The Counseling Experience: A Theoretical and Practical Approach

Rate this book
In a practical, down-to-earth manner, this book effectively covers three dimensions in counseling: basic behavioral dynamics that are particularly relevant to counseling; an eclectic theoretical underpinning that accommodates many theories of counseling; and practical approaches that flow from a combination of the first two dimensions. The book is unique in a number of ways. It not only presents the principles of effective counseling but also discusses in depth why the principles are important, what effects they have on the counseling relationships, and what happens to both the person in counseling and the counselor when the principles are not followed. Material is presented realistically. The book discusses in detail not only the potential good of counseling but also its potential harm. It treats counselors as human beings who have limitations and weaknesses that need to be recognized if counselors are to evolve continually into more effective helpers. A perfect resource volume to help beginning practitioners face the daily challenges, confusions, problems, successes, and failures that arise when human beings try to help each other.

Another fantastic book for new counselors. Really a step-by-step guide on how to deal with serious issues all counselors will face, from suicide in children as young as 4, to resistance and coping mechanisms. Also goes through the stages of counseling, which is nice. Great book.

I really enjoyed this book as part of an applied counseling class. It broke the stages of counseling into clear steps and was a great guide. There were insites and tools that were valuable throughout the book.
