From the bestselling author of Girl Code, Cara Alwill Leyba delivers Girl on Fire —the long-awaited follow up fans have been waiting for.The self-publishing queen started this conversation four years ago with Girl Code, her ode to women and their power, a book so successful that it has been translated in seven languages and continues to make a major impact on the world. Girl On Fire builds on this concept and shows you how to blaze your own trail immediately. You don’t need permission from anyone to live fearlessly and start living your dream. As an early voice in the female-driven movement, Cara continues to be a leader in the space, liberating women to trust their intuition and create their own opportunities. She empowers her readers to stop waiting for their big break and, instead, to publish their own books, start their own podcasts, host their own panels and design their own clothing lines; whatever their desires are. From the would you be if you stopped following *their* rules? What would you create if you create if you had nothing holding you back? Now that women entrepreneurs are banding together in sisterhood and realizing the importance of collaboration over competition, it's time to take things to the next level. It's time to rise up, together, and challenge the status quo. It's time to question the way things have been done in the past, to write our own rules, and do life and business OUR way.The world needs us, as women, to utilize our voices now more than ever. We must step into our power and we must let nothing hold us back.Business is changing rapidly, and there has never been a better time to choose yourself. Gone are the days of waiting to be chosen by an agent, a record label, a company, or a publisher.Successful entrepreneurs don't wait for their "big break" —they create it. They don't wait to be featured in a magazine, or picked up by a publisher, or given a chance to speak on a stage. They promote themselves on platforms they create, they self-publish their own books, they launch their own podcasts, they create their own events and build their own stages. Now is the time to show up for ourselves. We all have the ability to design a life and career beyond our wildest imaginations without permission, selection, or validation. Girl on Fire will show you how to do it.This book is for every woman who has had a vision that others might not understand. It's for every woman who is sick and tired of playing by the rules. It's for every woman who has known she was meant for more and has waited far too long for someone to give her the permission she thought she needed.
I'm a guy, I read this book. It was free with Kindle Unlimited, the reviews were amazing and even though it's geared towards women, why not read it, especially since almost all of my co-workers are women and a large majority of my business is with women.
It gets a 3.5 stars if I could, at just under 80 pages, it's a quick 1-2 hour read depending on your pace. There's some good lines that can be pulled out of this and the questions that you're asked to write down and answer later are helpful for those who are looking to strike out on their own.
I found a lot of this book to be self serving though, full of self accolades, consistently reminding the reader that Cara has sold X number of books and while most self published books make $X she made $xxx from it. I fully support someone being proud of their accomplishments, I think it could have been done a few ways.
While she does quote Gary Vaynerchuk (and many others) pretty early in the book, later on she mentions taking evening classes to be a life coach while still working at MTV (a fact that seems to be on every 5th page) and even working on her side-projects while in the MTV offices. The culmination is that she's grown her side-business large enough to finally take the jump and leave MTV and make the side-project the full time job. This has been one of Gary Vee's biggest battle cries for at least they last 5-6 years, maybe longer. Quit watching sports, playing video games and watching YouTube for pleasure and hustle & grind.
One of maybe the best lessons to be pulled from the book is the few pages on reducing and removing oneself from digital and social media, slowing down the conversations with friends who maybe should be acquaintances.
I don't know what the book costs, at the price I paid (free) it was very much worth my 2 hours of read time, although anything more than a few bucks I'd be cautions of spending it. It does feel like much of this content could have been split into a dozen blog posts or YouTube videos, but Cara decided instead to self publish to (again remind everyone) her 9th book.
Reading any of Cara’s books feels like spending time with one of your best friends, receiving the pep talk of a lifetime and being cheered for as you take action.
Girl On Fire doesn’t fail this feeling.
In this book, Cara’s flame is so strong and bright, it’s sure to light up any reader’s Fire so that they can pass the flame forward and literally light up the world.
This book is for women seeking to make massive pivots in life. Whether entrepreneurs or stay at home moms, there is a message for everyone.
I especially love and appreciate that it’s a book one can INTERACT with by having space to write, responding to thought provoking questions and quotes to highlight and live by.
Looking forward to constantly referring to this book and sharing with my book club!
She publishes her own books and is a great advocate of women supporting each other! I have enjoyed reading 2 books by her back to back. Couldn't put them down.
