Nobody does adorable board books quite like Cottage Door Press, especially adorable Halloween board books. Spooky Little Kitten is another sweet, charming, and beautifully illustrated addition to their seasonal library. The story follows Mama Cat as she searches through a happy haunted house on Halloween to find her playful kitten Spooky. Little ones will enjoy the adventure of helping Mama Cat find Spooky by pointing out all the places where Spooky could be hiding, and they will love the silly, playful rhymes when Mama Cat finds humorously Halloween-y creatures like a newt in a boot and a bat in a hat instead of her mischievous kitten.
Rachel Foo’s warm, bright art is perfect for this sweet story. Her spooky creatures are friendly and playful, and the colors are perfect for Halloween but never too garish or overwhelming for tiny readers. There are lots of fun details adding to the ambience of the haunted house and small clues hinting at Spooky’s possible hiding places, giving young eyes just enough to look at to develop learning and reasoning skills. Mama Cat and Spooky are lovable characters with plenty of personality, and when they find each other at the end of the book, it’s a heartwarming scene with a lovely holiday message. This is a fun family story with adorably spooky art that little ones will love.
This is one of my favorite children's board books. I love the fun shape and the quality of the boards themselves, but the illustrations are also a nice gloss. The illustrations are beautiful and so pretty — Rachel Foo's art really brings this story to life. The writing itself is also very nice — simple but effective and I loved the rhyme scheme. It's fun to read once or even ten times, which is pretty likely when you're reading to kids! I've read it many times so far, and I'm always happy to read it one more time because the art is enjoyable and the words aren't grating to say over and over like some children's books.
So cute! Mama cat is looking for her kitten, Spooky. She searches all through the house, encountering some classic Halloween characters and scenarios. Finally they reunite in a classic surprise.
Filled with cute, colorful, and detailed illustrations.
My own little black cat often shows his bottom vampire teeth. I wish I could get a picture of him doing it next to this book.
He instantly grabbed for it, as he loves kitties. The next day, he had me read it over and over again. I love the beautifully rich illustration style and the details. Each page is packed with Halloween things. Plus, the story of the Mama Cat looking for her baby is super cute. Totally a new favorite for this mama.
