In 1946, hell is breaking loose in Jade City, Texas, and when 15-year-old Bobby Graywood’s Affliction reveals a terrifying secret about the new pastor, he finds himself pitted against absolute evil in a fight to save the people he loves. Hellbender, a Southern Gothic, coming-of-age novel, follows Bobby through the summer of 1946 as small-town politics, minor league baseball, and a series of horrific events bring together a unique cast, including Newton Hellbender, the ominous new preacher, and his weasely sidekick, Randall Goode. With the help of Jubal Moss, an outcast Cajun ballplayer just returned from World War II, can Bobby embrace his Affliction and prevent the destruction of all he holds dear? “The horror is fantastic, with Craven skilled enough to peel away the layers with particularly well-done pacing and… a narrative laden with dark humor.” –Readers’ Favorite (5-star review).
It's 1946 in Jade City, Bobby is a ball boy for the Green Sox's and loves his job, its a New Year so fresh try outs which brings in lots of soldiers from the War.
Bobby has a secret which he has to suffer with on his own, his mum knows and so does Cap the coach of the baseball team but nobody else, so Bobby is classed as slightly odd as he grows up because he always wears gloves, he cannot touch anyone's skin or he will see the very worst of that person (so not something you want to deal with everyday).
There is a new preacher / pastor in town and Bobby really doesn't like him he gets terrible vibes from him and sees unforgivable visions about Pastor Hellbender.
Is there anyone he can trust to tell or does he keep it to himself???
This story has a smart and clever storyline with lots of interesting characters that keep you interested in the story, well worth a read!!!!
