I wanted to read this as soon as I heard of it - it has magic and is a book in translation which I am always hoping to see more of in the U.K.
The story follows Penelope, a young girl with grey hair and a strange smell of smoke that follows her everywhere she goes. She lives with her mother and grandmother in a red and green 'dragon' house and all she knows about her father is that he died many years before.
Her life is turned upside-down when she overhears a conversation between her mother and

Minu üheksa-aastasele minale oleks see raamat meeldinud. Kindla peale. Natuke nõidumist, natuke leekivpunaseid juukseid, natuke lendamist ja natuke hinge kinni hoidmist. Kõike just täpselt ühe pikema õhtuse lugemise jagu.

Penelope and her mother and Granny Elizabeth live in a well-loved cottage in the English Countryside. Penelope's father left the family a long time ago, but promised to always provide for the family. When her mother is injured in an accident and has to spend a long time in the hospital recuperating, Penelope wakes up one morning to find her normally gray hair a brilliant red, her energy restored, and the omnipresent smell of smoke gone. Her friends, Tom and Pete,

Meine Meinung:

All the Colors of Magic by Valija Zinck is a truly magical book! Penelope is a fantastical character living in a fantastical world!

Diving into the story, we find Penelope who is a girl with gray hair and the ability to hear what people will say to her before they say it. She doesn’t understand her ability but has accepted it as a part of her. With her father passed away, her mother and grandmother

ALL THE COLORS OF MAGIC by Valija Zinck

Penelope is a 10 year old girl with gray hair and the faint smell of smoke trails behind her wherever she goes. She lives a normal life with her mother and Granny Elizabeth. Well, aside from hearing things before they are said and the rain that falls on her birthday each year, that is not actually wet!

In this magical adventure, we follow Penelope, whose grey hair has suddenly turned red and who has just discovered that the absent father she`s never known was a wizard and she has magic too. This is the story of her learning about her new gift and searching for her father, and there`s something about the writing style that reminded me of reading authors like Enid Blyton and E. Nesbitt, as it has such a cosy, nostalgic feel to it. I also really liked the worldbuilding and the different elements ...more

This one was a 3.5 for me, and I will be eager to read the author's next books. Eleven-year-old Penelope Gardener is different from her peers. After all, she has gray hair, always smells like smoke, and August 13, her birthday, is always a rainy day. As might be expected, she's curious about her father who is absent from the scene, but her mother refuses to discuss him. Penelope's mother becomes even more upset when his occasional missives seems dismissive and contain very little money. But when ...more

This was a bit of a frustrating read for me. Fell in love with the cover, was intrigued by the synopsis... yet slightly unpleasantly surprised about the actual content. I ended up also enjoying this book, (there's a lot of quirky magic, the protagonist is very likeable) but it's just not put together well enough to be one of those children's books one can not outgrow. Adult characters were often not very believable, the pacing of the overall story wasn't quite right. But there were still enough ...more

Mõnus fantaasiajutt, mis on haaravalt kirjutatud. Penelopiga juhtub igasuguseid asju, mis on kohati naljakad, kohati

This novel puts a decidedly oddball spin on magic. The idea that it’s rooted in red hair (pun intended) is funny and cute. Having a road that actually talks to you and can speed you on your journey is novel, too; don’t you wish you could do that?

Penelope’s hair takes her on a wild adventure as she learns to master her newfound powers, negotiate the road and track down her long-departed father. It’s a charming story but decidedly geared for the younger set. Readers who like reading about spunky

What did you like about the book? All the Colors of Magic is a delightful fantasy about a girl who discovers she is more than she thinks she is. Living with her mother, grandmother, and mysterious cat in a house that resembles (to her) a dragon, ten year old Penelope learns that she is capable of amazing feats – and – that the father who her mother once loved so ardently may not actually be dead. As she comes into her power she sets off to discover the truth and right a wrong. A fine adventure ...more

Enjoyed this magical fantasy very much! Penelope is different than any of her peers. Her father has been absent for years. When she wakes up one morning with flaming red hair instead of the dull gray she's had for as long as she can remember, life as Penelope knows it is about to change forever. Will recommend this entertaining title to my library's schoolage fantasy lovers.

Great story! The characters are easy to love: especially Penelope. When I first began I thought it was set in a time long ago but it is actually set in modern day. I loved that it wasn't too modernized and that Penelope enjoyed the outdoors and the forests. It was truly enjoyable to read and I hope everyone can get a chance to grab this treasure. It even has some adventures as well as twists.

Tore, aga lõpp läks liiga kiiresti. Oleksin tahtnud, et seegi oleks alguse põhjalikkusega lahti kirjutatud. Ehk on see jäetud nõnda, et saaks järje kirjutada.

This book was completely adorable. It even had a few twists and turns that kept it exciting. I would be thrilled if it became a series, but it's still fantastic on its own.