Quick Read Pep-Talk to Nudge You from Staying stuck
I download and read this book in one evening. As an entrepreneur discouraged by the COVID-19 craze and it’s potential effects on my business and personal brand, this book could not have come at a better time. Cara reminds me to show up with my gifts as someone who looks forward to the best case scenario. It’s midnight as I finish the book and I can’t wait to dive the F*ck back into my business in the morning. P.s. Cara is super awesome. I did see her speak at Summit of Slay as mentioned in the book and was surprised that she did actually hang out and after partied with all of us aspiring entrepreneurs. Most def a fan! —@cassie.marie.b on IG
Even though it’s been just over a year since I attending this book signing event of Cara’s at The LitBar, it’s meant to be that I am just now wrapping up this book.
Inspiring but also putting the fire underneath you to ask yourself the questions like “why not me?” And get out of our limiting beliefs.
If you often find yourself, your fears getting in the way of your success, pick up this book to begin blazing your own trail.
I appreciate how encouraged I felt by the end of this!
I have reread this in times I'm doubting myself in business. I look for a chapter and take a listen. While it may seem like a simple book, it's empowering. Especially when you don't have female entrepreneurs in your immediate circle. It makes you feel a little less crazy for chasing after your dreams. So thank you Cara for writing this book because it lights that spark in me a little brighter in the moments I am hesitating to move forward.
Absolutely inspiring! I loved that there was questions and space for ideas. It feels like she’s talking to you through the book. I read it in four hours and just felt so charged and ready to take on anything!
I think this is a good motivational book for women looking to improve their brand, whatever that may be. I definitely took some pointers out of it along the way & looking forward to using some of those pointers in everyday life.
My first "Self Help" book I've read fully and mainly because it was a gift which ironically, the act gave me just as much inspiration as the book did. Someone heard me struggling and thought to help by supplying me with a self motivating book that was highly rated on Amazon. I guess the thought of someone wanting me to better myself through words and by generous means made me comforted, and so I actually finished the book out of gratitude? Or do people usually finish self help books front to back?
Not much to say about the book but as someone mentioned before, its basically 2 hours worth of a pep talk. Its all true though, what she writes about. Stuff we already know just need to be reminded of sometimes (if you don't get it from therapy like I do lmao). This would be empowering for women, or anyone, who felt they were stuck and in a negative space. I personally have been in the process of overcoming such so it was basically repeating my new head mantras lol.
I still prefer novels/memoirs the like... self help and such I think I'd prefer to listen to on podcasts or TED talks if I ever felt the need and for smaller amounts of time. But as I said before, the act of giving someone a book like this is more memorable but maybe thats just my love language.
Made it to page 90 and just had to stop. I appreciate Cara’s take on being a feminist and trying to empower women all over the world. However, this book was so self congratulatory, and honestly read like performance based women-empowerment. There aren’t actual strategies behind her writing that she shares with her audience, and a lot of it seemed out of touch. I don’t think she considers the real struggles that a lot of women face such as poverty, being a single parent, being in abusive relationships, and patriarchal socialization, but she continues to push the narrative of being a “girl boss” despite whatever challenges one might face in life.
Aside from the multiple typos (self published, as she stated 100+ times) this read was subpar, and I couldn’t even make it through half of the book.
* 3.5 "Something clicks when we speak positively about our dreams. We begin moving toward them with confident action. We don't consider doubt, because it doesn't exist any longer. We create our new reality. And that reality is filled with optimism, faith, and momentum."
I picked up Girl On Fire on a snowy Saturday and finished it in one day (well, the book is less than 200 pages). I liked how Cara talked about her personal experience and it didn't really feel like a book filled with Instagram quotes. I found it very easy to read and it was inspiring to read about women who worked hard and started businesses of their own.
I wish the book was a little longer. However, I liked how Cara put the self-reflect notes after every chapter. Looking back in a couple of years, It will be fun to see where my mind was at.
I recommend it if you're looking for an easy and empowering read to enjoy while relaxing during your weekend.
Absolutely amazing book. I normally dont read books like this, but this one I like.
I felt that it is not like the others book where the authors shares simply how they've made in life and simply give a few advices to others. Cara's strugles in life to are described very realistic and in such humble way. And through those stugles she aims to inspire other women.
