A Practice Beyond Cultural Humility offers specific guidance to support students and practitioners in providing on-going, culturally-attuned professional care. The book introduces a multicultural diversity-training model named the ORCA-Stance, an intentional practice which brings together four core Openness, Respect, Curiosity, and Accountability. Drawing from an array of influences, it showcases work with common clinical populations in a variety of contexts, from private practice to international organizations. Each clinical chapter offers a brief review of information relevant to the population discussed, followed by a case study using the ORCA-Stance, and a summary of recommended best practices. In each case, the practice of the ORCA-Stance is shown to allow relationships to become more culturally sensitive and, therefore, more effective. A Practice Beyond Cultural Humility provides practical examples, research, and wisdom that can be applied in day-to-day clinical work and will be valuable reading for a wide-range of mental health students and clinicians who seek to continue their professional development.
This book is for my counselors friends/ co-labors. The subject of cultural humility is one that held my attention for years. I liked it so much I wrote a dissertation about it. This book is great for any counselor. The authors present a way to conceptualize the main tentants of cultural humility with the ORCA model (Openness, Respect, Curiousity, and Accountability). It is an expansion of the cultural humility literature. The ORCA model seems as though it can be easily integrated into therapy models and enhance the care for clients. This book is an editted book and has thirty-two short chapters. It is accessible to most readers. Most of the research jargon and discussions of th philosophical assumptions are in the beginning of the book. I really liked this book. I am considering teaching the ORCA model to students and couples. So I will definitely be talking about ORCA again. Overall, this book was a 4.5/5. I deducted some points because some of the chapters could have been clearer or exclude
This is a great book with stand-alone chapters featuring various clinical issues or life situations in which one should demonstrate cultural humility through the ORCA stance. ORCA stands for openness, respect, curiosity, and accountability. The authors come from Seattle, where Orca whales are part of their culture. Although not an explicitly Christian book, the concepts do align with Scripture. Organizations, schools, churches, etc could use this book.
