A heartwarming cozy mystery series about losing everything, taking a chance, and starting again.
After suffering a personal tragedy Abby Sullivan buys a huge old seaside mansion she has never even seen, packs up her life in San Francisco, and moves to Holiday Bay Maine, where she is adopted, quite against her will, by a huge Maine Coon Cat named Rufus, a drifter with her own tragic past named Georgia, and a giant dog with an inferiority complex named Ramos. What Abby thought she needed was alone time to heal. What she ended up with was, an inn she never knew she wanted, a cat she couldn't seem to convince to leave, and a new family she'd never be able to live without.
In book 8 in the series, Abby's agent asks for help when the house she was going to rent to host a writers retreat becomes unavailable. After a bit of discussion, Abby agrees to have the retreat at the inn. The seven writers who will be staying at the inn for the week long event are new to publishing and Kate hopes the mentor she has hired to run things will be able to provide the valuable tips these new authors need. Of course what she doesn't know is that Abby has a past with this particular mentor, and when all is said and done, fireworks of one sort or another are likely.
Meanwhile, Georgia has started taping her new cooking show, Abby is worried about the approaching blizzard, and Colt has a murder to solve, after six men get together for a friendly poker game but only five of the six men make it to the end of the night alive.
Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home. Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

2.5 stars. I wasn't into this one at all. I didn't care about the mystery and I didn't think it was really cozy, despite the blizzard. There was some cozier talk of special weekends at the inn but the rest just didn't do it for me this time.
Great colorful interesting characters that keep me wanting more. The storyline will pull you in like it did me ! Youw5583 c don't want to miss this one.
Not one of the better entries to the series. Many questions are left unanswered, including who actually committed the murder, and why. A subplot revolves around a young writer who may or may not be writing a true tale. We never find out if she is nor how her story ends. This has been a good series from a very good author, but this entry leaves a lot to be desired.
Blizzard in the Bay is the eighth book in Kathi Daley’s heartwarming The Inn at Holiday Bay series. The setting is charming, and the well-developed characters are three-dimensional, compassionate, and caring. The storyline is well-plotted, with lots going on to keep the reader engaged. There are lots of twists and red herrings in this complex mystery. The writing style flows smoothly, and the book is a clean and easy read. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.
Abby Sullivan’s life was dramatically changed when she lost her husband and their infant son in a tragic accident two years ago, but since moving to Holiday Bay, Maine and opening the Inn at Holiday Bay, she’s made a new life for herself and found a home and a family. Georgia Carter, the inn’s talented cook/baker and manager, and her dog, Ramos, live with Abby, Rufus, a Maine Coon, and Molly, a terrier mix, in a cottage located on the property. Jeremy Slater, who lives in the inn’s basement apartment with his young niece, Annabelle, has proven himself to be a valuable asset as he helps Georgia with the day-to-day operations of the inn. Abby’s agent, Kate, arranged for a four-day writers’ retreat to be held at the inn. Abby’s excited about the retreat and meeting the authors, but a little concerned when she learns the group’s mentor will be Dax Sherman, a writer she met at the first retreat she attended. As a blizzard approaches, Abby, Georgia, and Jeremy make sure the inn has everything they need and that their guests will be comfortable in case they’re snowed in. When Train Tyson is murdered during a poker game at his brother’s house, Abby’s friend, Police Chief Colt Wilder, has a murder to investigate, and unfortunately, one of the prime suspects is a guest at the inn.
Another strong entry in a great series! The Inn at Holiday Bay is hosting a writers' retreat and there's a merry cast of aspiring authors, led by Dax Sherman. Abby has a strong attraction to him and is reluctant to see him again but sucks it up. But the mystery -ahhh, a juicy mystery! - during a break in a poker game, a man is found stabbed to death and none of the other people at the game saw it happen - or what anyone else was doing during the break. Dax was at the game and is one of the top suspects after it's revealed that not only did he know the victm, he also had a motive to see him dead. There was a lot for Sheriff Colt Wilder to untangle and Abby is there to wade through the alibis to find the killer. Colt and Abby make a good team, and while I think it's unlikely that a sheriff would be so forthcoming about the facts of an investigation, I'm willing to look past that. Abby is great at coming up with some pretty far fetched theories and suprisingly, is frequently correct.
