Relive the legendary 1970 Joe Cocker Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour and the 2015 tribute concert at the Lockn' Festival with Tedeschi Trucks Band, both of which were captured by the lens of tour photographer Linda Wolf.
Cocker Power features exclusive, never-before-seen documentary photos, stories, and vignettes from both the Joe Cocker Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour, which has been called one of the greatest rock-and-roll tours of all time, and the 2015 tribute concert at the Lockn’ Festival with Tedeschi Trucks Band and the original tour alumni. This visually stunning volume includes contributions from over one hundred musicians and crew members, including Leon Russell, Chris Stainton, Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, Derek Trucks, and many more. A true labor of love to all who played a part in these exceptional times in the history of music and culture, and to everyone, collectively, who played their part in making it all happen, Cocker Power is a must-have for devoted fans and newcomers alike.
A huge book, mostly photos taken by the author, a world class photographer who, among her many accomplishments, toured with Joe Cocker, Leon Russell and the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour of 1970. Great storti, outstanding images.
Staggering great photo/commentary coffee table book about the Mad Dogs and Englishman tour that revolves around Leon Russell's amazing leadership and Joe Cocker's undeniable charisma and voice. The author/photographer was part of the tour, lived every minute, and her notes and the notes cribbed from others paint an extraordinarily insider take on that legendary entourage of a tour. She finishes the book by participating, along with Leon, in a tribute concert of the songs from that tour performed by the staggeringly talented Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi band.
As a Tulsa native, I am a born and bred Leon Russell and The Tulsa Sound fanatic. The photos here remind me of my youth and the music that made me whole.
Special thanks to my friend and fellow Leon fan, Phill May, for this gift.
What a fantastic compilation of narrative, quotes, and never-before-seen photos of both the seminal 1970 Joe Cocker/Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour and the Tedeschi Trucks Bands’ 2015 Lockn’ Festival Tribute concert. For me, it doesn’t get much better than this blues/roots/soul/rock based music, headed by oneof the best white blues/rock singers of all time and the inimitable Master of Time and Space: Leon Russell!
Massive credit to Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi for gathering the remaining alumni of the Mad Dogs tour including Leon, 1 year before he passed, and adding others such as Chris Robinson (Black Crowes), Dave Mason, Warren Haynes (ABB and Gov't Mule) and the fabulous Tedeschi Trucks Band.
Author/photographer Linda Wolf, a participant of both events, did an excellent job on the layout and organization of this coffee table book. I highly recommend the original film of Mad Dogs for a snapshot of a wild and chaotic hippie rock tour circa 1970, and I can't wait to see the film of the 2015 concert!
OK, this is my first coffee table photography books... which will be available in bookstores april 28th. But, this is a 5 star book -- not just because the photos are iconic, but design is extraordinary -- the Designer is Michael Vanderbyl. Insight Edition, publisher and Simon & Schuster are distributing. The quotes and stories from Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi and over 100 of the alumni and musicians in each band, plus tech staff, families, friends are so generous. Be sure to get a copy. it's available in advance from globaluprisingbook.com
Mad Dogs & Englishmen was the first of its kind; a mega tour which would not only give rise to a major motion picture, but now, thanks to photographer Linda Wolf, a volume which adds stunning images and first-hand accounts to the legacy of this ambitious undertaking. I felt as if I myself had accompanied Joe and Leon on this tour, and taken part in the tribute concert which followed after Joe’s passing. I recommend it to anyone interested in hippie culture, the music scene of the early 70s, and the dynamic duo of Cocker and Russell and the spectacular musicians they took with them on the road.
Absolutely loved everything about this book, a pleasant surprise to get a "tour" of the Mad Dogs and Englishman tour, back in the day. Thank you Linda!!
