The Inner Chapel: Embracing the Promises of God

Rate this book
2021 Illumination Book Awards, Gold Spirituality

What is the “inner chapel”? The place within where God meets us. We can trust God—and we can trust in God’s promises to us,
But how do we experience all that God has given us? By going to the inner chapel, that sacred place within each person where God waits to love us unconditionally. There, God gives us all we need to find our way to a life of hope instead of despair, peace instead of continued restlessness, and joy instead of anxiety.

Becky Eldredge offers readers down-to-earth stories, prayer experiences to try, and enthusiastic encouragement for spiritual growth and a deeper friendship with God.  The Inner Chapel  will inspire individuals but also provide excellent material for small groups and people going on retreat.

It’s nice to meet you! I am passionate about Ignatian spirituality and teaching people how to pray; how to make room for God in the busyness. I work hard to practice what I preach — sharing the wisdom that people taught me– on how to pray and how to use the tools of Ignatian spirituality as a lay person.

Despite the journey it took for me to believe God calls for me, accompanying people deeper in their faith lives is at the heart of my call, whether its walking with someone in Spiritual direction or through writing or in person on a retreat. This is the work of my life for the last twenty plus years, and I cannot see stopping it anytime soon. I am looking forward to accompanying you!

Stick around for just a while and you’ll find out real quick how deep my Louisiana roots run! My faith is influenced tremendously by the Catholic community of South Louisiana that continues to broaden my understanding that being Catholic is a lot more than just showing up to mass on Sunday. It is also about getting outside and seeing God in nature, about hospitality, about sharing meals together, and about supporting your community around you, especially when bad weather is upon us. It is why on any given day there is a good chance you’ll find more than just our family members in our home.

You’ll learn, too, of my deep love for my hubby, Chris, and children, Brady, Abby and Mary. I guarantee you’ll probably hear a story or two from our sixteen years of marriage and the adventures of our lives as a family! Honestly, there is truly no greater joy than sharing life with these four amazing human beings
.
My favorite thing to do is sit in deep conversation with another person listening to each other tell the stories of our lives, exploring the deeper questions , and learning more about ourselves, each other, and God in the process. My hope is that we can do that one day together too- whether it be through meeting each other on a retreat or through my writing.

This was my first reading of this book. I will read it again soon after my wife has a chance to read. I look forward to slowly reflecting on the suggested Scripture passages and allowing myself to enter my own Inner Chapel.

This book is a self-guided spiritual retreat in and of itself--really, it's like an intimate retreat for one! And it's one you can read over and over again at various points in your life and get something different out of it every time. What a beautiful and continuous gift this book is!
No matter where you are in your spiritual life, the author's words and writing style gently coax you into digging deeper. Like a comforting friend, Becky Eldredge takes your hand and slowly walks with you on the path to find your own Inner Chapel where God resides and has always been. Becky does this through genuine and heartfelt testimony and stories, which allows the reader to get to know and trust her. In one of the chapters, I loved how she was able to genuinely convey her own doubts and how she fell victim to others' hurtful or thoughtless comments. She then identified that God wanted to free her--us too--from the prison we can be put in by the words of others or by feelings we have in response. How powerful is that? And that is just one small example from this jewel of a book!
Before you know it, you realize that Becky has intricately guided you into a deeper spirituality--your own Inner Chapel and you are better for it.

Becky Eldridge has a gentle way of making the spiritual life look easy. In this newest book she brings her own personal experiences. She is very transparent in sharing her life, her joys and sorrows to demonstrate her points. At the end of each chapter are very concrete exercises in which the reader can practice to apply what she discusses in the chapter. She bases this book on Ignatian Spirituality and explains in simple language even a beginner will understand. This book is user friendly and comes at a time when we are all self-isolating. This book allows the reader to get in touch with their God, His promises and His unconditional love for them. In Chapter 14 she brings to life, just as Jesus had companions in his suffering, so do we. This chapter fits well with our current times as well as Holy Week. This book is not just to be read, but savored and prayed over. There is no rush to complete it. If something moves you as Ignatius would say, stick with up, and allow it to permeate your inner being.

The Inner Chapel can be done anywhere and at any time. It calls us all to pause to re-center ourselves and get back in touch with our Center.

