This is a fascinating book about how Francis Drake stated with nothing and became one of the most popular men of his age. He also was the first English ship to sail around the southern tip of South America and from there circumnavigate the world. He challenged the then most powerful nation in the world, Spain, and in most instances won. He also beat the Spanish Armada which was the beginning of the end for the Spanish nation.

Though originally published in 1965, this bio could have been written 100 years earlier. This is an old-fashioned history, a swash-buckling adventure, overly fond of its subject and credulous of the sources - and with an unfortunate dash of racism and some unnecessary anti-catholic bigotry.

Ernle Bradford had a rare gift for novelizing history, and in Francis Drake he found the perfect subject for his talents.
