"My kingdom isn't one you find in fairy tales. Instead, it's built on corruption, lies, and murder."
Charlie Raised by the chief of police, I knew tangling with the mafia leader of Northridge Heights was a bad idea. Yet as I gazed into his dark eyes, I couldn't resist Teddy's offer. We made a deal. He helps me find my fathers murderer, and I'll stand by his side as paid protection. But nothing could protect my heart—from him. I saw a side of him few ever do, and it left me aching for him. Now, there's a new deal. Stand by his side and reign as his queen. Am I ready to join the seedy underbelly of mafia life, knowing one among them murdered my father?
Teddy When I made the chief of police a deal, I never knew he had a daughter. After his death, I felt compelled to watch over her and keep her safe. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love. But helping her fit into my world wouldn't be easy. She had to be trained. Groomed. Educated. To my great relief, my beautiful Charlie exceeded my wildest expectations. Still, I live in fear that if the secrets I've kept come to light, my queen will become my enemy.

Okay, so all stories have great and not-so-great moments, but fairness and honesty are at the core of our review policy. If we do not feel like we can be truthful, we just won't write the review. We were okay with the book, but not glued to it.
Not So Great Moments
Come on, we understand readers like strong female characters but Charlie's ability to fight a man in the gym was just way too much. We were certain her wardrobe contained a red, white and blue cape. She could probably leap tall buildings in a single bound. Her super spidey senses told her exactly when a bad guy was packing. She could even take down a big, macho guy with one swat of a high heel. Perhaps, make a bomb out of a mascara wand.
But every superhero has a kryptonite. After Teddy killed a man in a club, Charlie cried. Shouldn't a seasoned super woman expect to run into bloodshed at some point in her venture with the mafia?
SHE LOVES HIM....SHE LOVES HIM NOT
At one point, the gun toting, fist flying, superhero said she couldn't love a killer. But she was 'hired' to be a bodyguard to a mafia leader, and killing is exactly what a body guard is supposed to do. The character's emotions did not line up with her talk. She spent 40 percent of the book detesting Teddy, then slapped him in the face after he told her that he had a half-brother. Why? What is wrong with having a half brother? AND in the same breath, she internally professed her own love for him.
And the pet name, Monkshood? Please, someone tell Teddy the name Monkshood isn't sexy, sweet or endearing. Seeing the word over and over again pulled us out of the story.
'ALMOST' MADE US LOVE TEDDY
Teddy was basically a cardboard cutout mafia character. Other than his thirst for blood, acquaintance with Charlie's dad, and the fact that Teddy had a half-brother did not make him an interesting, three-dimensional character. Gosh, this was a letdown-like being served a luscious chocolate cake but not allowed to eat it. Hopefully for those who read the next installment, more will be revealed about Teddy. The morsels of tender moments with Charlie was not enough to make us fall in love with this character.
TEDDY WAS NO TEDDY BEAR
Teddy is a mafia leader, therefore we expected him to torture and cut off the fingers of his enemies. What we did not expect was his ability to get it on with Charlie before the blood even dried on his shirt.
Yuck. Yuck. Yucky.
And Charlie was okay with nasty blood smears all over her body? That is downright weird.
"This is Theodore Hale, leader of the Hale Family mafia. Covered in blood, yet so beautiful. I raise my hands carefully, and run my fingers through his hair, coating them in blood."
But just when we thought the weirdness was over, things got weirder.
"I move my hands and trace the path his hands followed up my body, leaving a trail of blood until they meet. I rest them on top of his. He squeezes me and I moan, letting my head fall back and my back arch with anticipation."
Ew, Charlie allowed him to smear the blood all over her.
THE CRYPTIC ENDING
The ending was very unsatisfying...a set up for another book. We were left empty handed about the death of Charlie's father and the contents of the mysterious file. Oh, but a character (We will not mention the name) reappeared on the very last page.
Great Moments
1. Love scenes weren't too long. Normally adult romance writers feel like they have to write three- and-four page length love scenes. We don't mind them; however we don't want to feel like we're drowning in body fluids after the book is over.
2. Plotting. This book has an actual plot! Although the unfinished situation with the key and the file folder were not fully answered, we were not given an information dump.
