Discover the remarkable history of World War II... Free BONUS Inside! Until 1939, World War I was known as “the war to end all wars,” but when Nazi Germany capped its mounting aggression against its neighbors by invading Poland, Europe was plunged into a second global conflict that threatened the entire continent as well as the far-flung colonial possessions claimed by the French, British, and Dutch. German triumphs saw nation after nation fall until only Great Britain remained defiant against Hitler’s dreams of conquest. By late 1941, the United States was forced from neutrality into war after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Meanwhile Joseph Stalin’s Nonaggression Pact with the Germans became meaningless after Germany invaded the Soviet Union. In Europe, along the Eastern Front, and in the Pacific, the Allies battled the Axis Powers, and then, on D-Day, June 6, 1944, the invasion of Normandy brought the fighting closer and closer to Berlin. In the Pacific, the Allies fought the Japanese island by island in bloody battles where the bodies of fallen soldiers attested to the Japanese willingness to die for their emperor. Untested American President Harry Truman had to decide whether to continue the fighting in the conventional manner and allow more American troops to be slaughtered in battle, or to use a new and devastating secret weapon to bring the war to a cataclysmic conclusion. This book is exactly what I was looking for, a quick summary/refresher on World War II because high school was a long time ago, college as well but also a blur and I don't think I paid too much attention in history class anyway :) so this was a very good refresher.
I never studied history either at secondary school or university and have always been rather ignorant of World War 2. My interest was sparked by students from Tarawa in Kiribati, which was previously known as the Marshall Islands. The kids talked casually about all the rusting military equipment in the jungle. I have finally got to read of the events of WW2 in a short format in this work and have thoroughly appreciated the way it is presented.
I really recommend this work to others seeking an 8ntelligent summary of this important event in our history.
World War II was more complex and lethal than WWI, and was a group of battles mainly fought in Europe and Pacific Ocean region, deadliest among them being Atom Bomb attack on Japan in 1945. This war witnessed a bunch of autocratic rulers rising up from the wounds of World War I which was left untreated and fighting for every inch of land. This brief account precisely sheds light on the major occurences of WWII. Undoubtedly a great read!!
Very readable, but also breezes through events that each individually deserve a book unto themselves. Ultimately accomplishes what it sets out to do: narrate World War II in an hour of reading. Next I hope to find a more in-depth book that is still novice-friendly.