This is a book to pray with and to enjoy. It's a story of family and a guide for prayer in the 21st century. Author Becky Eldredge encourages the reader to see the possibility of quality prayer time in the the busyness of daily life. Eldredge is approachable, honest, often humorous, and down-to-earth. I began to read the book as I would read any book, relaxing with it, just reading. By chapter 4, I realized that I was being called to prayer. So I took the book to my prayer space where I have my bible, my candle, and my sacred things, and I started the book again from page 1, reading just one chapter every few days and praying the "Let's Go To The Inner Chapel" page at the end of each chapter. It has been a wonderful guide for deepening my prayer time.

I suggest that you take your time with Inner Chapel. Savor the promises that Eldredge so lovingly outlines for us. Let God guide you to the verses that are meant for you to pray. Eldredge has a gift for making prayer possible in this hectic generation.

As a young adult, I have been working on forming my own spirituality and faith. One of the most frequent questions I hear among my friends and one I have I asked is how do I pray.
And let me say this book has been such a great tool in this journey. It reviews Ignatian spiritual practices with opportunities to put them into practice in each chapter but what takes it a step further is that it is not just a how-to book.
This book really is in an invitation to walk with the Author Becky Eldredge in this journey into the Inner Chapel, always working to get closer to God. Through this book, you feel like you are walking with a spiritual mentor as she shares her personal stories guiding you through practices she has learned and incorporated in her life
Definitely invite anyone who wants to try new ways to start or continue to build their prayer life to check it out!

A book for someone at any stage in their faith journey... This is not so much a book about Ignatian Spirituality but more a book about God's love for all of us, and how to draw closer to Him in our inner chapel (a space where God resides inside of me) using Ignatian Spirituality principles. It is easy to read and relatable - many times while reading I said to myself 'that's me.' Becky gave a 'name' to something that I had experienced in my life (i.e. rest for the weary) and affirmed God's presence for me in that moment. This book is a great guide to being in relationship with God in my daily life and at the end of each chapter there are Scripture passages, prayer meditations, and reflection questions. It will be one book I will be able to go back to again and again.

I have enjoyed reading and praying with The Inner Chapel. Here are some of the highlights for me. Most of us know that God is with us, but in times like these it’s so easy to forget many promises from the living word. It’s easy to get caught up in the world. Becky does a fantastic job of reminding us that we can, at any time, retreat to our “Inner Chapel” to a place of solitude where God reminds us of his unconditional love for us. Each chapter has spiritual exercises that urge us to go in to our Inner Chapel where Becky leads us through prayer, encourages us with scripture, and helps remind each reader how to embrace the promises of God.

This is a good introduction to Ignatian spirituality and the "examen" for those not already familiar with it. My book group was, so much of it was not new to us, but we still liked it's more personal approach and that it was from the perspective of a woman, and a younger one at that. Throughout there is narrative thread having to do with coming to terms with a family member's death which is something we all face at one time or another. We did, wish more of the information about the author's own path had been given earlier in the book.

Becky’s sharing of her own personal encounters with the Lord in her Inner Chapel are inspiring and encouraging. Her honest struggles and success in her own spiritual life allows the read to relate without judgement. By the books end it feels as though you’ve been sitting with an old friend who has encouraged and enlightened you to God’s voice.

The Inner Chapel was more than a book. It was a prayer journey full of spiritual practices that brought me closer to God. As a Spiritual Director, I often use this book with my direectees. It is full of Ignatian-inspired exercises and guides that promote a deeper relationship with God. Becky dives deeply into the spiritual journey with this book.

Becky gently shares the Ignatian gift of prayer through storytelling. She guides the reader through the movements of prayer as she reflects on the loss of her grandfather. It’s a beautiful memoir of life’s ups and downs and how God’s presence never leaves us. She reminds us to slow down and enter the deep parts of our soul and find Jesus lovingly meeting us there, even in our saddest moments.

We each have our own inner chapel. Becky Eldredge directs us toward God waiting in our inner chapel to share God’s promises with us. The inner chapel is a place you will want to visit regularly.

There was a lot of repetition in this book, but it also led me into wanting to study Ignatius Spirituality!

Congratulations to Becky Eldredge as her latest book is born into the world.

If you're looking for a warm, welcoming introduction to classic Ignatian spiritual practices, this is the book for you. This is the type of book you savor and keep on your shelf to refer to again and again.

Becky is primarily writing to Catholics which gave the book an "insider" feeling from time to time. Don't let this discourage you though if you're not Catholic. All Christians will benefit from these timeless practices.

What I most appreciate about the book is the way Becky ties the practices to scripture and the story of her own life. Her vulnerability and authenticity shine.
