Sound direction on preaching. Alexander encourages preachers to meditate on the content of the text before rushing straight to commentaries. It’s very easy for me to run straight to the commentaries; I needed to hear this reminder. He also encouraged a preaching-style that enables “people to study the Scripture for themselves,” as opposed to a preacher who is so much more gifted than everyone else in the room that it leaves people feeling like they could never really read the Bible on their own. I love his simple advice that “each sermon, even when you are preaching through a series, must be an entity in itself.” Strongly agree with that. Love that he concludes by stressing the necessity of applying the Word to ourselves when we preach.
As part of the Basics of the Reformed Faith series, Alexander contributes this booklet on preaching. It is helpful in its brief attempt to explain what preaching is, what it is supposed to do, and how we should respond to it. Noting that the true work of preaching can only be accomplished by the Holy Spirit, Alexander quickly points out that this must not encourage laziness by those who speak nor idleness from those who listen.
This is a solid introduction to preaching- what & why it's so important in the life of every believer. Alexander does a great job simply summarizing what Christians should look for, long for, and pray for from the preaching they sit under.
Great little intro to what Biblical Preaching ought to be. One you can readily hand out to those who want to know about what they don't know they're missing.
