Egg World Allegory #1

The Cracking of Monday Egg

Rate this book
The Maker created Monday Egg for a very important reason. Monday just doesn’t understand it yet. Being an egg with arms and legs has its advantages. Monday can run like the wind and climb trees easily, but he is an egg. What happens when he cracks?

The Cracking of Monday Egg is the story of a cranky crow, a sick little girl, a kind squirrel and Monday’s struggle to deal with his own crackability.

The Cracking of Monday Egg is a cute and fun story about an Egg Man who must learn how to deal with the “cracking” of his fragile shell and how after it is healed it is stronger. It is also about discovering friendship, evil, kindness, and sacrifice. This book on the surface is a delightful children’s story, but the author does a fantastic job of also digging deeper and connecting the story to love and healing of the creator. There are simple lessons taught within the story that children and adults alike will be able to relate to their own lives. This is a fabulous book that is both fun and inspiring!

This is one of the most unique middle-grade books I have read in the past couple of years!

The author's approach to Christian fiction for middle-graders is to write in allegories. At the end of the version of the book I read, there was a section entitled, 'Introduction', wherein the author describes what an allegory is, what the purpose of this story is, and encouraging the readers to read the story "once as a story, and once as an allegory."

There is a set of ten study guides for themes identified in the book. Theme One is titled, 'The Maker is Good.' Each study guide begins with a brief biblical lesson, including applicable Bible verses, and moves on to questions for the reader to answer relating to the particular theme.

This book would best be used as a family, Sunday School, or small-group read-aloud where an adult leads the reading and discussion. I did not teach many middle-grade students as a classroom teacher who would be successful at navigating this text and the symbolism/allegories contained therein on their own.

This author excels at writing clever, and sometimes even witty, dialogue and at creating a picture for readers through his strong descriptive writing. The cover art is excellent and provides a visual introduction to the story by depicting the main character with two other main characters—one friend and one foe.

I was given a digital copy of this book by JustRead Publicity. I received no compensation of any kind for posting this review here or on any other site. The opinions expressed in this review are only my own.

This book is geared towards the middle grade readers and really anyone can enjoy it.
I had to love the egg and I will never look at an egg the same way again. Everytime I hold an egg I will think of Monday.
Just when he thought he was safe life would throw him another curve. It's the way life is.
It was never meant to be easy.
This little egg taught me much and gave me a gentle reminder for the One who loves all of us even Monday.
I must say, I've never read anything quite like this book but it was definitely a refreshing and relaxing read! It does make you stop and think.
I think the cover might have influenced me to pick it up and give it a try and I'm glad I did! The cover is so very cute!
It's such a sweet story.
The author has written this with such a wonderful outlook on life told directly from an egg. B.T. Higgins has done an excellent job with this cute story.
This book is sure to be a hit with people of all ages. I think it would make a great bedtime story!
Highly recommend.
My thanks to Just Read Tours NO compensations were received and all opinions are my own.

If you’re looking for a book you can share with your middle grade reader(s), The Cracking of Monday Egg is one to consider. And if you're heading out on a holiday (or any) road trip, this one’s available in audiobook format too.

On the surface, it appears to be a book about an egg who must learn to deal with living life with a fragile shell. Yet, B.T. Higgins manages to delve into deeper meanings throughout the book that made me stop and dig deeper.

Through his journey, Monday Egg discovers friendships, cruelty, pain, and sacrifice. He learns that his creator is also healer and has designed him perfectly. There are so many lessons and truths in Higgin’s little book to delve into.

The resources at the end of the book will promote deeper discussions and maybe have you flipping back and re-reading sections to soak up the allegorical undertones. Entertaining and thought provoking, The Cracking of Monday Egg is meatier than it seems on the surface.

The Cracking of Monday Egg by B.T. Higgins, An Egg World Allegory, is a cute little story about an egg with arms, legs, eyes and a mind. Monday is rather proud of his unblemished shell, and when it gets its first crack Monday is very upset. When it is repaired by Someone yet unknown to him, he is not pleased because now his shell has a scar and his shell is somewhat more fragile.

As Monday explores the world about him, he meets new friends such as Squirrel, but Monday still isn’t happy because he cracks his shell again! When a little girl finds Monday by a rock, she picks him up squeezing just a bit too tightly. The little girl checks him out closely, sees his arms and legs, even his eyes! When her father impatiently tells her to put the egg back where she found him, she scrambles to the place, stopping short of the rock and tosses him toward the rock. Tumbling head over heels Monday lands on the rock and his shell cracks again, only this time it’s worse, this time some of his insides leak out.

The unknown Someone gently scoops Monday Egg up once again, lovingly repairs his shell and sets him back into his world.

I gave this book 3 stars because I am not so sure a young reader, 3rd or 4th grade or so, would be able to extract the allegorical components of the story without discussion with an adult. If the intention was for parent and child to read and discuss the story together, then I’d give it 5 stars; I’m all for parents and children reading together.

This was a story for all ages. While this story is geared toward the younger/middle grade audience, I enjoyed it to. The main focus was on "Monday" how he makes friends and starts to take an interest in girls. (which is where I am at with my 8 year old....) On Monday's journey, he learns many life lessons. He learns about Cruelty, sacrifice, how to deal with pain and so much more. This was a good conversation prompter for my 8 and 6 year old boys. This is beautifully written, beautifully illustrated and allows you to explore a deeper meaning. I highly suggest this book for your nightly reading adventures.

The Cracking of Monday Egg is an allegorical novel for young readers. Following Monday Egg from his first conscious moment, the reader joins him on a journey to learn what it means to be an Egg Man, in constant danger of cracking and losing his yolk. As Monday Egg encounters a young girl, Crow, Squirrel, and listens to the voice of the “The Maker,” while continuing to question, learn, and grow.

