Love in 24 Frames

Rate this book
Declan Groves is a CPA in New York City. His adult life is dictated by routine and monotony. The need to express himself, in ways his career and crippling shyness have never allowed, leads Declan to becoming an amateur stop-motion filmmaker. The problem with this—Declan is now in love with the Wandering Artist Studios receptionist, Shota Watanabe. Shota has always had a smile and engaging comment ready for Declan, but even if it’s more than casual politeness, Declan hasn’t been able to get out more than a tongue-tied sentence at a time. And a man like Shota surely has no intention of waiting forever.

So when an unexpected change to Declan’s daily schedule during Christmastime throws the two together outside of the studio, it might be the catalyst needed to explore what’s been unspoken between them. But if they’re to have a future, Declan needs to find a way to tell Shota how he feels before the magic of the holidays is behind them.

D’awwwww!
This was...delightful.
I was hoping for a sweet holiday short story and that's exactly what I got.
Declan is shy...painfully shy.
Working every evening at the studio where he rents a room, the highlight of his entire day greets him at the desk. He's been harboring a massive crush for Shota. But Shota is younger and definitely not interested in him. Right? Yeah. There's no way.
But humoring his crush won't hurt anybody.
Until...it does.
However, surprise! He finally finds his voice and courage when he needs it most.
And maybe he'll be surprised right back.

4 Holiday Hearts - Blog holiday reads with Ann!

I’ve read every single one of Poe’s advent stories and I’ve yet to be disappointed. This was a total win!

Understated and sweet, this starts with Declan - older, so so shy, and unable to make a move on his secret crush Shoto.

Cue some awkwardness and a back and forth slow burn that ended with a really wonderful HEA for these two - and just in time for the holidays!

Poe definitely has that rare talent for shorts. This is one advent that will warm you up and keep you cozy through the cold wintery days, leaving you wanting more but not at all dissatisfied!

Thanks to the author/publisher for a copy in exchange for a honest review

Ooh, I love this lovely tale of two middle-aged men who find love together. To counteract his staid job as a "stuffy, button-up accountant," 48-year-old Declan - who happens to have full sleeves of "bright and richly colored tattoos of floral mosaics covering each inch of bare skin" - rents a studio to create stop-motion video featuring puppets he has carefully crafted. Shota - "the most perfect human east of the Hudson River"- is the receptionist at the studio and the object of Declan's obsession.

Their romance is slow and tentative and there's little in the way of on-page grappling, but the chemistry absolutely sparks between Shota and Declan, and I absolutely adore how C.S. Poe writes. Here is Declan about Shota: "The lines of age were hard to pinpoint, but there was character to the muscles in his face as he smiled. Character that simply wasn't there in someone younger ...." And:
I craved human contact. It'd been a long time since I'd had anything intimate, like Shota's kisses. Anything gentle, like his caresses. But it wasn't that I needed those physical acts of appreciation from just anyone because it'd been too long. I needed them from someone my heart tripped over in return. I needed them from Shota Watanabe.
Overall, a beautifully crafted gem of a holiday novella. 5 stars and a Recommended Read for "Love in 24 Frames."

It was only 4 chapters. Cute story but it really needed to be longer. The two guys didn't have near enough time to get to know one another let alone anything else. Anyone that just wants a short romance will probably like it. There are a few kisses but that it.

There is so much promise to this book:
A great scenario and two interesting, mature characters.

However, and yes I know this is a novella, I felt that something was missing in this story. The plot felt under-developed when it could have been so much more. Getting only Declan's POV is definitely a drawback, because Shota's sudden declaration of attraction and interst seemed to come out of nowhere.

I still enjoyed reading it, but I had hoped for a little bit more.

This was a clunky story. It’s it me or the story? I think it’s the story.

It seemed like a forced conflict with a secondary character that was odd and most shoved into the story to help make the conflict.

This is the first of Poe’s writing that I didn’t enjoy.

The good? Both MC’s were in their 40’s.

My rec? Skip it.

I read this story in one sitting and I LOVED IT! I was immediately sucked into Declan's secret crush on Shota. I loved that both characters are in their 40s, something not seen very often. And then it's revealed that Declan is working on a stop motion film, and I gasped. I love stop motion. When I was younger (so very much younger) I received a Super 8 movie camera for Christmas one year and I loved making stop motion movies with it, using my Star Wars action figures. Poe's explanation of the process and the attention to detail was spot on, and this explanation helped explain Declan's character even more. This may be a short story, but it's a cup filled to the brim with discovery, intimacy, and a situation the characters work together to overcome. This is a sweet and tender love story perfect to warm your heart this holiday season. Highly recommended.

This was cute, almost too cute, but I enjoyed it. I didn't like the drama included at the end but I saw it coming, just hoping I was wrong . All ends well.

This little Christmas romance has a lot going for it. I always enjoy C.S Poe's writing. Declan and his crush are kind and romance even over such few pages is a sweet slow burn. Declan's romantic gesture and stop animation art form make this a extra special tale.