3. Some impressive writing...phrases and descriptions. If the author is new, the writing didn't reflect it.
SUMMING IT UP
Since it is obvious this is going to be a series, we have no idea how long it will be before book 2 is available. But because we try to read every book on our schedule, continuing on to the next installment of any serial requires us to be absolutely in love with the first book.
REVIEW
3 STARS
Extra Cup of Regular Coffee We were willing to read on to find out what happened next.
This is an intriguing start to a mafia series. Some things were predictable for me, but that have not stopped me in enjoying the story of Charlie and Teddy. I’m in for the next book 😀. Ends in cliffhanger.
B. L. Mute The Devious King (The Hale Mafia 1) 𝑨𝒓𝒄 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏 𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘.
The first installment of the Hale Mafia series is full of secrets, lies and betrayal. The plot was mysterious from start to finish. Only downside was that I felt the story jumped too much. There was alot of action that felt forced and didnt mesh together with the plot. The storyline still remains an enigma.
The hero is mysterious, the leader of Hale mafia and is on his own journey for revenge. On his own agenda, his actions are devious and he will do whatever it takes to get what he wants. I loved his stalker tendencies. Charlie is a strong heroine. A badass. I loved that she could hold her own but sometimes it seemed unrealistic. I especially like the twins. I hope we get to read more about them and their background. Would also like to know more about Teddy's half brother.
The book ends with a cliffhanger. Be prepared because the ending will shock you. However, we are back to square one, having more questions and knowing very little about her fathers murder. The Hale Mafia series consist of three books. Coming soon, book 2: The Vengeful King?
The Devious King is the first time reading B.L. Mute and I have to say that she brings a different twist to a mafia life. Reading this book was like watching an in-depth mafia movie. B.L doesn't drop you into the middle of a war or romance but gradually walks you through the life and romance that she is introducing you to. It took a bit to get used to. But once I did I was drawn in and couldn't put The Devious King down.
I would recommend this story to anyone that enjoys mafia stories.
I hardcore loved this! The characters were perfection the detail amazing I seriously can’t wait to find out what happens next! And was he seriously hiding out for a month 😶
Bl Mute is a new to me author and I really enjoyed her writing style. The Devious King is a dark, suspenseful mafia romance that keeps you thoroughly engrossed from start to finish. This book has it all, from murder and mystery, to the mafia and drug cartels, i'm already fiending for the next installment.
Charlie is such a strong female lead and I love that as a trait in a heroine. Growing up as the police chief's daughter, she been criticized and judged for most of her life. When her father ends up dead and all hints lead back to an investigation he was doing, Charlie finds herself on the wrong side of the law when mob boss and acquaintance to her father, Nathan Hale, shows up with an offer for her.
The plot of this book is pretty fast paced and there is tons of suspense, making it hard to put the book down. Teddy and Charlie's romance is hot and intense and I lived for those moments between them. I also really enjoyed the secondary characters Lucas and Julius, Teddy's twin bodyguards. As intense as they were, they added some comedy too. I hope they will get their own stories as well.
This book ends on a wild cliffhanger and I have no idea when the next book will be out. My only complaint about this book is there was a bit too much foreshadowing, which took away from the wow factor at the end. The ending still left me gasping but I think with a few less hints throughout the book it could've been much more shocking.
I’ve just finished the book and I seriously have no idea what just happened. I’ve heard that the book ended in a cliffhanger, but I wasn’t ready for this! The whole plot left me with so many questions…!
Charlie’s father was murdered 6 months ago. Since he was the chief of the police no one really wants to tell her what actually happened. Her life because even weirder when Theodore Hale approaches her. What does this Mafia King want with her? After that first meeting everything changes. She’s thrust into the mafia world, while Teddy is grooming her to be by his side.
It's apparent that the author has some aces up her sleeve. I waited for at least some answers by the end of the book, but I was left with more questions. There’s too many things happening and Teddy keeps to many secrets from her. Their initial attraction came as a surprise for me but after that their chemistry was undeniable. I’ll be eagerly waiting for the next book!!!!
While I enjoyed the story itself, being it was a mafia romance, I didn’t feel there was a real connection or romance between Teddy and Charlie. Apart from watching her over the years, I never figured out where real emotions and feelings came in to play. For either character. I saw the lust each had for the other, but not real love.
