduced in the series and have been looking forward to seeing what Ms. Harvey had in store for him and I was not disappointed. There was nothing I didn’t love about this story and I loved that we got an “ending” to all the couples. Work For It is a laugh out loud romantic comedy with lots of heart and family who love and support one another and those they love. This is one of my favourite feel good series over the past 12 months and I am sad to know that this is the last book. Congratulations Ms. Harvey on an exceptional series which I have loved.
I'm absolutely head over heels in love with Ezra and Gilly! After getting a peak at their story in the previous book I was excited to see how it would play out and their story ended up my favorite of the series! I've enjoyed every couple's story but Ezra and Gilly's was sweet, sexy and so damn swoon-worthy I devoured every page quicker than the next because I NEEDED to see them get their "Happily Ever After" with everything life has thrown at them, from family to ex-wives! This is definitely one Cook Brothers series that is a Top Read for me!
Funny, witty, and sexy - a perfect combination! BJ Harvey reminds me yet again how much she excels at writing rom-coms, and I cannot recommend this one highly enough.
When Gilly and Ezra hookup and continue to hookup, those hookups have an unintended consequence. But it's a great thing because it brings these two together and forces her to take stock in what's really important in life.
I loved this couple! They're so cute together as they navigate their new situation and fall in love even though neither was expecting it. And I LOVE Ezra! Sweet, sexy and swoony af. I'm gonna miss this series but this one is the best way to end it - with my favorite story and my favorite couple of this already awesome series.
ARC via Enticing Journey Book Promotions for an honest review.
This book felt really, really long. There’s a lot of flippant jokey dialogue between all the paired off characters that didn’t really have much purpose and in the end I skimmed a lot of it. This is also part of a series and having not read any of the other books meant the supporting characters all just blurred together as carbon copies of each other all with weird nicknames. Plus all these couples are also pregnant so this book felt like it was more about pregnancy and giving birth rather than the H/h which just didn’t interest me. I couldn’t get into it so abandoned it at 56%
This book is part of a series. I had not read any other books in this series, and as a result, the other characters, who play a major role in this series, where unknown and annoying to me. Good romance, but too many players in the storyline
If you want to read a book about a bunch of people bitching about pregnancy and children, read this. Yawn. This book was so bad, I want to go back and take away stars from the previous books for leading me to this.
I have been looking forward to Gilly and Ezra’s story since I met Ezra in the first book. I was even more excited to read this book after reading Book 4…. Hard Work, where this story is set up. I wanted to see how their story would play out. I was completely satisfied with how the story played how!!! Ezra is still my favorite Hero in this series!!!
BJ Harvey has given us another funny, sexy and a feel good story between two friends who decide to tempt fate….until they get the shock of their lives.
I know I have said this before, but I believe BJ Harvey is the Queen of romantic comedies. She knows how to give us light hearted storylines and characters you can’t help but fall in love with. Working for It was no different!!
This is the 5th and final book in the Cook Brother’s series by BJ Harvey. I have to say this was probably my favorite of the series and that is because I am completely in love with Ezra. That man just melted my heart. This is a friends to lovers with a surprise baby romance. I thought the flow and pace of the story worked well. This was an easy read without a lot of drama. Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon!! This is told in Dual POV.
In this book we follow Ezra and Gilly. Ezra is an honorary Cook Brother, having grown up with all the siblings. Gilly is the sister of Ronnie, who we meet in Work Violation. Gilly and Ezra are friends through all the Cook brothers and their significant others. So when they are in Vegas for a gathering, they decide to co-mingle….intimately ;) What they don’t expect is that 8 months later, after having a friends with benefits type fling, Gilly has a bun in the oven. Can Ezra get Gilly to give him a serious chance to be a family?? Will Ezra step up to the plate and be the man and dad Gilly wants him to be?? Read this book to find out.
I thought this was the perfect finish for all these characters. I thought BJ Harvey wrapped up everybody’s story perfectly. I do wish we would’ve seen more of Axel….because I just loved that little boy, but we do still get some precious moments with him in this story.
