In Favored, Blessed, A Fresh Look at Mary of Nazareth, Mary takes her well-deserved place among the great men and women of Scripture. Not only Jesus’s mother, Mary of Nazareth is also a model disciple of our Lord, demonstrating how to navigate painful life circumstances through her disciplines of treasuring and pondering. Has God asked you to do something that seems impossible? Has your heart been pierced? Your life upended? Your choices misunderstood? Have you lost a child, literally or figuratively? Slow down and journey with Mary through daily meditations, reflection questions, and guided prayers as we examine what it means to be favored, blessed, and pierced. Whether you are married or single, male or female, a parent or not, you will relate to her humanity and strong example often disguised in Christmas pageants and Easter plays.
I have read about Mary since childhood. It has been easy for me to skim over her life thinking I am already familiar. Eva Burkholder invited me to dig deeper into Mary's culture, what she might have been thinking, and how Mary's life can influence mine. Each of the three words in the title had great impact on me as I worked through the chapters. I finished the book not only learning about Mary but also with action steps that I want to take in my own life.
What a blessing to read this book during the Christmas season to learn more about Mary, the mother of Jesus. I learned so many things I never knew before, and I also grew in my faith. A very well written, beautifully designed book by Eva Burkholder. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about Mary of Nazareth.
