Rate this book

Roger Federer truly is a legend! This book speaks so much to not only the champion he has become but also to his character. If you are a tennis fan this is a must read!!!

I'm going to be gentle in my critique for three reasons: 1. The English version of this book is a translation, and it would be unfair to criticize Stauffer for words he himself did not write; 2. The book is unquestionably well-researched; 3. This is a book about my favorite athlete who has ever lived and I cannot, in good faith, hold the author to the standard set by his subject. That would be cruel as it is, in my eyes, impossible.

I did enjoy many aspects of this book and I certainly learned some things. If you're a Roger Federer fan, I don't think you'd regret the effort.

But it remains to be said that I had trouble with many elements of this book. For one, I feel it was written too early. I cannot help but to wonder about the motives of the author to publish this on the eve of Federer's retirement, a time that did not allow Federer to contribute in a meaningful way. Why not wait a few months or a year? Was there fear on Stauffer's part that someone else would steal his thunder? Why intentionally leave it incomplete? We all knew Federer would have a send-off for the ages (he did), and Stauffer knowingly dismissed this powerful chapter by writing this when he did.

The book was very disorganized. I understand that Stauffer was trying to avoid the temptation to make this a simple chronological timeline of events. But it was far too jumpy. Had I been a casual observer of Federer as opposed to one of his most voracious fanatics, I doubt I could have followed this. The organizational style created repetition at times and created a barrier to a truly immersive reading experience.

My final critique (besides some editorial bits that I found a bit off-putting) is that I just didn't find Stauffer to be a very compelling storyteller. Thorough, yes. Detailed, absolutely. Impressive in his breadth of anecdotes and facts, certainly. But this is a book about Roger Federer! The world is fascinated by him. He remains one of the most popular figures in the world, even outside of Tennis and Sport. He is adored by millions. I wanted to see that kind of passion in these pages, and the style didn't bring that home. And to be completely fair to Stauffer, that's merely a critique of personal preference. The author's style is one of journalistic nature, a style I generally have no issue with. I just didn't find that it fit with a book about a man as great as Federer. I'd have preferred a true biographer as opposed to a journalist.

In conclusion, worth the read if you're a fan of Tennis or of Federer. No doubt. Just don't expect this particular book to be captivating or life-changing.

O trajeto e a carreira do tenista helvético falam por si. E eu?

"It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice."

I don't read a whole lot of biographies, but this one is pretty good. I enjoyed learning about Federer's training and upbringing, and the challenges of his early career and late comeback, including the lead up to everyone's favourite grand slam final, the 2017 australian open. But I knew most of it already, and also there was too much here about marketing and becoming a global icon etc, which was all a bit wanky.

Ah, well.

Hey, lemme know when Hsieh Su Wei gets a biography. Now there's a tennis player I wanna read about. Did you know there was a stretch of time where she didn't know how to apply to play at tournaments? Am I misremembering that? Absolute queen.

I think there are far too many people badged, given the title of legend, hero, superstar, in actual fact, there are probably less than a handful of people that can be actually tagged with any of these words. But Roger Federer clearly is one of those. I admire everything he stands for, does for himself, family and the world of Tennis, and the world itself, if I could only be 1% of what he is, I will be a good and better person. A true legend

Roger Federer is my biggest idol. If is there anyone on earth that I would like to be is him. So my opinion here is always biased. In any case this book is very good. The readibility is very good and easy. For someone that has followed his tenis career in detail there is not many things that are new. At least the professional one. So the book is very good for us to know 2 things. How was his life from birth to the day he won the first grand slam with 23 years old. And how was his life as an adult on a personal perspective. The reader gets to understand better how his team and family used to work. What is behind his foundation.
The one thing I would like to see in this book that it's not there is the details of his preparation as an elite athlete. It would be nice to understand how was his practice routine. His schedule preparation. Details like massages, nutrition, practices, physical condition and sleep. But overall amazing book for any sports lover and for any RF fan.
I finish by emphasizing two sentences. Bill Gates said about Roger that the day he retires would be sad but we would all be in piece because we know Roger would be making the world a better place with his future actions. And I am in piece. After all, Like Roger also said, we all can dream and achieve our dreams. So he has been and he still is for sure a true inspiration for anyone's future.

The author is waaaaay to much biased towards Federer. It's more like an ode brought to him within an entire book. Not to say that's, to some extent, a duplicate of the first book. One might think that the author decided to write new stuff, given the 2017 comeback, but it's too little presented starting with that period.

The author relentlessly jumps back and forth through time, presenting events from Federer's beginnings to some that are closer to the present, making it hard to draw a chronological axis and put them on it. I believe that the reader's intention to do that would just vanish.

To some extent, it's understandable and maybe expected to have such an approach when writing about your idol, favourite athlete (or whatever Federer is to the author), but, as a reader, as a person having my own personality, I want to make my own and honest opinion on Roger Federer - the man, so the writing should've been more objective.

" Mats Wilander

An interesting piece on one of the most impressive athletes in the history, written through the lenses of a journalist very close to Federer and his close circle. Exhaustive in terms of portraying RF as not just unparalleled tennis champion, but a family person, philantrophist, an activist for the future betterment of tennis as a discipline and community of professionals. A person with brilliant memory, devotion and obsessive passion for everything he gets involved in.

Easy reading! It is always great to learn about high performance athletes, their discipline and struggles. Federer is great inside the course and outside the sport. It is a good book if you re looking for self-confidence, mindfulness and emotion’s management. I found it a bit appealing at some points, but it is quite normal in this kind of biographies.

Książka napisana wartkim językiem i dlatego szybko się ją czyta. Federer to utalentowany tenisista z ogromnym dorobkiem.