This one was focused solely on the mystery and less about the other characters and their issues and I liked that. The last couple of books had a lot of relationship angst, but it served to move the characters forward and this book had some progress made in a few areas. I also liked the writers at the retreat, and I'd LOVE to read the time traveling nun story!
Overall, a great, entertaining read in a series I'd expect nothing less.
A writer's retreat at The Inn at Holiday Bay brings Abby's old writing partner to Holiday Bay. Learning more about her past is always interesting, though I wish the author had gone even further and deeper into Abby's past. This also was the perfect opportunity to show more of Abby the writer, and we didn't get nearly enough of that. Still, the character development is what makes this series as good as it is, and that was definitely present, especially with Jeremy developing his writing skills.
Kathi Daley has once again written this book, 8th in the Inn at Holiday Bay series, using her well developed characters, Abby Sullivan (writer and owner of the Inn), Georgia Carter (Coordinator for the Inn and Chef of a television show) and Jeremy Slater (grounds keeper and back up chef). We're introduced to several other characters who are attending a four day Writer's Retreat that has been rescheduled when the original location falls through. The Writer's Retreat is being led by Dax Sherman, author, who Abby Sullivan met at her first writer's retreat she attended. Abby debates about taking a short vacation when she heard Dax was going to lead the retreat. The day after those attending the retreat were scheduled to arrive, there is a prediction for blizzard conditions. The day Dax Sherman arrives Abby finds she may still have feelings for him but isn't sure about his feelings. Dax's plan to visit Tank Tyson, a college friend of his older brother but finds out there is a poker game and is asked to attend. After a break in the game and waiting for pizza, everyone goes in their different directions. When the game resumes, one of the players is missing. Police Chief Colt Wilder is given a case with no one having answers of how or who may have did it. Abby helps Colt put together the pieces. During this four day event, Abby is concerned about her Maine Coon cat, Rufus, who has stopped eating and is sleeping most the time. Not sure if she can make it to the Vet, Colt picks her up with Rufus and delivers them to the Vet. The relationship between Abby and Colt is developing. I love this series and the wonderful twists and turns Kathi puts into her books. Each of characters continue to develop and we are able to see relationship develop.
I enjoyed this 8th in the series. Abby hosts a writers retreat and one of the guests ends up a suspect after showing up to a poker game where a dead body is found. I love the characters that Ms. Daley creates, they are real and make it easy to get involved in the story. The mystery was good and kept me guessing with a new layer that uncovers as you continue to read. I will definitely continue on with this series.
This is a wonderful series but I was a bit disappointed by this book because the murder was not actually solved. In addition, Rufus, the beloved cat in the series, is ill and we do not find out if he is significantly better by the end of the book. This book definitely left me wanting more, and I hope some of the unresolved elements from this book are resolved in the next book. I do absolutely love the characters in this series, and the development of the characters is effective and nicely paced.
Blizzard in the Bay by Kathi Daley was another solid mystery in this series. I am always ready to visit the Inn to see what Abby, Georgia, Velma and Colt have been doing since my last visit. A quickly paced plot with twists, turns and a very small suspect pool made this one a book that I couldn't put down.
I enjoyed returning to Holiday Bay! Despite the predicted blizzard, the writers’ retreat occurring at the Inn makes for the start of a pleasant weekend. There are a couple little exceptions: an old colleague joining the retreat and a murder during a poker game. The primary characters have depth and are likable and engaging, and I love the setting!
I like Abby and Georgia; they have had more than their share of adversity. They met shortly after Abby moved to Holiday Bay and bought the inn. Georgia is an excellent chef and manager while Abby writes the second of two thrillers she is under contract for. Her agent, Kate, filled the inn this weekend when the venue for her writers’ retreat had to cancel.