BJ Harvey is and will always be one of my All Time Favorite authors. I will read anything she writes. Her stories always captivate me and are truly entertaining reads. Her’s are books I know I will read over and over again. If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading her books yet, what are you waiting for?? Pick up the Cook Brothers Series and then sit back and enjoy the journey that her books take you on. You won’t be sorry!!!!
I adore everything about this series and I'm so sad to see it end!! Thankfully BJ Harvey heads off the tears by guaranteeing more coming in an adjacent series (where I'm praying the characters will overlap!)
Ezra had my heart ages ago. Twice divorced and the butt of many of the jokes of his beloved, adopted brothers, the Cooks. This wonderfully funny and smart guy has an enormous heart and despite being a two time loser in love, in life he's all the things the ladies love (especially me!)
Gilly is a fierce lady of the law and sister to our beloved Ronnie. Hooking up with Ezra during their Vegas weekend was the best gamble she's taken in a long while. It resulted in a very hot, mutually satisfying recurring "bang buddy" situation for the past several months... but despite the advertisements, what happened in Vegas did NOT stay in Vegas.
Gah, Ezra and Gilly were dynamite together!! Irreverent, funny, and incredibly heartfelt as "baby daddy/baby mama". I also loved catching up with all the Cooks from previous books. This family (biological, marital and adopted) are flipping fantastic! It's a family I'd love to get a beer (or 5) with!!
The last book in the Cook Brothers Series and yes I was sad to see this series come to an end but what a way to finish the series, Working For It finished this series off with a bang and Ms Harvey certainly left the best for last. This is Ezra Baker and Gilly Nelson’s story and their story is one that captivated me from the first page to the last line and I really didn’t want it to end. There is nothing bad to be said about this book it’s everything you could want in a great read, it’s got all the feels and all the emotions as well as adorable characters. Work For It will make you laugh, it will make you smile as you read one of the best romantic comedies of 2020 and let’s be honest with everything going on in the world a book with great feel good factors is just what we need. For me what you turned this book from a great read to an excellent read was the HEA’s we got for every couple featured in this this series and for me this was a perfect book to close the series on. I will be reading this series again and again because it’s become one of my favourite series and I highly recommend it to all romance lovers
Another brilliant book about this fantastic extended family. The Cooks and Baker boys are just amazing. And all the bold women that they encounter and fall in love with, making these stories, beautiful, entertaining and completely romantic.
Ezra and Gilly's start began unbeknownst to us all in a previous book. And that's how this Vegas hook up turned to a surprise baby. This is a story of a "hook up" turning into one of the most romantic stories I have read.
All though Ezra isn't new to love, he's been married twice before but for me, he has never experienced real love. Not like the love he finds with Gilly and ditto on that for Gilly too. We all know that her life growing up was the same as Ronnie's and they weren't exactly loved by their family. So this was something lovely and surprising.
I know people won't like that there isn't any drama involved. I really think that's what Ezra and Gilly needed. They needed calm and just peace really. I totally love and recommend this book and series. For me it's just what this series needed. A whole lot of calm and happiness.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, secrets, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first Work in Progress (Cook Brothers #1) Work Violation (Cook Brothers, #2) Working Back (Cook Brothers #3) Hard Work (Cook Brothers, #4)
This is Gilly and Ezra’s story. They had something good going with them both until two words were spoken “I’m pregnant”. Now things are a little crazy and they both have a different opinion of what they need to do about the situation. They both want the baby but how is the future going to look when they can’t agree on how exactly to move forward. These two will have to learn to compromise and work together for a future together. But is that even going to help when hormones and renovations are thrown into the mix? Do they have a future that keeps them together?
I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
Working For It is the fifth and final title in the Cook Brother series, featuring honorary brother Ezrah Baker.
Ezrah has the worst luck with women, with two failed marriages to prove it, but he's incredibly sweet supportive loyal and a family man at heart. When he loves it's fiercely and with his whole heart.
Gilly is independent and self reliant, she doesn't form lasting attachments to anyone but her sister Ronnie. She's strong and resilient and hard working, and peruses her goals with a vengeance.
