One Great Thing

Tony Dixon works in an unglamorous backwater of a London bank. Trapped in a job he hates, with a girlfriend he doesn’t deserve, he’s drinking too much and wondering how to escape. One day a letter arrives which should bring him the freedom he craves. Instead, it leads him into a sordid world of Dark Money, tax-dodging plutocrats, crooked journalists and a foul-mouthed peer of the realm. Can he find redemption and win back the women he loves? All it would take is One Great Thing…

Russell Meagher was born in West London in 1962. He studied Economics at the University of Southampton and then joined the insurance brokers, Willis Faber, as a graduate trainee. After seven years at Willis, he took a career break and spent the next 14 months travelling the world with his girlfriend, Lucinda. On their return, they married, moved from London to Sussex and had three daughters. Russell joined the global insurer AIG in 2002 and was there during the events of 2008 when AIG's ill-judged foray into Credit Default Swaps allowed the US government to use it as a conduit to bail out the Wall Street banks. Russell left the industry in 2015 to fulfil his lifelong ambitions to play in a band and write a novel. He now plays bass for Massive Rug Sale, the greatest rock 'n' roll band in Mid-Sussex, and One Great Thing is his first novel. He believes passionately in addressing income inequality and the erosion of public services by stopping the gaming of the tax system and preventing the use of offshore tax havens. This is one of the themes of One Great Thing. He is now focusing on his music career with the forthcoming 'make or break' gig at the Cock Inn, Wivelsfield in 2020