Kate represents the writers. Each is unique with delightful traits. The person mentoring the group is none other than Dax Sherman, a bestselling author Abby met when her career started. Abby and her late husband Ben were engaged to be married and her ring was at the jeweler when she met Dax at her first retreat. This weekend, she examines her old attraction to Dax and is hesitant to approach him. It may have been more than a decade since she met the best writer whose books she has read, but Georgia feels Abby owes it to herself to see if there was a connection between them.
There is someone else Abby owes it to. She has been going out, as friends with an understanding, with Colt Wilder, the local police chief. They met shortly after she bought the inn, and they found they made a good team to help solve some of the local crimes. Her intuition and logical thinking have helped them talk through cases he has had since she moved here.
A blizzard is on the way, with snow expected the night of the expected authors’ check-ins. All arrive safely and, as the storm isn’t too bad yet, Dax is going out to visit Tank, a college friend of his brother. Early the next morning, Dax calls Abby from the police station. He will be late returning – could she open the retreat for him? He has been detained as Tank’s brother Train was murdered last night. Unknown to Dax until he arrived, a poker game was going on, so he joined it. Train came when it was underway. Train was killed on the back porch when he stepped out for a cigarette.
This brings a slight conflict to Abby, as her friend Colt is in charge of the investigation, while old writing buddy Dax becomes a suspect – as is every person at the game. It seems each man there, except probably Dax, has a history with the victim. Train wasn’t that great of a guy and was not well liked. Everyone there is happy to point to someone else as a suspect for one reason or another – even Tank.
Plot twists are well-spaced and continue to change the face of the murder. The blizzard has its own hazards and is a deterrent to investigating at times. I like the regular characters in this series, and it is one of my two favorite series of the author. This time, though, the ending was vague (for me) regarding whodunit and a couple additional open ends. While it is assumed who the culprit is, it wasn’t definite, which is not what I usually feel with this author. It was quite the challenge to solve, however, which is good! Overall, I do recommend this novel and series, as the vague areas are this reader’s opinion.
From a thankful heart: I won a copy of this novel from the author and Lisa K’s book blog; a review was not requested.
Blizzard by the Bay earns 5/5 Plot Twists...Totally Engaging!
Kathi Daley has penned another excellent drama with her ninth book in The Inn at Holiday Bay series. As a favor to her agent Kate, Abby is hosting a writers’ retreat for Kate’s newest writers who vary in age, style, genre, and not themselves without a few mysterious dramas. However, she learns the mentor taking charge is an old writing buddy. Years before Abby found herself attracted to said writing buddy, although at the time she was engaged. Now, there’s the relationship with Colt, although slowly evolving, so her apprehension has her contemplating running away for the duration. But, all goes very well with the reunion...relaxed, friendly, but is that a spark? Maybe, but all that is put aside when she is alarmed by an early call from him. There’s been a murder, and her old friend is at the police station being interviewed as a...witness? or a suspect? Six guys. Stranger arrives in need. Pizza delivery. Murder. Secrets revealed. A storm is brewing at Holiday Bay...literally and figuratively.
Very engaging! Kathi Daley’s writing style is a treat with language that brings about marvelous pictures of the wintery weather, characters, and setting. The dialogue does well to illustrate tone and emotions and varied personalities from naive to in-the-know, from quiet to outspoken, from innocent to suspicious. Kathi unfolds the drama often passively through conversations, Abby’s inner thoughts, and retelling of discoveries to piece together; there’s less direct legwork and surveillance, but not to say there aren’t some great surprises. Her characters are developing well, consistent in their responses, and reacting in a manner that is realistic. You might recognize in them friends, family, and acquaintances making an engaging read...the “I” perspective gives me a vicarious role. Abby has been gaining her footing since her family tragedy. She still has to deal with fears and lapses in confidence, and her gaining strength and a better understanding of what she wants has been fun to read! I wish there had been a recipe or two included. A opportunity missed with Georgia as the Inn’s chef and star of a local weekly cooking show; sharing some of her recipes would have been a great bonus.
I went back to Holiday Bay for its newest installment, Blizzard in the Bay, and I was not disappointed. We join Abby and Georgia at the Inn where they are hosting a writer's retreat. There is a blizzard starting and surprisingly the mystery itself is not at the Inn but at the home of a friend of one of their guests. Colt is a honest and reliable as ever and I definitely will keep reading to see how their relationship turns out.