But the story was good and kept my attention the whole time. Charlie is looking for answers for her father’s murder and Teddy wants to end the cartel in his city. They won’t get the answers they seek in this book but I am hoping with THE VENGEFUL QUEEN they will. After that spectacular cliffhanger of an ending, I fear all hell is about to break loose. 4 Stars!
Devious King is book one in The Hale Mafia. It is a brilliant read.
Charlie is the daughter of the Chief of Police. She’s a very likeable and strong character. When her father is murdered she is determined to find out who killed him. Teddy is a mafia boss who must now follow through on the deal he made with her father.
Brilliant storyline with some great characters. That ending though... hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next book.
This book makes no sense! I kept flipping pages back and forward looking for missing pages, things happens without reason. The h was 25 and so annoying, what did she do exactly?!? I didn't understand... She was a badass but got her ass handle every time and than behave like a toddler! The "i love you" made no sense at all!
Certo, eu gostei do primeiro livro. Foi legal... Tirando o fato de que não achei Charlote uma fodona, como todos parecem achar, e o Lucas ser um bundão... até que foi bom. Realmente legal.
There are two genres that can make me let go of everything to read them. They are MC and Mafia. These two are my top favorites and I can't get enough. When I read this blurb I knew that I needed to read it. It was so appealing and the need to know of more was super strong. To top this, I had the chance to meet a new author and I couldn't be more happy. B.L. Mute is a new author to me and let's just say that I'm hooked. Her writing is raw and wild, dark with a touch of the unknown. Oh boy... The Devious King is her latest release and it's the first book from The Hale Mafia series. This new book explores the lives of Charlie and Teddy. Charlie's life was a normal one until the day her father was murdered. She needs to find the assassins even if, for that to happen, she needs to make an alliance with a Mafia lord. Teddy is a mafia lord and a very powerful man. When he finds out that the chief of police, the one he had a deal with, had a daughter he promised to protect her. When she asks his help... Seriously??? Are you f*** kidding me??? Why? Why? Why? I was so freaking mad when this book ended... Seriously? Mad not because the book wasn't good. On the contrary, it was perfect and that ending... Why? Oh my lord why? One minute things were in a way and then bam it turned... Like 360 degrees turn... I'm so mad... Superb plot, very well written, super engaging, super dark and mysterious. The way it started I wanted to scream, Dayum, stubborn much? These two were perfect for each other and I loved every single chapter. We have some dark stuff but also so hot as hell scenes. Oh yeah. It was another perfect mafia book and I can't wait for the next one to arrive. You heard me... The next one B.L. Mute... I'm mad... So mad at you... But I'm also super happy for the chance to read your work. Gimme the next book soon... Please... I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
The first time I saw the teaser picture of Charlie in her crown with cigar on her mouth Im hooked. I DMed B.L Mute if I could sign up to her ARC Team and as good hearted she is the exact opposite of this book she let me in.
I was just really glad I listen to my instinct. Its my first ever book of B.L Mute and I cant wait for more books from her. She is amazing and smart. Not all authors can manage to draw the images just like this book has most especially handling guns and action scenes in mafia. I love Mafia Romances I had read a lot looking forward to more actions rather than cliche romance and no one appeals on me not unlike Devious King did on me. The first time I meet The character of Charlie im inlove with her. Totally inlove. I always love cool and badass heroine. Her character compliments Teddy’s. The dynamic of the characters are cool and perfect. I love the Twin, Carl, Charlie and Teddy. Their family is not something bond by blood. Its loyalty.
As I have told you, the romance is not overdone in this book. Its more on mystery and if you the kind of reader just like me who is more interested on finding the pieces in the puzzle this is for you. Though we havent had all the answers yet. I like the feeling of being on edge. Cant put it down until you get to the bottom of it.
I was just hoping that book two will give justice to all the raise question on book one. Im so excited and riled up. I cant even wait to get a hold of the second or the rest of the books in this series ❤️. Thats how Addicted I am.
