A Beginner's Guide to the Traditional Latin Mass

Rate this book
As the celebration of the classical Roman rite of Mass becomes increasingly common, this Beginner’s Guide to the Traditional Latin Mass fills a real need. This form of Mass is more elaborate and prayed in an ancient language, so those coming to it for the first time can find it bewildering and hard to navigate. Existing resources often present too much, too fast. Derya Little has provided a simple step-by-step presentation of the Mass with just enough information about the sequence, content, and meaning of its parts—at both Low Mass and High Mass—that anyone, adult or child, can follow and pray more easily. The Beginner’s Guide opens wide the doors of discovery to this inexhaustible treasure of the Church, paving the way for a fruitful lifelong engagement.

Born and raised in Turkey, my first encounter with God was through the lenses of Islam. A messy divorce and a crisis of faith later, I was an atheist teenager who knew everything.

Then the wandering began, until I finally found truth in Christianity and my home in the Catholic Church.

In the mean time I received degrees in international relations and history. Now, with a PhD in political science, I live in a small town in the American Northeast with my husband and four children, reading, writing, enjoying coffee and kissing booboos.

Our sponsor priest for our Opus Sanctorum Angelorum group, or Angel Group as we call ourselves, is celebrating 25 years as a priest with a High Latin Mass. He had his anniversary Mass approved before Pope Francis issued his Motu Proprio, Traditionis Custodes or it might not have been allowed.

Although I went to the Latin Mass for the first 7 to 8 years of my life and have been several times in the past 10 years, I am not so familiar with it as I would like to be, so this little guide is a wonderful help! Our group moderator found it since only one other lady and I had ever been to Latin Masses, the others being too young or converts.

I will definitely bring it with me to that Mass and keep it handy for any other opportunities I have to attend Latin Masses.

A quick read, but a lifetime to master!

Great little pocket book for traditional Latin mass, especially if you are new to Latin mass. It walks you through both high and low masses and I very much appreciated the pictures and explanations. Very simple to follow along with and only about 50 pages long.
