Cancer, I'll Give You One Year: A Non-Informative Guide To Breast Cancer, A Writer's Memoir In Almost Real Time is not about eating kale. The book is 100% narrative nonfiction and 0% self-help. It was actually written for the author’s children in case she died. This sounds morbid, but maybe “pointed” and “candid” are better words. Embracing candor as an aesthetic, this ...more

This book, as advertised, it not your typical cancer book. You aren't going to get any advice about how to not get cancer, how to deal with having cancer, or how to deal with a friend or loved-one having cancer. Instead, you get the actual thoughts and actions of a woman going through cancer. As it's happening. I found it incredibly compelling. I was totally engrossed in every page. This book is like no other memoir I've ever read. And I mean that in the BEST way possible. Jennifer has one of the most unique, honest writing styles I've ever seen, and I LOVE it. Obviously, Jennifer is one of my favorite authors. I have read all of her books, but this one is her first non-fiction book, written in mostly real time. From the diagnosis, through the surgeries, chemo and radiation, the mistakes, and the triumphs, this book is heart-wrenching and yet full of humor and grace.

The photos add so much to the reality of the situation. Whether or not you have cancer, you know of someone who is dealing with cancer or you're just interested in knowing what it is to be

I have to promote this book because it's something truly special. I don't write book reviews. Call it writing anxiety - my college career was riddled with it. But I know a good thing when I see it.