I could have done with out the jerk secondary character and the drama and just had more in falling in love time but good stuff overall.

Unicorn Christmas Review with *A Reader Obsessed*!

Love in 24 Frames is absolutely adorable was exactly what I expected from C.S. Poe. I read her advent tales faithfully every year and she has a real gift for writing short stories.

Declan is incredibly shy and his shyness is holding him back from his dream man who works at the studio that Declan rents to work on his stop motion animation project. Shota is charming and is subtley giving off interest vibes in Declan’s direction, but Declan is clueless and there’s no way he would believe that someone as incredibly lovely as Shota would be interested in him.

But, literally no one is as charming as a smitten Declan and through circumstances the two end up spending time together and Declan starts some actively wooing Shota and oh my, what an ideal wooing it was. Declan is quiet and sincere and Shota was perfect for him. Shota appreciated every little thing and everything about it made me happy.

I would have loved to dive into Shota’s life a little bit and to see a little redemption for him in the form of a Noah takedown, but all that would have derailed this from being a short story. The journey Declan and Shota took was such a treat and this one will be going on my Christmas reread list.

When Love in 24 Frames popped up on my screen by happy happenstance, I clicked it on home faster than you can say jingle all the way! I just read C.S. Poe’s Madison Square Murders a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t wait for more of her writing and characters.

This sweet, sweet read is filled with slow, getting to know you courting. Yes, I said courting. Haha…which I’m not sure I’ve ever said before, but the word seems to fit here. Shota and Declan are adorable to watch. They’re older and a bit lonely and oh-so ready for love. I would have liked a bigger unveiling of Declan’s film. But it still all added up to a big smile on my face.

A sweet holiday read to kickstart my season!

My initial reaction when I reached the ending… Urgh, why can't you add few more pages, author? Why? It's the holiday, be generous.

But yes, this one is charming. I adored Declan immediately. How could I not? He is crippled with his shyness, which results not being able to talk to Shota, a receptionist at the studio where Declan works on his creativity. My heart always loves this kind of characters. But Declan’s ‘gift’ for Shota is BRILLIANT. Oh, gosh, I want to hug that man so bad!

There’s a “villain” in this short story, which threatens to ruin the possibility of Declan and Shota’s relationship. I despise this kind of person – who just can’t stand the idea that someone may not interested. No worries, Declan and Shota still gets their HFN. Which points me to that first line of this review.

I NEED MORE PAGES!

Accountant Declan likes Shota, but is too shy to tell him...

A cute little story of a super shy CPA, who rents a studio to make “ stop action” films. He’s got a crush on the studio’s attendant, Shota, but too shy to speak up. A jealous man tries to cause trouble, but it backfires.
Enjoy !

Yes, Declan is shy... yes, he is adorable... yes, he deserves to get the man he is crushing on, BUT... let's NOT forget that Declan's story would not be possible without the wonderful Shota! *grin* ;D

Absolutely adorable! Declan is a dear, shy and introverted, wanting so much to have a simple conversation with Shota without stammering through his sentences. (Something I can so relate to!) And Shota, tender and patient with him, who, even after six months, hasn't given up on his crush. This is a sweet story of how these two gentle men find their way to each other. Happy sigh.

Love in 24 Frames is a short story about Declan Groves, a CPA, who makes amateur stop-motion films in his spare time. Currently he is making a film at a studio where Shota Watanabe is a receptionist. Declan plans to give the film to Shota for Christmas. It’s a thinly disguised story about himself and his unrequited love for Shota. The book is told in first person through Declan’s eyes.

I have never seen The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton, and thus I had no idea that the type of filmmaking used is called stop-motion. I also had zero clue of the dedication it requires to perform this unique artistry and that it took them three years to make that film. Once I learned that it takes twenty-four frames to make a single second of movie, I wasn’t all that surprised.

Declan’s hobby is stop-motion filmmaking and Shota happens to be the evening receptionist at the building where Declan rents studio space. Declan might be the shyest man I’ve ever seen and he has found it next to impossible to try to even begin a conversation with Shota. Declan is happy to simply be in love from afar and not even hope for anything more. He is mostly content with his accounting job during the day – “Numerical equations were much easier to handle than the human condition." – and at night he can indulge his artistic side while also viewing the object of his love.

Being incredibly shy my whole life I completely understand Declan's fears of beginning a conversation with Shota. Once I'm comfortable with someone you can't get me to shut up but taking those first few steps and words to getting to know someone is horrific for me, so I fell in love with Declan instantly. So nice to see a character like that without huge bags of angst weighing him down, just pure honest fear-inducing shyness. Shota desperately wanting to find that one question or statement that will get Declan talking is sweet, cute, heartwarming and put a smile on my face. Together they are a perfect fit if Declan takes that first step.

