Tania is pursued by the evil ruler Ascanet for a star sapphire ring, as well as by a mounted army of Silver Souls and a group of vicious hippogriffs. "The story is classic fantasy and romance told in a refined tone that will appeal to subtle tastes. The lean but hypervisual narrative feeds the reader's imagination while the dialogue effortlessly imparts deep philosophy." - ...more

First off, let me say that this book has truly stayed with me throughout the years. It's one of those books that I read when I was just getting into reading, and there are so many things that are in this book that I've never found expressed quite so simply that inspired my young mind to remember them, all these years later. Nevertheless, for all its clear standing as a fantasy novel, and for the interweaving of many delightful romantic elements throughout it, this book is not that great or outst ...more

I don't remember how I got a copy of this book, but when I was in middle school I think I read it 4 or 5 times. While perusing through my bookshelves at home, I came across it again and wondered why the book had been so compelling to naturally I had to read it again to find out. I was still surprised to discover that I still absolutely love this book. It's slightly Lord of the Rings-ish in some ways, with some religious undertones (whether they were meant to be there or not), but with en ...more

Upon a long-delayed re-reading, the book improved to 5 stars. It's one of the most enchanting YA fantasies I've ever read, and one of the few that's actually anti-war. Would I necessarily want to live in an innocent island utopia? Probably not, but I sure enjoyed reading as the philosophical issues of innocence and corruption played out in the novel.
Tania is a sympathetic heroine and Eliar, well, is pretty wonderful. I love that their first interaction is a debate of equals (Tania debates a lot

I originally picked up this book from my local library in middle school. And then picked it up again. And again. And again. A few years ago, I decided that I needed my own copy and bought it online.

A few weeks ago, I was looking for something light to reread and I picked up The Island and the Ring. I was afraid to reread it; I've become more critical of books as I've gotten older, especially fantasy and romance. What if I didn't love it as much? What if it felt lacking or had something in it tha

The story. itself, isn't too special. Very classic story of the person no one suspects being the one to try and defeat the great evil in the world. I liked the strong classic heroine they had; and the romance was a nice spice, not overly overt, but with a good presence that flows well with the story.
I’m never too fond when magic isn’t explained or given some kind of description in how it goes, but left to mysticism. In this book… the author does a little bit of both; and it was enough in the bac

I'm a little torn on this one. I loved, LOVED this book when I was eleven. My eleven-year-old self gives it 5 stars. Recently, in a bout of nostalgia, I borrowed a copy from interlibrary loan. (The book was so old/disused it had been purged from my local library's collection.) It was...not as great as I remembered it. In fact, I found the characters boring and cliche, the writing not so sparkling. It was so frustrating that it did not match the great memories I had of reading (and re-reading) th ...more

Loved this book the first time. Couldn't put it down. Was obsessed with the story and the characters. I reread it this past year, after about a three year period, and it was a little slower pace than I remembered and I had to fight a little harder to stay interested BUT overall a must read for any fantasy lit lover.

i love this book... i have re-read it dozens of times in the 22 years since I discovered it. it is fantastical, romantic, adventurous... all while teaching valuable life lessons... & it manages to accomplish it all without the cheese or camp that comparable novels can so easily fall prey to... a must read on a cold, snowy night by the fire

I'm sure I did read this one a long time ago, despite all the protesting I did earlier! Definitely one of the better fantasies, right in line with the Robin McKinleys I've been reading.