While this is one of my favorite series, I didn't find this story line as engaging as others in the series. Usually there is closure in the murder of her books, there was none in this one. It was all speculation. I do look forward to the next book in the series and hope its more of the story line I'd come to enjoy.
I enjoyed this whodunit with all its twists and turns. The inn was a writer's retreat in the dead of winter. One of the writers, Dax, went to a poker game where a dead body came up. Abby and Colt out their heads together and solved the case. And to my delight, something seems to be hearing up between the two of them.
The Inn is taken over as a Writer’s Retreat and soon becomes closed off by a blizzard. It all sounds as “snug as a bug in a rug” and makes me wish I was there. Abby runs into an old writer friend she hasn’t seen in years and whom she had a crush on before she married her late husband. Abby and Colt work together to solve a murder that seems hard to solve. I really love the setting of this book/series and felt right at home. The animals are wonderful and the characters very well written.
I really enjoy the Inn at Holiday Series. It’s probably my favorite of Kathi Daley’s many cozy series. The characters are engaging and there is always something interesting happening at the Inn in each one. This time a group of writers are at a writer’s retreat at the inn in Maine during a blizzard. Meanwhile a man is killed during a break in a poker game in town. The 5 other players all had sketchy alibis, one of them is the leader of the retreat.
I really enjoyed trying to figure out who the murderer was. The only problem I had with the story is that while it appeared the right suspect was arrested, there were still some loose ends. Was there another unknown person involved and did they find the proof needed that would convict the suspect? I prefer cozies with all loose ends tied up.
I was disappointed that there was no one actually arrested for the murder at the end. It just remained up in the air, and a couple lesser crimes by the same suspects were solved. I know this is a cozy mystery, but it amazes me that the police chief was so willing to share so many details with Abby and the diner owner. I was pleased that Abby and Colt do plan to get away together - that part of the ending was a good one.
What happened? Who dun it? Really, that’s it? Did the author just get tired of the story? The real mystery is where is the rest of this book? So disappointing!
Blizzard in the Bay #8 in The Inn at Holiday Bay Series by Kathi Daley Abby Sullivan owner of the Inn, young widow who recently bought, remodeled this fabulous old Inn on the coast of Maine. Abby and Georgia do theme weekends that draw crowd's also parties for the town to come to for holidays. This draws her to local police officer Colt who is kind enough to stop by to check in on the Inn during bad weather to see if they need supplies while they feed him warm meals.
This week they are going to be having a Huge snowstorm. The Inn is hosting a writers retreat for 7 writers. All whom have interesting stories to flush out during this stay. They will be paired up with a partner to each help further their stories. Some sound odd until explained then fascinating. Hazel Garwood 1st time novelist in her 80s. A time traveling nun story. Jeremy the Inns resident asst cook and landscaper was asked if he could be the 8th person for the writers group to pair up. 5 guys were in the house no one saw anything... How will Abby help Colt solve this? Is her Author friend involved? As always Kathi Daley weaves A vivid story of characters, food, scenery, 🐾 fun animals, cozy warm fun💗📚
This is the eighth book in the series which I have loved. It features Abby Sullivan, an author, who buys an old house on the coast of Maine after losing her husband and infant son in an accident. She goes there planning on spending time alone but is adopted by a big Maine Coon named Rufus and is joined by a woman named Georgia and her giant dog, Ramos, as she transforms the house into an inn.
In this book, Abby's agent contacts her and asks if she can use the Inn as a writer's retreat. There are seven writers and a mentor who winds up being someone from Abby's past. When that man goes to a friend's house he ends up playing poker with five other men, one of whom is murdered. As Colt investigates, it turns out that the five survivors all have secrets that they don't want revealed and some of them were being blackmailed by the victim. It's up to Colt to solve the mystery and Abby helps out. And, as if that wasn't enough, Holiday Bay is hit by a blizzard.
