Them that Ask No Questions
Brighton, 1871. Alice is adjusting to life in Brighton's slums and it bain't easy. There's no more time for play, it's all about making the weekly rent to avoid the workhouse. When the local constabulary get involved, life is about to get a whole lot more complicated.

Didn't have much to show for it at the end of the road, except for some great experiences, a host of friends, and a spoonful of English. Being fundamentally lazy, tried to make a living with the language skills of the latter, rather than learning new tricks or developing fresh skills. I.e. secondary school teacher of English at various Dutch secondary schools. However, my insistence that education should be fun in order to be effective didn't really fit in with a system that is geared to paperwork rather than pupils.

What a story!
I loved Rottingdean Rhyme and this book was just as amazing. I can't wait to read more of Alice's adventures.

A highly engaging tale that explores a day in the life of an 11 year old girl risking being taken to the workhouse for delivering contraband. It takes you through the harsh, nitty gritty backstreets of late 19th century Brighton in an alternative steampunk themed history, as she dodges and weaves her way out of trouble.
The author does a lot of research about the history, folklore and language of that period and threads it into the story, bringing it to life. Loved it :-)
