Fifteen years ago, five ordinary teenagers were singled out by a prophecy to take down an impossibly powerful entity wreaking havoc across North America. He was known as the Dark One, and his weapon of choice - catastrophic events known as Drains - leveled cities and claimed thousands of lives. UPDATE: I am getting an ARC!

Not really sure what authors making it big with YA books before switching to the more prestigious genre of adult fiction says about how authors view the YA genre...

Wow, people are getting really mad about this "review." Do they honestly not think that the YA bracket is often dismissed by critics? Only romance receives worse treatment.

After the train wreck Allegiant and skipping Carve the Mark this better be good, I still have faith in Veronica Roth because Divergent (and only book one) was so good

"Sometimes Sloan wondered if the world had been worth saving."

2.5 stars Sloan's character really was the redeeming factor for this novel. She was coated in an assortment of layers and I was never exactly sure what she would do next.

The storyline progressed like a herd of turtles. Once one thing was over the group of Chosen Ones would move on to something else while meandering about their day to day business. I wasn't exactly sure the direction the story was going until over halfway through

She was by the river, the cold air burning her lungs, as she stared across the bridge at the Dark One right before their last battle. Part of her always would be.

2 1/2 stars. I realized somewhere in the last seventy or so pages of Chosen Ones that I could very easily turn this into a positive review. Threads were coming together, showcasing Roth's clever plotting, just as the action picked up and secrets came to light. There's sprinkles of humour:

    WHAAAAAT!?
WHY didn't I know of THIS!?
After Carve the Mark Roth been one of my favourite authors; I know many people didn't like it, but I really enjoyed it. though I feel the Divergent vibes over this than a space sci-fi, I must wait & see. (I liked Divergent too.)
I hope this book doesn't let me down. *finger crossed*

P.s. I really don't like cover... even though it is the shade of blue I love, but it's so simple :(

"Nobody ever prepared me for what came after. They just assumed I would never find out."

The Chosen Ones is Veronica Roths first novel that targets an adult audience, as it digs deep into themes that her Divergent series of novels casually explored. It is a Chicago-based urban portal fantasy novel, with a neat twist on the chosen ones versus the Dark One trope. The story begins ten years after a group of five teenagers defeated the murdering and destructive Dark One. For better or for worse (its

I'm going to start by saying I like the Chosen One trope. I do. And I also really like the post-Chosen-One-now-what-the-fuck-happens trope. I find the former is done a lot better than the latter (though we haven't had that many) but this might've been the best post-Chosen story I've read so far. I think.

I definitely think this is going to be book that either works or doesn't work for readers. The characters aren't easy to love (or like) and the plot shifts gears -- sideways, upside down,

I'm sad to say that I haven't been as disappointed in Veronica Roth's book since Allegiant. I'm actually one the people who really enjoyed the Carve the Mark duology which had its issues but had some awesome mature characters and interesting relationships. Compared to that series, Chosen Ones felt like a step back both for the writing and the characters. This supposedly adult

This book is about 5 people who were considered to be "chosen ones" according to a prophecy and destined to destroy "The Dark One" and they did it: they defeated this big villain who was destroying the world and killing people. However, ten years later, one of them dies and they discover that their world is not as safe as they thought.

Well, my loyal Pinecones, the time has come for me to review another Veronica Roth book, one which I was lucky to read as an ARC this time. And unlike her last series, Carve the Mark and The Fates Divide, I am very happy to say that I was not at all disappointed. Though it's not quite at the high-water mark the Divergent series left for me, the platinum standard that made Roth one of my all-time faves, it's a damn sight better than that half-baked duology she tried to come back with a few years ...more

I know I said that I would never read another Veronica Roth book after the dumpster fire that was Allegiant.

And then I read Carve the Mark. And it wasn't Allegiant-bad, but it wasn't great. So I said I would never read another Veronica Roth book again again.

But then I read Ark, which was an Amazon short story and adult fiction and hey, I actually enjoyed it.

So I'm gonna give this one a go since it's adult fiction and maybe that's the genre Roth will shine in.

But if this one isn't good then I'M

Thank you to Hodder Books for gifting an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was a "life after being the chosen one" story, that involves a group of 'potential' chosen ones who battled a big bad guy and what comes after the success of winning. It covers very current topics including PTSD, anxiety, depression, alcohol and drug abuse in a genuine, human and real way alongside a plot that is thick with twists, turns and unexpected outcomes. I really enjoyed the premise of this but sometimes the pacing was slow. It was a pretty complex tale and I don't quite see where the series will go but I am here for it.

This is not a book for everyone, but it definitely is a good book.

The thing that really bumps this book up is that is not set during the main event described in the book, but ten years later: we are able to see the consequences of the defeat of the Dark One by the chosen ones. And I think this was a really good choice, given the amount of clichés that could come writing about a big battle in which only a few can actually keep up.

I was confused in the beginning, I could not really understand

So, not a YA book, but definitely read like one to me. The premise was great, the execution was only okay. Which was, sadly, what I expected.

There were spots in this that felt awkward and clunky and couldve benefitted by being cut back a bit, and I sometimes felt like the naming of Chicago buildings and landmarks became irritating. I really didnt need to know the names of every other building or bridge the main character walked past to understand the setting was in Chicago.

I was so excited to get my hands on this, and I promised myself I wouldn't read any 2020 books until January, so this was basically one of the first things I tore into now that it's the new year. And I read almost the entire book in one sitting! I'll have a full review closer to release, but it both was and wasn't what I was expecting.
