About the author

Vannanilavan was born in Tirunelveli. His real name is U Ramachandran. He studied in Palayankottai, Tirunelveli and Sri Vaikundam and came to Chennai in 1973 in search of work. He worked for a short time in magazines like Kannadasan, Kanayazhi and Puduvaikural, and in Thuglak magazine in 1976 and later in 'Subhamangala' magazine. He has also worked as a dialogue writer for the Tamil film 'Aval Appadithaan' directed by Rudraiya. He married Subbulakshmi on April 07, 1977. They have a son named Anand Shankar and two daughters named Sasi and Uma. He currently lives in Kodambakkam, Chennai.

முதன்முதலில் இச்சிறுகதையைப் படித்தபோது சராசரிக்கும் குறைவான சிறுகதை என்றே எண்ணியிருந்தேன்.

இம்முறை உள்ளார்ந்த ஆர்வத்தோடு படிக்கும்போது, பஞ்சத்தைப் பற்றி இதைவிட வீரியமாக வேறு எப்படியும் விவரித்திருக்க முடியாது என்றே தோன்றுகிறது.

அடிக்கும் காற்றில், கொளுத்தும் வெயிலில், நிசப்தமான இரவில் என எங்கும் வறுமை வியாபித்திருக்கிறது.

வீட்டில் இருந்த கடைசி தீக்குச்சியும் தீர்ந்து போக, சுள்ளிகளைப் போட்டு இரவு பகலாக நெருப்பை அணைய விடாமல் பாதுகாக்கும் அளவிற்கு வறுமை வாட்டும் வாழ்க்கை.

சில வாரங்கள் முன் பிக் பாஸ் நிகழ்ச்சியில் கமல் ஹாசன் பரிந்துரைத்த சிறுகதை இது. மிகவும் அருமையான ஒரு சிறுகதை. வெறும் இருபது பக்கங்கள் கொண்டிருந்தாலும் அவ்வளவு வேகமாக முடித்து செல்ல முடியவில்லை.மனிதர்களின் இயலாமையை நேர்த்தியாக வெளிக்காட்டுகிறது. நொறுங்கிகொண்டு இருக்கும் குடும்பத்தை தாங்கி நிற்கும் நெடுந்தூண் தான் எஸ்தர். எஸ்தர் என்ற பெண்மணியின் வலிமையை உணர்த்துகிறார் எழுத்தாளர். பாட்டி, எஸ்தர் சித்தி மற்றும் குழந்தைகள் என மூன்று தலைமுறைகளின் விம்மல்களை இத்தனை பக்கங்களினுள் அடக்கியது அறுபுதம். முதல் ஐந்து பக்கங்கள் வேகமாக சென்றன. பிறகு மனதிற்குள் ஏதோ ஒரு பாரம். வாசிப்பு மெல்லவே சென்றது. நீர் இல்லாத ஒரு நிலத்தை பற்றி வாசிக்கையில் என்னவென்று தெரியாத ஒரு படபடப்பு. இவ்வுலகில் மனிதர்கள் எவ்வளவு சின்ன புள்ளிகள் என்று உணர்த்துகிறார் வண்ணநிலவன். அனைவராலும் கண்டிப்பாக வாசிக்கப்படவேண்டிய ஒரு சிறுகதை இந்த 'எஸ்தர்'.

'கடல்புரத்தில்' எனும் நாவல் மூலம் தான் வண்ணநிலவன் அறிமுகம். பிக் பாஸ் நிகழ்ச்சியின் மூலம் கமல் அறிமுகப்படுத்திய நாவல் 'எஸ்தர்'. அட வண்ணநிலவனின் நாவல்!. என்று வாங்கி படித்தேன். 17 சிறுகதைகள் அடங்கிய தொகுப்பு.

அதில் எஸ்தர் கதை என்னை மிகவும் பாதித்து விட்டது. எஸ்தர் சித்தி கதாபாத்திரம் சில நேரங்களில் என் தாயின் முகத்தை என் முன் கொண்டு வந்து நிறுத்தியது. காரணம் எங்களை வளர்க்க அவள் பட்ட கஷ்டம் தான்.

ஒரு கிராமத்தில் உள்ள மக்கள் - பஞ்சம், வறட்சியின் காரணமாக பிழைக்க வழியில்லாமல் இடம்பெயர்கிறார்கள். அதில் ஒரு குடும்பம் மட்டும் இருக்கிறது. அவர்களின் கதை பற்றியது தான் எஸ்தர்.

இது ஒரு அற்புதமான படைப்பு. நான் மேலோட்டமாக கதைகளை படிக்கிறேன் என்பதை எனக்கு உணர்த்தியது. ஏனெனில் சிறுகதை தானே என்று இந்த கதையை அணுகி விட முடியாது. அத்தனை ஆழம் கொண்டு மனதில் பாரம் ஏற்றுகிறது. 23 பக்கங்களில் இத்தனை உணர்வுகளை வெளிப்படுத்தி நம்மையும் உணர வைப்பதால் இது கூடுதல் பாராட்டுக்கள் பெறுகிறது.

This is a one of a kind short story. This book made me realise that I am not reading deep enough between the lines. Had to read certain parts for a second time to actually understand the crux. A beautiful story that leaves you with a heaving heart.

Cried in the end. The value of a person decreases over time and this book is about the person also who you don't see that often in the story and doesn't even talk a single word in the entire book. You can feel like you are living in the abandoned village feeling the suffering of the small family struggling with limited resources

Ester - alludes women'ism. gracefully contours three distinct age group women's out cast about the life. The story breezes through individual characters with a high dope ending.

Story backdrop set in a village called "Sathankulam/சாத்தாங்குளம்" Ramanathapuram district Tamilnadu.

The District is known for a dry weather and famine landscape. besides Sathankulam transcribes as DevilTown as like the haunting storyline.

This book is the deep explanation of a famine in a family. Every lines depicts the sadness and the long lasting sorrow of a family. It contains only few pages which explains their sorrow deeply. A tiny hope presents with them in their difficult time too. It reminds the quote "it's okay if all you did today was survived".This book also reminds me k.balachandar sir's thaneer movie.
