RIO RUIDOSO is the first pure western I have ever read, and its my dads fault I hadn't read one until now. (Sorry, Dad.) He loves a good western and had shelves of them when I was growing up (now virtual shelves of them), but HIS westerns didnt appeal to me. The graphic shoot em up, hang em up, and he-ing & she-ing Dad gushes about always solicit an eye-roll. The cowboys seem like cardboard cutouts: loners who are introspective and smarter and more cunning than the average Joe; and the women ...more

Ive been bedazzled by Westerns since I watched reruns of the old shows Paladin, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza. I dont know if the younger generation is aware of just how much this time period sparked the American imagination. In a more modern age when people were increasingly relying on the ease technology brought their lives, our culture craved a simpler time. Of course, it wasnt all guns and roses in the Old West. Something author Preston Lewis continues to portray in his latest novel, Rio Ruidoso.

"If it weren't for thieves, weeds, and cockleburs,...Lincoln County would be about as near heaven as you can get on earth."

Rio Ruidoso is a mesmerizing glimpse into the Old West and one man's quest for peace and happiness through homesteading, ranching, and farming in the New Mexico Territory. What Wes Bracken finds instead is violence and betrayal around every corner. Fortunately, Wes also finds love, solidarity, camaraderie, courage, and a future that while not without trouble looming on the

In January 2020, Melany and I stopped in Lincoln, New Mexico on our way back to Texas. I have been through Lincoln many times, stopped a few times, but never went to the museums dealing with the history of the town and the infamous Billy the Kid. It was a Monday and thankfully the museums were open. The coffee shop, however, was not.

Immediately, as I began reading Rio Ruidoso I was transported back to the historic Wild West of Lincoln. It is easy seeing Lincoln through the words of author

It was easy to fall into a comfy chair and let the author transport me back to the Wild West. The whiskey flowed while danger lurked just off in the distance. I instantly liked Wes and his take charge attitude. What he thought would be a nice place to live with his brother turns out to be a bit on the shady side with trash everywhere and a ceiling that shows off the brilliant stars at night. It seems like his brother may have made some bad decisions which will put Wes in a difficult position. ...more
