The Wiener Strikes Back

Rate this book
From the creator of the bestselling series The Last Kids on Earth! In this second installment of Cosmoe’s wild space adventures, the fearless hot-dog-selling crew take their wares to the circus only to discover things are not as they seem!

Nothing goes better with the circus than a good wiener! So, when Neon Wiener is offered a position as the official food cart for Crostini’s Cosmic Carnival and Wonder Circus Train, Humphree is over the moon. Cosmoe feels more skeptical that the offer may be too good to be true, but after he unexpectedly demonstrates incredible monster-taming skills in a heroic display, he’s hooked.

The circus-goers can’t get enough Galactic Hot Dogs, and between the death-defying acts and highly unusual employees, the carnival offers endless entertainment for Cosmoe, Humphree, and Princess Dagger. But they soon discover there’s more to the glitz and showmanship than meets the eye—in fact, the hot-dog-loving crew may be in more danger than ever before. And getting to the bottom of the circus’s secrets may mean confronting Cosmoe’s troubled past.

A very fun adventure story. Glad got a bit more back story but still feel overall that the characters could be developed a bit more. Cosmoe’s little sidekick friend just overall as well just feel a bit too powerful . Get that it is a middle grade story and the heroes are always going to make it out of situations ok but is just a tad much at time. Will be reading the next one since enjoyed this one enough to go on with the series and it is a fun series. For sure recommend for fans of Diary of A wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants and similar types of series.

Ratings scales are totally subjective and depend on expectations. My expectations with this book: 1. That it would entertain my seven year old, ✔; 2. That it would read quickly and be action packed, ✔; 3. That my seven year old would immediately ask to buy the next book in the series, ✔; 4. That it would result in my son and I having some quality reading time together, ✔✔✔. By all those measures, this was a great book.

Cosmoe the Earth Boy, Princess "Power Pants" (way less evil than Evil Princess Dagger), and Humps join a space circus. Except for this circus isn't all fun and hot dogs, actually it's a den of evil!

For real though, The Kid is going to be sad when I steal the 3rd book from her, so I can finish up the series.

This book was full of adventure as Cosmoe and his friends entire an evil space train that abducts animals and must stop it before they hurt any more people or animals. They never give up and keep slinging there hotdogs. This is a good book for kids ages 6-12 with average reading skills and it has not too many pictures and is not a comic.

A new Galactic Hot Dogs book is here, and boy it was packed with fun, adventure, action, circus, and also backstory!

If there was one thing I definitely didn’t like it would be the cover. It is a gorgeous cover, and I absolutely love it, BUT I have the first book in the old cover mode… which means I now have two mismatched books in one series, and if there is one thing that I don’t like it is when covers change in a series. I don’t care if at the end you want to redesign stuff, but please not after book 1.

Now for the book itself. It was a delight to see all the characters again, I had to get into the book though, so it took me a few pages to get all the characters in the right slots again, and to remember what and who they are. But after that? Easypeasy and I just flew through this book.
I was delighted that we see a bit of Cosmoe’s backstory, it was a very sad story though, that poor kid.
I loved that we found out a new power (or should I say talent) for Cosmoe. Even he didn’t expect it, though when we learn his past we can see where and how he got that talent.

The circus is the main theme in this book, and I really loved how it was done, and how you knew from the start something sinister was happening under that cover of happy-go-lucky. And finding out what was wrong? It was a delight. Of course who the true mastermind was after I determined something was wrong was easy. Who else could it be?

I loved Princess Dagger, she is such a fun character, and I just love how she carries around a list and is trying to do everything on it. She is also really kick-ass and does some amazing fun things.

Humphree is also a really fun character and I just love how dedicated he is to Cosmoe.

Of course there are also hot dogs, monsters, and much much more in this book.

I still love the format of the book, it is such a playful and fun way to tell a story. And the art is really great and just fits perfectly.

And yay for puns in the book title.

All in all, this was a delight and I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I would really recommend this series to everyone who is in need for a fun series with great characters and lots of space adventures.

This strange space adventure series is not my style, but fans of Captain Underpants might enjoy the silliness.

Brallier, Max The Wiener Strikes Back (Galactic Hot Dogs Book #2) 288 pgs. Aladdin (Atheneum), 2016. $13.99 Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G Violence: G

In this second book Cosmoe, the Princess, and Big Humphree have joined the circus, which travels the galaxy. Cosmoe is thrilled that he is going to be a monster tamer. But the friends discover that the alien animals in the circus are being made to mutate into monsters, and its Princesses mom, Evil Queen Dagger, who is ordering that to happen. They know they must help to save all of the alien animals, and Cosmoe has a secret past that makes up him for the task. When Humphree is turned into a mutant, Cosmoe is made to fight his best friend. In the face of overwhelming odds, the friends must do their best to survive and thwart Queen Dagger’s plans. Every single page is fully illustrated, sort of comic style.

I really like this series, the first book being my favorite, but this one is a fun read as well. I think they are just perfect for 3-5th graders who are reluctant readers or need a lower reading level book to read that features lots of illustrations to assist with comprehension. Again, I would say these would be a must-have, but the use of the word Butt is just goofy in this context and not in a good way, its just awkward and out of place. The covers are really appealing and would be a great addition to your Sci-fi collection. As a bonus for us Utah Librarians, the characters visit Utah in this book as well!