There are many situations that Cara describes about womens' competition and shaming that are happenning. I quite agree that with this we are only putting ourselves down. As she says there is seat for everyone at the table, and that is why we need to stop the competition and try to support ourselves. Women keep on saying that they are suppressed by men, but the truth is that woman suppression on a woman is very much alive as well. Sadly.
You cant be a victim and a success at the same time is the chapter I liked the most.
"Girl on Fire" is a testament to Cara Alwill Leyba's unwavering commitment to empowering women to thrive, rise above challenges, and conquer their aspirations. Her transformative words leave an indelible mark on readers, igniting a spark of motivation and courage that lingers long after the final page. Whether a woman seeks professional growth, personal development, or simply a renewed sense of purpose, "Girl on Fire" stands as a beacon of light, guiding them towards embracing their true power and becoming the best version of themselves.
My favorite passage from the book “Being a Best case scenario girl doesn’t mean you don’t have to put in the work . I have seen a trend lately where there seems to be this glamorization of manifestation . There is an enormous amount of hard work , repetitive inspired action and grind that goes into creating your ideal life .”

I'm such a fan of hers. I've been following her since her first two books came out and I've been buying her books and listening to her podcast ever since. Lately like the past month I've been feeling quite down and super hard on myself. This past week actually proved to be emotionally and mentally draining for me. I pick up this book (my kindle to be exact) and finished reading this book. I couldn't put it down. It was just what I needed to force me to get real with myself. I highly recommend people buy this book. I'm considering buying a hard copy and giving it as a gift to friends. You need this book
K, in case you need a serious reminder that everyone has a place to shine in this universe. How to unleash your power, and laugh a couple of times along the way... this is your book. It’s a really fast read, it’s fun and up-beat (honestly, I could picture the author jumping up and down like a champagne unicorn). These are the books you grab on to when you had “one of those weeks”. She’s not saying anything out of this world (but, who is?). I strongly recommend reading this with Ariana Grande/Beyoncé/Lizzo type of music in the back... and girl you are going places! :) better than a coffee in the morning! :)
Fun read, but not new if you’re already successful
This will be a great read for the woman who’s afraid of risks, unsure about providing her own emotional, mental and financial stability, and seeks longingly at the greener shade of grass, because what Cara writes in this book is absolutely true, and what I personally embraced to bring me success in life. Plus, it’s short and straight to the point which won’t trigger reader’s ADD.
That said, women who are already successful (especially those who are entrepreneurial) and seeking an extra oomph to her efforts should pass on this book.
An enjoyable motivational fast read. Having never read her other books it was all new information to me but I could see others others who have read her other works perhaps frustrated that the content is the same. From her own statements in the book she shares that she has shared many of these stories and ideas before. However the message is a good one and since readers are not always linear I believe this to be a forgivable trait that occurs with many motivational writers. Some Deepak Chopra books have the same issue for example. In the end it is more important to get the message of preserverance and changing the environments of women from competitive to collaborative out there.
I love a good inspirational story but this book is more than that. Yes, there were real life stories but Cara provided thought provoking questions so you can explore yourself to ultimately move in the direction you want in life. It's empowerment as its finest and I recommend anyone to take a few hours to read Girl on Fire. It doesn't matter what your background is, your current level of success or your future goals - you will walk away ready to change your life. Thank you, Cara!
This book helped me realize some of my downfalls and how I can change my mindset and overcome them. My favorite chapter was 10: It’s never too late to be who you secretly dream of being. Lot of good stuff in this chapter. So many great inspirations in this chapter and I really enjoyed reading about other women who were successful later in life.
My one critique is that the book needed another edit. There were a few sentences that were missing words or had misspellings that altered the meaning of the word. Nothing terrible. Those things just momentarily took me out of the book.
This book was a great uplifting story about being a women and owning your power. Cara Leyba takes a deep dive into taking risks, owning your identity, and following your dreams. I loved seeing the impact Cara has taken through her career and also her vulnerability through it all. She also includes journal prompts that allow you to take some time each chapter and really center yourself and determine what you need.
As someone who stretches herself extremely thin, I love the chapters where Cara tells you to take care of yourself and value your time.
