My damn BL loving heart.
Yes, this is my Christmas for the year ✨

Adachi can hear what the other person is thinking when he touches them. And yes, that's not why it's creepy. It got creepy because I never thought I would go gaga over these characters this deep 🤦
I love them so much!
The chemistry is just too much to handle.
And yes, too... (Bangs my head repeatedly on my pillows because my heart is still happy! Too happy for my normal thinking comfort level🤦)
I don't know what will happen to me when I watch the series. The first episode is just too cute to handle and it's so damn accurately adapted 🤦 Save me!!!!
***Regarding the manga:
It is just too good!
One of those rare amazingly illustrated ones with amazing facial expressions and the most well-done art sequence with precise perfectly done dialogues.
Kudos to the team 💯
It's so well polished and so well presented. Damn. I wish all the manga collection to be presented like this ✨
Ahhh this was so cute 🤭 I adored them! And I love the mind reading aspect of this story, it made it so much more interesting! They have really cute chemistry I can’t wait to read more volumes!
I binge watched the show yesterday so naturally i had to read the manga too...I definitely prefer the live show but this story is so good and wholesome despite the silly premise, please give it a try (especially the live action) 🥺
Sweet and awkward 😄 Adachi, the protagonist, is given the gift of mind-reading for his 30th birthday, because he is still a virgin. This skill allows him to read the mind of the people around him, especially Kurosawa who is so good-looking that everyone seems to be dazed by his looks.
The book allows the reader to follow Kurosawa’s point of view as well in extra chapters and there is a side story with Adachi’s friend, Masato Tsuge, who likes the delivery man who in turn likes his cute cat called Udon.
This is a romantic comedy where ordinary events in life are given a magical twist because the the mind-reading aspect but its is also an implicit criticism on how society reacts to physical beauty.
There was definitely a learning curve when it came to reading this. I was messaging De'Siree on Instagram with questions like, “Wait, this book is backwards, where do I start? Do I read right to left or left to right?” It was surprisingly more difficult than I expected, but I REALLY enjoyed this book. So much so that I ended up buying a few more of her favorites.
This book was quirky and cute. It’s about a guy who has developed the power to read people’s mind through touch and he thinks it is because he’s a 30yo virgin. He ends up reading the mind of a charasmatic, good-looking guy in his office and discovers that he is attracted to him. So many adorable moments ensue, a ton of over-thinking and awkwardness, but also super sweet, swoony moments, too. I feel like this will speak to any of us who overthink every little thing when we are falling for someone. Especially when it is unexpected.
Thank you, De’Siree for this gift, it was like you gifted me a piece of yourself because I know how much you love these stories. Lovelovelovelovelove.
When Adachi hit age 30, for some reason his virginity suddenly gave him the ability to read the minds of anyone he touched. Hearing other people's thoughts tends to make his life uncomfortable and awkward, and even his attempt to pay someone to help him lose his virginity goes awry. When he arrives at his office job and sees the always perfect and handsome Kurosawa, a coworker who was hired at about the same time as him, he figures he'll just take a peek at Kurosawa's thoughts to make himself feel better. Surely a guy like that secretly has a bad personality.
Except it turns out that Kurosawa actually has a huge crush on Adachi, and suddenly Adachi has no idea how to act around him. After all, they're both guys, and Kurosawa's thoughts are kind of pervy. What if he acts on them? And even if he doesn't, should Adachi avoid him? Is spending time with him, knowing what he's thinking, like leading him on? And what if Adachi is maybe interested in him too?
I came across this after reading and enjoying another Square Enix Manga title, A Man and His Cat. The premise sounded annoying (I am not a fan of "the MC's virginity makes them special" stories), but reviews indicated that it was sweet, so I impulsively added it to a recent order.
Yeah, the premise is stupid. There's no explanation for how Adachi figured out that it was specifically his thirty years of virginity that somehow gave him the power to read minds, and he definitely wasn't wrong either - . There's a brief author's note in which this is all explained as "a whim of the goddess of love" (19) - basically, the goddess of love feeling sorry for these poor virgins and giving them telepathy so they can figure out that someone nearby is interested in them. Which I'm sure was supposed to be a cute hand-wavy explanation but just made me wince.