➖➖➖➖ANYTHING BEYOND THIS IS SPOLER➖➖➖
With all the talks about how beautiful the story is about I am only giving it 4 star because I struggle on keeping up the on the characters emotions and feelings. I hope B.L can work more on it. Its a little bit confusing. For example Charlie being angry for something I cant even understand why ? (Ehem about the brother stuff) and then at the same moment confesses her true feelings.
Nevertheless, it will not really affect the experience. I would still recommend you to read the book. You dont want to missed this PROMISE.

Dark, deadly, take no prisoners attitude-just a few ways to describe this marvelous mafia story.
Theodore Hale and Charlotte or Charlie Welsh, the twenty-five-year-old daughter of the ex-chief of police, formally meet six months after the murder of her father in rather unusual circumstances. This is just the first half of their story but oh, what a story it is, though!
This book intrigued me when I read the blurb summarising the storyline and my interest didn’t wane one iota during the whole story. There is plenty of drama and action to whet everyone’s attention plus enough twists in the plot to keep things unpredictable and full of excitement. I found myself going through the same emotional experiences with each character as the story unfolded.
The two lead characters, Teddy and Charlie, are a fabulous couple with incredible chemistry. I did feel sorry for Charlie being left out of the loop at times though. Mind you she is not your average shrinking violet, she is strong and determined. Talk about a smooth operator, Teddy is hot, intelligent and at times-ruthless but I did like him. Lucas and Julius Hale deserve a mention as they play an important part too. These twins are nearly as mysterious as Theodore, very different from each other and scary in their own right but again I connected to them too.
I look forward to reading the second book it is a must-read series for me.

Maybe I'm not in the right frame of mind for this type of book right now, but I was having a hard time connecting with Charlie and Teddy. There is a solid plot and I'm impressed with her writing ability, but I think Charlie and Teddy need a little more character development. Even though he has watched her for a while, I think he was too quick to turn over so much information and with her being a police chief's daughter, she hardly questioned his motives. There were a few times where I was on her side but then it seems like her personality changed again and she lost who she was. We don't know much about her at all except her age and who her father was but I'm hoping there is more clarification in book 2. The "L" word got thrown in the way too quickly for my liking too. I can definitely see them lusting after each other but saying "I love you" so soon, especially with how much she despised him at the beginning through me for a loop a bit.
Now I absolutely loved the twins and Carl. They seemed more real to me in their roles than the others and their banter made them seem more likable. There are still so many questions that have to be answered and even more after her visit to the storage unit.

This book starts out really great. This woman is at a fundraiser that her deceased police chief father supported hand she's trying to figure out if one of the attendees has Attended and is the killer of her father. For the 1st time she sees Mr. Hale but the person is not introduced and is mysterious and ends up being the head of a mafia family. After basically kidnapping her they convince her to be a bodyguard for Mr. Hale. The female character is supposed to be this really strong observant able to defend herself from all men to the extent that she is competitive with other bodyguards In the mafia. So she becomes the bodyguard to the head of the Hale mafia. So she can do things and be places other men can't be without creating suspicion. If only the author stuck with that theme this would-be and a really good book. As soon as the big Secret starts I knew right away what was going to happen and I am not really not that good at that. So for most of the book I was waiting for the plan to reveal itself and when it did I was not surprised. Also there were typical mafia scenes But they lacked the ability to transform into a romance novel scene. Ewww. Not sexy. I went on to book 2 in hope something would revive my interest but it only got worse. Bummed.
The Devious King was an exciting story that I couldn't get enough, and now I'm dying inside as I have to wait for more. Charlie is the Chief of Police's daughter, and I LOVED her bad a** self so much. After her father was murdered, she's determined to find out who did it, but she was in the path of Teddy, a mafia king, who gives her an offer that messed with her head, though there's no doubt that she's conflicted by it all. The problem becomes his lack of communication when it comes to what he's planning, and yet, she can't stay away from him because they have some very potent chemistry which won't be denied for long. Of course there's danger all around them, making for intense twists that turned my f-bomb dropping on in loud ways. I really thought I knew what was coming but I didn't know what I thought I knew leading to an ending which pushed me off the side of a cliff. So yeah, I CANNOT WAIT for more, and I believe you'll feel the same after you hit those one click buttons! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
Even though we knew what was gonna happen. I just wanted to keep on reading to see how it was gonna develop and Charlie's reaction.
