Jacques Pasquet is a French writer, storyteller, and performer who has written many books for both kids and adults, including My Wounded Island, a picture book about climate change in the Arctic. He was a lecturer in the Department of Literary Studies at the Université du Québec à Montréal for many years. He lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Vorweg: Ich kann euch das Kind definitiv ans Herz legen und der Empfehlung ab 8 Jahren nur zustimmen. Bereits der Anfang hat mich begeistert, denn es stellt direkt klar, dass wir Teil der Natur sind und wieso die Bäume eigentlich unsere besten Freunde sind. Thema CO2 und Sauerstoff. So soll das Buch Kindern erklären, wieso eine gesunde Umwelt für uns so wichtig ist. Ein Thema, welches für Kinder oft nicht so einfach zu verstehen ist, aber umso wichtiger, dass sie damit in Kontakt kommen. Schließlich sollte der Umweltschutz einer unserer höchsten Prioritäten sein.

Das Buch ist in verschiedene Themenbereiche eingeteilt: Wasser, Luft, Boden. Energie, Klima und Zukunft. Daher kann man sich super ein Thema aussuchen, welches man mit den Kindern genauer betrachten möchte. Die einzelnen Kapitel sind sehr ausführlich und behandeln Themen wie z.B. Wasserverbrauch, die Atmosphäre, Klimawandel, Luftqualität und Luftverschmutzung, erneuerbare Energien oder auch Vergiftung des Bodens. Ihr seht also, es ist ein weites Spektrum an Themen enthalten. Die einzelnen Bereiche werden ausführlich und mit kindgerechten Beispielen erläutert. Sie nutzen Beispiele, mit denen Kinder etwas anfangen können. Die Umwelt wird zum Beispiel als Kinderzimmer bezeichnet, welches sich stetig verändert. Die Illustrationen sind richtig schön und helfen sehr dabei, die Themen besser zu verstehen. Sie wirken nicht überladen und unterstreichen den Inhalt sehr gut.

Trotz allem würde ich aber hier die klare Altersempfehlung ab 8 Jahren einhalten, denn trotz all der super Erklärungen sind die Themen komplex und anspruchsvoll. Das Buch hat wahnsinnig viel Inhalt und wirft mit Zahlen und Fakten um sich, was für jüngere Kinder vermutlich kaum greifbar ist. Ich denke auch ab 8 Jahren sollte ein Erwachsener das Kind begleiten und mit ihm / ihr über Themen sprechen.

Fazit
Das Buch trägt einen wichtigen Beitrag dazu bei, den Kinder das Thema Umwelt und Umweltschutz näher zu bringen. Es umfasst viele komplexe Themen und erklärt diese auf kindliche Art und Weise. Dennoch ist es auch sehr viel, was ein Kind hier verstehen muss, weshalb die Altersempfehlung ab 8 Jahren eingehalten werden sollte. Es gibt einen guten Überblick über wichtige Themen und reißt sie so weit an, dass Kinder hier ein gutes Grundwissen aufbauen können. Besonders wenn Themen wie diese in der Schule besprochen werden, kann man das Buch super als Ergänzung nutzen. Am besten begleitet man das Kind beim Lesen, da sie hier doch wirklich sehr viel verstehen und verarbeiten müssen. Die Illustrationen sind richtig schön und helfen den Inhalt besser zu verstehen. Insgesamt eine klare Empfehlung!

Interesting book about the environment. What it is, how it works, why is it in danger and what can we do to help. All is good but a bit childish in the approach, some enjeux are over simplify in my opinion, I also would have like pretty and real pictures of our planets instead of just drawing. Not perfect, it still address important issues that need to be discuss. Good but could have been better!

Jacques Pasquet takes young readers through all of the elements that make up our big beautiful world. He carefully explains why things like water and air are so important and what is threatening these essential elements of life. There are beautiful illustrations and infographics to move the reader through all the information and there is a lot! The whole book is a call to action to protect the planet with concrete steps we can all take to ensure we keep the water, air and soil clean and a way to ensure a clean tomorrow. There is a fantastic glossary at the back to better understand some of the more sophisticated terms in the book. I love how the author uses the scientific terms throughout the book and keeps the text straightforward and easy to understand. It’s a fabulous book to have in classrooms and school libraries and for all the future Autumn Peltier’s and Greta Thunberg’s who are going to continue to fight for the planet

I really liked this book! The illustrations are bright and eye catching and the organization of the chapters really makes a lot of sense. Each chapter introduces an aspect of the environment that humans have an impact on (soil, water, climate, air, etc) and tells you what it is, why it is important, the threats to it through actions and pollution and the steps that we can take in order to reduce the damage we are doing. The book is written in a way that (unless the child reading it is a very sensitive soul ) doesn't come across as accusatory. There's no sense of "if you are doing this you are a horrible person!" which I feel like happens all too much in environmental focused books- even those for kids.

My only true issue with this book- which might have been because of the digital nature of the book- is that some of the fonts were hard to read on the background colors chosen (black on blue etc.)

This book provides a straightforward explanation of what our environment is made up of and how it helps us survive, but it also provides information on how we can help it continue to sustain us. great to share with school-age children and above.