Love in 24 Frames is a wonderfully sweet, romantic, heart-filled short that will get you in the holiday mood and tick all your #ChristmasReads boxes. CS Poe's holiday tale may be short on quantity but its jam-packed in the quality department.

"I just couldn’t talk to him."

Painfully sigh and socially awkward, Declan has a massive crush on Shota. I loved how in the first scene he was all tongue tied and kicking himself. One could almost picture Shota wishing the older man would just approach him.

"Unrequited love was terrible."

Told from Declan's point of view, the reader is able to process his awkwardness and his need to become more approachable, but he can't. For six months, he'd been using his hobby to express his infatuation and was almost happy to keep it as such, until his art space buddy decided to make a play for Shota after exclaiming that Declan's wooing of Shota was "... sort of like the twelve days of Christmas." . What would it take for Declan to step up to the plate?

A cute short story. Needed a longer plot, but I understand the concept of these anthologies.

If you're in need of some holiday sweetness you've come to the right place!  C.S. Poe strikes again!!
And had me blubbering within the first few pages of this short story. Declan is so precious and so very very bad at socializing. (Aren't we all sometimes? :) sometimes you just gotta scream out in social awkwardness.) But reading Declan's voice and his thoughts I was immediately in love with him and wanted only the best things for him. His wistful, anguished pining just gets my heartstrings!

Within these few pages, C.S. Poe has written an intimate love story between two men brought closer by chance. Plus, she has also taken the chance to slip little nuggets of stop-motion animation facts into the story as well. I recommend Love in 24 Frames to get into the holiday spirit! Declan and Shota will steal your heart before they even kiss.

Okay, I'll stop hugging my tablet for a moment because I just have to tell you all about this beautiful holiday short! How is it that people are against such bubbly feelings? This story was so well developed and unique, yet sill gave me all the feels! I absolutely adored how Declan and Shota both had things that prohibited them from originally being upfront about their obvious attraction and chemistry, yet CS Poe makes sure both of those things are still felt to the reader.

Declan's anxieties were not only relateable, but made him twice as endearing. Add in a hard working Shota who has all the social skills but not a lot of time to express them, and the result was a very believable and sweet blossoming romance that was truly written in the stars!

I was provided an advanced ARC copy of this beautiful story in exchange for an honest review.

I so very much enjoyed this one. A shy accountant has a crush on the receptionist at the studio where he spends his evenings making a stop-motion movie about his feelings. A chance encounter outside their normal environment opens their eyes to the other’s feelings and what unfolds is such a beautiful, almost old-fashioned courtship.
As short stories go, this felt like it was longer - all the scenes felt complete though they were by force compact. And while our heroes barely kiss on page, I didn’t for one moment feel that this wasn’t a complete romance.

So well done in every way, excellent little Christmas story.

Because short stories have few pages, characters rarely develop, and I find it hard to rank them five hearts. C.S. Poe’s Love in 24 Frames is a delightful exception.

Declan Groves longs for Shota Watanabe with such simple clarity that I wished I could rub his aching heart. Men in their forties, an overlooked age group; we know if we were single at that age… Let’s just say, their shyness is entirely believable. Declan, who narrates, explains his reticence to approach Shota. “My social graces were about on par with that of a screaming opossum… Numerical equations were much easier to handle than the human condition.”

This accountant’s stress relief is the exactingly detailed hobby of stop-frame photography, where he pictures a puppet, moves it ¼ inch and takes another shot. 24 photos equal one second of film. And what is he creating? Since he can’t find words to reach hard-working Shota, he’s making a short film to say it for him.

Declan courts his beloved with the same attention to detail, in one of the most romantic slow-burns I’ve read. Great imagery helps readers fall in love with their courtship. When Declan is sad, he relates, “Without warning, the mood-matching weather started pouring over the city in a blinding sheet of freezing despondency.” Sigh.

For great writing, characters we hunger to meet, and an originally crafted, classic courtship, don’t miss ‘Love in 24 Frames.' This short is branded on my psyche and C.S. Poe is an author to watch.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Love in 24 Frames is a sweet novella that I read in one sitting. I liked that this is story about men in their 40s. I really liked that even I 48 years old, Declan is shy when it comes social situations and romance. I particularly liked the simple way that this romance unfolds. Love in 24 Frames is a lovely story.

Only one quibble, but I'll wait to update until I can do it on the laptop -- warning: it'll be a minor rant under spoiler tag about a secondary character.

OK, update to my review, under the promised spoiler tag:

Thank you, I feel much better after that rant. Absolutely loved the rest of the story, and I'd love to see the relationship develop. Three cheers for MCs in their 40s!

I hardly ever give a 5stars rating to a short story, but this one? This one was perfect!

The exact mix of hilarious (my social graces were about on par with that of a screaming opossum, hilarious), and endearing sweetness.

Declan is such a lovely character: sweet, patient, full of love. And I love that both, he and Shota, are forty-ish, hard-working men who are looking for something special in their lives.

I simply loved it :)