The only dislike I had was that the romance developed WAY too fast. Like one minute Charlie didn't even know Teddy and the next she is telling him that she loves him. Wish the author took her time in developing their romance!
Fav Quotes:
~ "Queens never let their head fall, Monkshood."
~ " 'You know what queens do, Teddy?'
'They bring the kings to their knees.' "
~ "A true king's death, defending his queen."
~ "I'm the queen they never expected."
~ "My kingdom isn't one you find in a fairy tales. It's build on corruption, lies, and murders."
Let me first say, this is a new author to me. And secondly, I love dark and twisted tales, so a bit of Mafia calls my name! And this little tale did not let me down one bit! Although it kind of ended with a bit of a hang, I totally get it! And I only want to read more!
This little tight knit group known as the Hale Mafia, probably doesn't do things like a real Mafia would. Not that I would know, I am just a normal suburban mom, wife and nurse for funsies. . . But they sure are devious! This tale twists and turns, but Charlie takes it all in stride . . . Surprisingly confident and strong, being a police chief's daughter. So how does the offspring end up tied to the Hale Mafia, well that is part of the twist! And holy wowza, you are going to want to know! All hail the Hales!!! They are sneaky, dark, handsome, skilled, and most of all DEVIOUS (and for good reason)! So jump in the blacked out SUV and take the ride that will have you begging for more!
I really wanted to enjoy this, and there were moments where I genuinely did. This book has a lot of romance/mafia tropes that I love reading (caretaking scenes, zipper scenes, him paying attention to little details about her). However, that couldn't make up for how rushed this book was. Everything happened so quickly, there was no build up to the agreements, there was no relationship established. I think if more time was spent developing the characters, this could have been really good. I just felt that neither of them had personalities that differed in any way from stock, cardboard cutouts of your typical straight white mafia romance main characters. The sex scenes made me cringe, more than anything, and our main character was just whiny. Also, heels are badass but please find a more creative way of taking men down than kicking in the groin or standing on them with your heel 17 times in one book.
TWs: death of father (murder, before book), sexual harassment, alcohol consumption, drug addiction, recreational drug use, smoking, blood, child neglect, death of grandparents, sexism, gun use, murder
My first read from B.L. Mute and won't be the last! I enjoyed the character personalities in The Devious King, and if there's one thing I love, it's a bad ass female! Charlie was completely bad ass and was taught by her father how not only to hold her own, but to kill a man if she needed. There's just nothing sexier than a female who can kill right along with the boys. *insert evil smirk/devil emoji here* Not only was Charlie awesome, but I loved the surrounding characters as well. Even the twin's had me laughing. Hooked until the very end, and seriously, that cliffy!? Are you trying to kill me!? Gahhhh... I'm so ready for book 2 already!
I don't even know where to begin with this book. let me start off by saying that this was not my cup of tea at all. I absolutely love Mafia books, this book, however, fell short for me. Were in the Mafia world and I applaud any author who takes a chance and tries to write a mafia book, and sometimes it works but sadly this time wasn't it. Charlie's father was the police chief, and he was also murdered. Charlie has made it her mission to find her father's killer enters Theodore. Now this story takes an unbelievable turn not only does Charlie manage to cut Theodore with her car keys, but now he wants her to be one of his guards? The fact that she was able to harm him without his men ending her first or him slamming her against the wall just doesn't scream head of the Mafia to me. Also, I like my females strong, but still womanly and I feel like Charlie lacked the Womanly part. I want to love this book but I couldn't.
The Devious King, by BL Mute, has some very intriguing components that tease you into needing to know just what will be happening next. Although this series will focus on the Hale Mafia, this author provides us with a unique approach to her storytelling.
I look forward to continuing the journey with Charlie, Teddy, Luke, Jules, and Carl. As this first book laid down the foundation of the series, it is important to remember that these characters are going to help create connections that we as readers will look forward to seeing develop even more!
I need to know more about Charlie/Charlotte, and why her outlook on the world is the way it is. And I need to know more about Teddy and the secrets he is keeping. The twins are calling to me, too, so I hope to see why.
I appreciate the intrigue that BL Mute has generated and want more!!!