I really enjoyed this book and the series is great. The essence of small town life is captured and I love the characters. It's nice to see how each of them moves on putting their pasts behind them. However, I was a bit disappointed with the ending as it left some questions unanswered. I hope that they're cleared up in the next book. I do suggest both book and series which I suggest you read in order.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
In this next book of the series Abby is getting ready to host a writer's retreat at her Inn. Her agent booked the retreat for a group of writers after their previous location fell through. Abby agreed to the retreat and is looking forward to it until she finds out a man from her past will be attending. The man in question had Abby looking at feelings that she had no way of responding to. She would like to remedy these feelings once and for all but doesn't want to hurt anyone in the process. Will she be able to deal or will she hide herself away while the writers enjoy their event? Meanwhile Colt is dealing with a murder and Georgia has started taking her new cooking show, not to mention a blizzard that is about to hit them. Follow along as Abby tries to make sense of her feelings, deals with the writers group and helps Colt and Georgia in all the ways only she can. This is a lovely series that its just a mystery but a view into the life of a woman slowly healing from tragedy that at one time consumed her.
When Abby's editor, Kate, is let down by the hotel she's booked a writing retreat at for a group of new authors Abby is able to offer the Inn as a replacement venue.
She's got to deal with some emotional issues when she realises it's being lead by Dax who she had a mild crush on some years ago before she married Ben. These are it turns out easily quashed when he appears to be involved in a murder case.
Dax and several other men meet up for a poker night at Tank's house.. during the evening his brother Train is found dead on the back porch.. it seems that most of them have reason to want Train out of the way but who's telling the truth? It seems that either everyone is or everyone is lying.. Colt and Abby are sure it's the latter but how do you find the truth when all the witnesses lie and not one has an alibi..
These are nothing dramatic just bland tales with hints that there could be a more interesting development but no follow through.
Blizzard in the Bay is the eighth book in the fabulous The Inn at Holiday Bay cozy mystery series by Kathi Daley. The elements of a cozy mystery are present including suspense, danger, romance, humor, love, friends and family, and a sense of community. In this story, a writer’s retreat is held at the Inn and one of the guests becomes involved in a murder investigation. It was fun to learn a little more about Abby’s past. I could hardly put the book down. There are several heart-warming/heart-wrenching stories within the mystery. As always, Ms. Daley’s writing flows smoothly, and her setting and relatable characters make for an extremely enjoyable read. I really look forward to reading the next book in this series.
I love this series and I love this author. I gave three stars to this one, though, because it was the first one where I've felt the storyline was just a bit too repetitive. I know the story revolves around Colt and Abby solving the crime and I also understand that they have to review facts with one another. However, this time, it seemed like the stories were told over and over in Colt interviewing suspects, Abby and Colt discussing the facts and in Abby reviewing the facts in her mind. I had to hear the facts just a few times too many.
Still, I still love the characters, the setting--everything about these books. They are absolutely perfect for curling up with a cat in front of a fireplace for a couple hours of reading.
Abby and Georgia were looking forward to an empty inn following New Years', but Abby's book agent Kate is suddenly in need of a location to host a writers' workshop. The ladies are happy to oblige. When Abby finds out that Dax Sherman is the author who will be overseeing the event she is ready to leave town. She and Dax were partnered at a similar workshop many years ago. They really hit it off. Since Abby was newly engaged to Ben she never saw Dax after that. Now they get to spend a week together during which time a blizzard hits Holiday Bay and snows them in and Dax becomes a suspect in a murder which took place the evening he arrived in town. Given the opportunity to get better acquainted, Abby finds out how she really feels toward this fellow author who seems to be Mr. Perfect.
In this installment, Abby ‘s agent needs her help when the place she was going to hold a retreat is no longer available and asks her to hold it at the inn instead. It was supposed to be seven new writers and a hired mentor who shares a secret past with Abby as they have clashed before and more likely to do so again.
Georgia is busy with taping of her new cooking show as a blizzard is approaching. Colt is playing poker with six other guys but only six will be alive the next morning.
Once again it is another pack storyline. Nice cozy read to snuggle up with bad weather forecasting,