Never heavy handed, this tale is one that at times had me hoping for some of the changes Monday Egg goes through to be a bit deeper. There are many small gems here, however, such as the growing understanding of what being broken and what it means for an Egg Man to have a “second making.”

Reading The Cracking of Monday Egg simply as a story is a delight, and reading allegorically – with the aid of the “Digging Deeper” section – only adds to it’s charm and meaning. Whether grabbing a copy for a young reader or for a family read aloud and study, this is a charming and worthwhile read.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from JustRead Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

What I Loved:
I loved that this was a story within a story, an allegory. I loved the references to things like the “second making.” It’s a book that you can read on the surface and enjoy, but you can also dig deeper into the words and get a more profound meaning.

How I Felt:
The Cracking of Monday Egg is such a deep story when you really start thinking about it. I feel that, while this was targeted for young children, it’s perfect for a young adult to adult reader. The story could definitely be read aloud to a child and a wonderful discussion could happen afterwards, however, older students are going to continue to think about the story and process all the heavier stuff.

The main story focuses on Monday’s awakening and life. We see him making friends and becoming interested in girls. The main idea though, is focused around his knowledge and understanding of “The Maker”. I was impressed with the writing of this story and the ability of the writer to create these ideas that were symbolic for something else. I think that each reader will get their own individual experience and take-away from reading this book because of the way it was written.

To Read or Not To Read:
I highly recommend this book for people that are interested in a more spiritual twist on a story. This will be most enjoyed by someone with a higher power background, I don’t know that you need to be Christian necessarily to enjoy it.

This can absolutely be enjoyed by children with an assist from an adult.

I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I chose this book to read and review because the adorable cover and the title just sounded like so much fun. In fact, I didn't figure the title out until I started reading the story, since I usually don't read reviews! And it sure was! The Cracking of Monday Egg is different than anything Ive read it a long time and I enjoyed it very much!

You just have to fall in love with Monday and the rest of the characters. And what a neat idea telling this story through the eyes of an egg. Im going to have a. ery hard time cracking an egg now, because I will feel I am destroying Monday! But the egg story was just the surface of this read. Readers will find as I did, that after I finished reading the book, I will start thinking more of the deeper meaning this author is telling.

I think any age would love this book, but it is also a wonderful book for your child to read. Or if the child isn't reading as of yet, then its a book you will have fun reading to them.

An ecopy of this book was given to me by the author or publisher. I am not required to write a positive review. The opinions here in this review are totally mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

The Cracking of Monday Egg is an allegory with a variety of themes. B. T. Higgins chose an interesting way to teach children about our Maker. I had a bit of a hard time understanding where the author was going with the story, making me wonder if children will have the same issue. Higgins includes information about each of his 10 themes - a “Think about it” section, scripture passage, and discussion questions. I think the best use for this book is probably a parent or grandparent reading to their family or a Sunday school or Christian school teacher reading their class. I think the interest level is early elementary while the reading level is upper elementary. I would advise that the adult read the book ahead of time to have a better idea of what is coming as I think children will have questions as they seek to understand the story.
There would not be a problem with placing this in my k-12 Christian school library. However, I’m not sure I would. I am not sure of the book’s appeal to children.

I loved 95% of this book. The story hooked me right away. So did the main character Monday Egg! I wondered if this would be a variation on Humpty Dumpty, but it was even better. Monday Egg is a story featuring talking eggs, cracked shells, magical yolks, a sick girl, and a villainous crow. I had to follow Monday and his story. I read 25 chapters in one day because I wanted to know how he survived each challenge. He did! He even thrived! I didn’t realize till I got ready to write this review that it’s an allegory with themes and lessons. They’re not hidden from the reader. They’re ready to be mined and used. My only disappointment was the ending. This was such a great story, and the ending wasn’t satisfying for me. I wanted a tiny bit more for the girl. You’ll understand if you read it, and I think you should. I gave it 4 stars because it’s close to great, but not quite there, for me.

While this tale first appears to surround the adventure of a fragile egg, who is afraid to crack, it soon becomes clear that it's about so much more than that.

I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical to read a middle grade novel with an egg as the main character, but this is an egg worth reading about. The egg's fears mold into messages, which run much deeper than that, as he discovers friends, faces new troubles, and even learns that his creator might be kinder than first thought. The egg might discover he's not as fragile as he first thought.

The story itself is nicely written. The tale flows well and fits the intended age group. While some moments pulled along a bit better than others, the egg was fun to follow, and it wasn't hard to sympathize with its plight. It's a wholesome read with some great messages.

I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed the tale enough to want to leave my honest thoughts.

Mr. Higgins brings an egg to life in this clever, delightful allegorical story. The slow realization of Monday awakening to his consciousness, meeting and making friends with the squirrel, his consideration for the girl, but mostly the understanding of the Maker’s presence and purpose.
We follow Monday’s journey through delightful and vivid adventures, immersing the reader fully in the story.
Deep and profound Truths hidden in the fabric of this tale, Monday Egg discovery of his true self and purpose easily translates into life lessons for young readers.

I chose to read this book because I thought it would be great read to read to my granddaughter. While it is a cute story on the surface about the life and struggles of an egg,it dives deeper with allegories of trails we face in our every day life and how "the Creater" is there with us through it all and there to heal our hurts, inside and out.

Local Alaskan Author…Added this one to my favorite books list. I do recommend reading the chapter themes located in back of book before reading chapter. Also, I loaned it to a friend and she wants to transfer all her favorite quotes via sticky notes to new copy before returning it bc she enjoyed it that much. And all the time while it was on loan my kids were disappointed it wasn’t at home so they could re-re-read it. It’s a sweet one!