Ezrah and Gilly's story is sweet and sexy, the banter is witty, fun and full of innuendoes. It's an easy read with minimal drama and i was captivated from the very first chapter.
I loved catching up with the Cook brothers and it was a wonderful, if bittersweet ending to the series.
After being divorced twice Ezra is very cautious when it comes to his relationships with women while Gilly has been focused on her career rather than love and relationship. They share some family ties and while in Vegas the chemistry between them ignites but doesn’t end when they return home.
Their casual relationship is about to be turned upside down when two is about to become three. The decision has been taken from their hands and they must decide if they are destined to be a family or the best co-parents they can be.
There was no denying the chemistry between them but seeing how they were able to open their hearts and lives to each other when fate threw them a curveball was fun to watch. As a bonus we get to catch up with the other characters we know and love from this series.
Ezra Baker be still my beating heart! The man sure knows how to make you swoon and sigh and make all your fictional boyfriend dreams come true! He has the biggest heart and soul! Gilly is one incredibly lucky woman! She also gives as good as she gets but then the overwhelming emotions with everything, Ezra has her back big time and its truly amazing to see! Gah this story had me smiling so big and the witty banter and steamy innuendos were off the charts entertaining! I wholeheartedly loved everything about Working for It! The sense of family and their unwavering support and friendships just made me want to be a part of it all or adopt me in some way! And the ending just made my heart feel so happy! This book is truly a masterpiece of love and family! Highly recommend it!
Gotta love this series, and the books just keep entertaining with witty banter all the boys and their wives back again is nothing but chaos and fun! Ezra and Gilly are an amazing couple... Ezra the brother from another mother will make you SWOON! Baby daddy is all about making Gilly see he is more than just his two ex wives, he's caring, considerate, romantic and everything Gilly needs but she never really took the time to notice that he was what she wanted. GAH this was such a fun, fabulous look into the world of the Cook brothers and their families, their lives, loves and lots of babies and baby mamma drama... never a dull moment with this group! Strap in and enjoy the ride, you won't be disappointed.
Ezra Baker has been married and divorced twice, and is just looking for a good time. In walks Gilly Nelson, she too is looking for no strings, fun between the sheets. They have known each other for a while, as Gilly’s younger sister is married to one of the Cook brothers, Ezra’s business partners. Eight months into their “friends with benefits” Gilly tells Ez she is pregnant. He stupidly proposes marriage, which just pisses her off! Now he must spend the next seven months making Gilly realize they are meant to create this beautiful family together. This book was laugh out loud funny, with the entire cast of characters from all four books getting to say their piece. It was lovingly written with this couples future in mind and it was so sexy and steamy, I think it melted my Kindle!! I am sad to see this series end, but I am so excited for Skye’s brothers to find their happy ever after next! Check out anything written by BJ Harvey, she keeps you on your toes and you laugh your A$$ off! Enjoy!
I really think BJ saved the best for last with these guys. Amazing characters, great dialogue, with just enough drama to make it good. Plus, a beautiful love story between 2 people who were not looking for love.
I'm sure it could be read as a stand-alone but.....................it's so much better having read the series in order because all characters from the previous 4 books are in this one. Whichever, I highly recommend this series/book or anything else that this author writes. She will not disappoint you.
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title. (Goodfm)
So the last of the young boys, who are now men, to fall is caught by a contraceptive malfunction. The smart lawyer and clever architect have been having a covert affair since Vagas. However, the situation is outed when a hormonal and flustered mum to be, outs them at a baby shower for her sister. It could be worse, and although the father to be, does initially make a hashup of things, with a little thought and a lot of effort, they learn that there is more to their relationship than just mind blowing sex.
Ezra and Gilly were super cute together! The pregnancy changed their relationship in a big way, but they handled it so well and stuck together. They challenged each other in fun ways and everyone around them could see they were meant to be. The story was a bit repetitive in terms of conversations and there was a lot of waiting around for something to happen between these two. Still a good read though.
