A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

After decades of being loyal to lonely planet — I’m not loving the changes they have made to their format and information provided. This is more helpful as an overview book. Not helpful for the details of planning or the day to day while on your trip.

After our Louis and Clark cruise was canceled only 72 hours before the trip, my husband and I were “stranded” in Spokane having arrived a few days early to adjust to the time zone. I had bought this book on a whim and it quickly became a much needed friend with great advice on where to go and what to do in the area. We were inspired to rent a car and make our way on one of the scenic drives to our flight home leaving from Portland. Although we obviously didn’t have time to visit every location, I did read quite a bit of the book and learned a lot about this amazing part of the U.S. This book reads so easily that it hardly seems like a guide book. It’s more like talking with someone who really knows all of local sights, restaurants and hotels. This book saved our vacation!