If you can get past the premise, the story isn't too bad overall. Parts of it made me a little uncomfortable, but the overall effect was surprisingly sweet.
First, the bits that made me uncomfortable. Adachi had lots of instances where he was unwillingly subjected to Kurosawa's thoughts and fantasies about him - other than the beginning of the book, Adachi mostly didn't touch Kurosawa on purpose, but some touches were unavoidable. Kurosawa's secret interest was pretty strong, causing Adachi to worry about his self-control, and if Kurosawa had purposely told Adachi everything he was thinking, then yeah, he'd have been coming on way too strong.
But he wasn't - as far as he was concerned, he was just nursing a secret crush. He seemed like a decent guy, and I got the impression that he'd have been horrified, embarrassed, and apologetic if he had known Adachi had been accidentally getting bursts of his thoughts and fantasies. So there's an aspect of secondhand embarrassment to this, too, with Adachi's reactions and Kurosawa's potential future embarrassment.
Anyway, Adachi struggled with how to act and whether or not to distance himself from Kurosawa. On the one hand, once he got over his worry that Kurosawa might act on his thoughts, he realized that they got along pretty well. On the other hand, he worried that he was basically using Kurosawa (who helped him out with work in order to get closer to him) and encouraging his unrequited love. Which of course started to become not so unrequited.
Art-wise, this was okay. Hardly any backgrounds, but at least relatively easy to follow, although I'm grateful that Adachi and Kurosawa had different hair color, or I might occasionally have had difficulty telling them apart. One thing I wish the author had done: made Adachi's thoughts visually different from everyone else's. Sometimes it was hard to tell which was which.
I don't know. I wish this was twice its length, because I feel like it was too short to really get a good feel for it. I'm not 100% sold on this series, but I think I might be willing to give the next volume a shot, despite my dislike of the whole "virginity confers special powers" thing.
At the moment, the "parental advisory - explicit content" stamp on the cover is misleading. There was zero explicit content in this volume. Most of Kurosawa's fantasies were limited to Adachi bashfully blushing in different outfits, and the one steamy fantasy was still pretty tame, no nudity. That said, considering the author's comments, I wouldn't be surprised if there's explicit content in later volumes.
Extras:
An author's note, a couple extra illustrations, one full-color illustration, a page of translator's notes, a brief comic-style afterword by the author, and a few chapters at the end that could either be considered bonus manga or just an extension of the main story (one of them stars Adachi's friend, but the rest are all still focused on Kurosawa and Adachi).
Second reading February 2021 In my second reread, I found that I still love this manga and I appreciate the live drama adaption of the manga even more now! I would still highly recommend this manga and I will most likely continue to reread this series often in the future!
First reading November 2020 I bought this manga because I saw pictures of the live action drama on Tumblr and I became interested in the premise, especially with the unusual name that this manga has. In the world of this manga, people get magical powers to be able to read the minds of the people that they touch if they are still a virgin at the age of 30. The main character of this book is Adachi who develops this power at the beginning of the manga and he finds out that his popular, handsome, and hard working male colleague has a crush on him and this volume is Adachi dealing with those feelings and his new super power. I really fricking love this manga. I can't wait to read the next volume and find a way to watch the live action drama. It's really light hearted and fun to read and incredibly engaging. I was in a reading slump and reading this manga has helped me pick up books again. I think I'm still in a slump but this book has increased the chances of reading more books. I would definitely recommend this manga. It's a light, fun read and will cheer you up.
Cherry Magic (the live action show) is one of my favourite things in the world. I don't know why it took me this long to read this? It's cute and I can see the show was a really faithful adaptation. What the manga has extra (imo), is this aromantic vibe I get from both Adachi and Kurosawa, which is really cool! Looking forward to reading the rest!
*Original Review 6/14/2021* ADORABLE! Such a quick read and adorable rom com. It made me so giddy. I can’t wait to read more!
*Reread 8/24/2023* *More of a 3.5* Oh wow it's been over two years since my last read no wonder my memory was a little foggy. I've fallen off reading the books as they release. I've got three unread now and I needed to refresh my memory so I could catch up.
