Michael Rosen, a recent British Children’s Laureate, has written many acclaimed books for children, including WE'RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, and I’M NUMBER ONE and THIS IS OUR HOUSE, both illustrated by Bob Graham. Michael Rosen lives in London.
The classic picture book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury is evoked in this pair of concept board books. Using art from the We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, along with lovely wildlife illustrations from Mat Williams, the books provide items, mostly from nature, that a young child can easily identify. Each letter or number has an indented “finger trail” which a child can follow to understand how it is written. Fans of Oxenbery’s art will recognize the family, dog and other images from Bear Hunt. ABC shows the first letter of each item, including the onomatopoeia “zZZ” for snoring for the letter Z. 123 has simple rhyming text. Both books end with a bear. Kids will love these.
Thanks to the kiddo who randomly threw this book in my cart after storytime when we were cleaning up... xD
I liked the finger tracing very much, but as always, I'm disappointed that "xylophone" is always the word chosen to represent 'x,' just because it's at the beginning of the word--I get that it's good for uniformity (all of the other words start with the letter they represent)--but maybe more books should showcase the extremely common way we use 'x' in English...? Like "box" or something?
I'll hop off of my silly soap box now lololol
ALSO, while the art is cute and I liked the tracing, there's no real connection to We're Going on a Bear Hunt aside from the obvious marketing strategy. 'B' isn't even for "bear," haha. ;)
Based on We're Going on a Bear Hunt, this little tome help to teach ABCs with finger trails and images of things encountered on a forest walk. So cute.
good spaces for tracing each letter and a picture of something to go with each, but we're trying doing upper case letters before lower case and these are all lowercase. Maybe check it out again when we are learning lower case letters.
