Set during the English Civil War when families were divided by conflicting loyalties to Crown or Commonwealth, Written in Their Stars is superb historical fiction. The novel sizzles with emotion and tension as Liz St. John’s memorable characters struggle to overcome defeat, tragic losses, and the terrors of a country at war with itself. Highly recommended.

I read Elizabeth St. John's first novel in the trilogy - The Lady of the Tower - and was equally impressed. Wonderful use of language to

"—and tonight we have attained the destiny foretold by the stars." John held her at arm's length, and a knife-blade of cold air sliced between them. "I signed the warrant to execute Charles Stuart, once King of England."

This is what they had fought for. This is what they had died for. The King was dead. Parliament had won. With Charles' blood comes rebirth. A nation born again.

But, to sign the death warrant of a king is no small thing. But the dream... The dream is too intoxicating, too great to

“Written in their Stars” is a fascinating historical fiction that will transport you into the turbulent world of 17th century England and will make you hold your breath as the characters (based on real people) find themselves on different sides of the metaphorical barricade. John had just signed an order for King Charles’s execution, which, in turn, installed Cromwell as the country’s current ruler. However, the dream of a democratic republic remained just that, a dream, and now, the ...more

This is the third novel in this trilogy - and I read it before the other two. Although one might think women during the reigns of Kings James, Charles I and II, were more ornamental than active participants, the lives of the three main characters, Nan, Luce, and Frances, based on these women's real lives, proves that wholely wrong. In Elizabeth St. John's trilogy, she shares her own family history, drawn from family diaries and at least one history written by an ancestor. The family estate, ...more

Written in their Stars is a beautifully crafted story that poetically takes the reader through much heartbreak, difficulty, and loss, but also plenty of intrigue, drama, and joy - told from the perspectives of three strong and influential women. Each of the main characters has their own unique voice and viewpoint on their world which leads to plenty of strains and strengthenings of family bonds. Elizabeth St. John's signature in-depth and beautifully described world-building shines as bright in ...more

“And now death, the ultimate Lord of Misrule, commanded her to change partners in the masque. Nan would take his bony hand and dance his volta. She cared not who she cavorted with, simply that she survive the dance’s end.”

Written in their Stars is an elegantly written, impeccably researched and richly detailed novel set during the years following the execution of King Charles I. The story is told through three influential women, all bound by kinship. The author has taken diaries and letters

Elizabeth St.John was brought up in England and lives in California. She has tracked down family papers and sites from Nottingham Castle, Lydiard Park, and the British Library to Castle Fonmon and The Tower of London. Although the family sold a few castles and country homes along the way (it's hard to keep a good castle going these days), Elizabeth's family still occupy them - in the form of ...more