I felt a little less giddy this time than my original review, but it is still pretty cute. It's a bunch of awkwardly comedic encounters as Adachi tries to navigate his "magical power" and his handsome, popular coworker's crush on him. I kind of love when the popular character is the one that loves the awkward unpopular character more. The way Kurosawa dotes on Adachi is pretty adorable.
i love love loveeee kuroadachi more than anything. both of them are so awkward and dorky yet endearing. i’ve watched the drama an unhealthy amount of times so i’m not surprised that i ended up loving every single minute of the manga either
The virginity thing wasn't needed (although growing up Ace has made me super-sensitive on the subject of virginity shaming/fetishizing), but overall the book was a lot more fun than I ever anticipated.
This volume 1 was sweet. Since Adachi turned 30 as a virgin, he can mind-read when he touches someone and now realizes that someone likes him. His anxiety level about this is quite high so this will all take time to develop as this series unfolds.
Fun start - I happened to find this first in the series available as e-book at my local library. Only took 30' to read. Wish my local library had more of this series available...
After watching the Japanese Live Action, the Thai Live Action and the Anime, I'm finally reading this. I don't think this story will ever get old for me.
I admit the art style isn't my favorite, but I hope I'll settle into it more as the story goes on.
This is adorable and I can't wait to read more. Being a virgin after 30 has made the MC able to read people's thoughts with a touch. How embarrassed he gets at things is cute. Also I liked the extra chapter type things at the end and how cute that kitty is!!
This premise is so funny, they are hilarious. Honestly, Adachi gives me HUGE aro vibes, I love him so much. And the 'emotionally charged pajamas' thing, please, I was screaming, Kurosawa is so delusional (further proof that you have to be a little delusional in this life, take notes).
Sadly there are very few things that I like about this first novel in the Cherry Magic series. I guess the one BIG thing I appreciated was that the author did not use sexual assault or anything related to that as the basis of this love story. Heck, even the potential lover interests makes an inner comment that he didn't want to push Adachi too far and scare him off. Now that could change in the following books but it was a really nice break from most Yaoi plot basis's.
So moving on to what I really did not like
1. You never knew what was speech dialogue, mind reading dialogue, or just random inner thoughts Did anyone else ask the question of "should this be read left to right or right to left? - because I sure did. I honestly struggled with figuring out what dialogue went to who and which type of dialogue it was. It made the read very difficult and at times frustrating because I had to go back and reread parts. Especially since Adachi seemed to react to everything whether it was spoken or mind-reading.
2. The actual story line was WAY too short So if you counted the pages that apply to the main story line and not count the story extra's - the actual manga only came out to 70 pages. There was just NOT enough plot line to actually get a sense of really anything. All we know is Adachi is 30, can read minds, and finds out that his coworker likes him It doesn't going into depth with anything and honestly there is some serious "insta-love" going on which makes no sense. Also the extra's just felt random and didn't really apply to much. They also were more pre-Cherry Magic Vol. 1 so it really through me through a loop on trying to see what they actually apply to. I wished the introductory story line was more fleshed out.
3. The art style I am not, personally, sure if I am in love with the art style. It was really great but I never really knew what the main character truly looked like because he was either in chibi form the entire time or a craze shocked look the entire time. So that was a bit frustrating. I definitely felt like this art style was more simple than to others that I read, so maybe i just need to just adjust to that.
All in all there was no big love for anything in this manga. We didn't get enough time with characters - what with the plotline only 70 pages or so. There was no fleshing out of world or characters and that is important in any genre. I am planning to pick up the second volume, when it releases in September (in the English translations), just because I am interested in the idea behind becoming a wizard as a 30 year old virgin. It really is an interesting idea, so hopefully it will pick up in both plot and less confusion in the next volume.
SO WHOLESOME AND HILARIOUS! I think I will need to inhale this series ASAP. It's also really refreshing to read a cute queer book featuring very-much-adult men; little angst, a lot of things to relate to regarding the tedium of adulting, without taking away the sweetness of budding love.
