You've got to love a book that hooks you from start to finish. Ashley Farley's newest book, Lies That Bind did just that for me, so much so that I read the entire book in just a few hours.
For 10 years, Eva has wondered whether her daughter, Reese, is still alive. Eva's husband was driving Reese home from college over Thanksgiving when they were in a single-car accident and he was killed, but Reese was nowhere to be found at the scene of the accident. Did someone kidnap her? Did she flee the scene for some reason? These are questions Eva has wanted to know the answer to for far too long, but she's never given up hope.
Maggie is moving from Oregon to Richmond, Virginia, where her new husband will be working. She got married on the rebound after the end of a long-term relationship, and her family all thought she did so far too soon. Eric is a good provider and seems like a stable man, but shortly after she arrives in Richmond she discovers that what seems too good to be true often is. What Eric wants more than anything is for Maggie to have a baby, but she's not ready—she wants to pursue a career as an investigative journalist. Quickly, though, Maggie realizes Eric will stop at nothing to ensure he gets what he wants.
One snowy day Maggie meets Eva, who lives across the street from her and Eric. Maggie is utterly transfixed when she hears about Reese's disappearance, and when Eric's controlling behavior becomes physically abusive, she decides to go undercover to track Reese's whereabouts. Her investigative work takes her from Virginia to Ohio to Washington, DC, as she tries to figure out what happened the day of the accident, what possibly could have made her flee, and more importantly, what would have kept her away all these years?
While the plot of Lies That Bind isn't necessarily unique, it builds on lots of twists and turns and secrets, so I'm going to stop my summary here. Farley has created some complex, flawed, fascinating characters, and there's lots of emotion and thought-provoking events to be had. I really couldn't get enough of this story. This isn't a thriller, although there are suspenseful elements, but more than that, it's just a great story.
I first became familiar with Farley after her last book, Life on Loan, which also completely captivated me, but in a different way. Lies That Bind has definitely cemented my status as a fan.
I'm so grateful to be part of the blog tour for Lies That Bind. Kate Rock Book Tours and Leisure Time Books provided me with an advance copy of the book in exchange for an unbiased review. Thanks for making it available!
Ashley Farley is one of my favorite authors! She can definitely write characters that you will love, admire, and would want to become friends with in real life! This is an emotional story that gripped me right from the very beginning. I love that!
The story was told in three point of views of three amazingly strong women, Eva, Reese and Maggie. Each had their own stories and their reason to keep their lies going. All three characters were realistic, broken, and trying to deal with their issues of alcoholism, abuse, and other real life serious situations. Eva dealing with the tragic loss of her spouse and the disappearance of her daughter. Reese and continues to struggle just to hold on. Reese the daughter disappears for ten years, and Maggie an investigative reporter who was also a newly wed marries a man she thought she knew.
The story was engrossing and deep. Farley never disappointed me and will remain one of my top authors.
Despite the difficult situations our characters go through, the book was really about hope that will have you rooting for these women. What a great read for me. I highly recommend this book!
Lies That Bind is a rollercoaster of a ride! When I have a new Ashley Farley book, I know I'm not going to get any sleep because her books are "stay up all night til you finish" good. I can't wait to see what she writes next!
Thank you Kate Rock and the author for a complimentary copy. I voluntarily reviewed this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Lies That Bind By: Ashley Farley
*REVIEW* 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5 Have you ever considered the various odd and seemingly mundane bits and pieces of life improbably connecting one stranger to another? More often than not, these connections are inconsequential. Sometimes, though, they are profound and life changing. In Lies That Bind, three women, Eva, Reese and Maggie, have lived very different lives, but they share commonalities none are aware of -yet. Eva has endured her share of great tragedy and turns to alcohol for comfort. Maggie married a man who has become an abusive monster. Reese made rash decisions that resulted in unimaginable consequences. Events bring these women together, and questions lead to shocking answers affecting each woman. In their individual despair they discover shared grief. Pain is pain is pain. Will Eva, Reese and Maggie use their new found knowledge for healing, or does the downward spiral continue? This is a touching story of loss, love, despair and consequences. Touching on a number of serious issues, including alcoholism, abuse and unplanned pregnancy, Ashley Farley handles these topics with sensitivity. I was amazed at the subtle weaving of one life with another until the picture became clear. The range of emotions is vast because the story deals with so many relatable situations. The characters are authentic, and I felt as if I had actually met Eva, Reese and Maggie by the end of the story. Lies That Bind is my second read by Ashley Farley, and it won't be my last. I enjoy her work and highly recommend.
Ashley Farley has done it again! This is an intricately woven story of three women whose lives intersect to take you on a wild journey. We have Eva whose husband died in a car accident and whose nineteen year old daughter disappeared. Maggie who lives across the street from Eva and married a man who is not who he seems, and Reese, the daughter who vanished ten years ago. This story is told from these three women's points of view. This story is filled with secrets and lies. It is also filled with love and family dynamics. This book kept me enthralled throughout. The characters are true to life and I felt like I knew them all, even the secondary characters like Raimi and Clara. Incredibly well written and fast paced, you won't want to put this book down. I could talk on and on about how good this book is. At times you will be saying, OMG, did that just happen. I felt such strong emotions throughout, pain, sadness and happiness. Ashley Farley really knows how to pull you into a story and keep you turning the pages. Don't miss this one!
I was given an ARC of this book to read and give my honest review.
Ashley Farley is a master at creating characters that capture your heart. The characters in this book are no different. Reese (Anna), Eva, and Maggie are three women that life has thrown curveballs at. They make you want to pull your hair out at the choices they make, but at the same time hug them and shelter them. Lies That Bind is a look into the lives of three women who are facing hardship because of life choices. On more than one occasion I was holding my breath with heart racing while reading this book. I also found myself thinking about my life choices and how it has not only affected myself, but the people around me. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope we will be seeing more stories involving these three women.
If there's one thing I know to be true about Ashley Farley's writing style it's that she knows how to create realistic and authentic characters that capture the heart. Lies That Bind is the story of three women, Reese, Eva & Maggie who have all been dealt cards that have forced them to make tough decisions. Throughout the story we learn more about each of these women, along with several other interesting individuals. Serious issues including abuse, alcoholism and unplanned pregnancy all come into play.
I thoroughly enjoyed Lies That Bind. This was my second of Ashley Farley's books that I've read and definitely won't be my last.
Thank you to Kate Rock Book Tours and Ashley Farley for my review copy.
2.5* I'm conflicted on how to review this novel. I enjoyed some elements of the story, but I felt the author rushed through certain parts or skimmed over significant events that normally would leave a person feeling traumatized. And, because of this, it was hard to connect to the characters. Just an ok read for me
I finished up Lies That Bind by Ashley Farley last night and I’m still thinking about it as I finish up my morning coffee. This isn’t your typical warm and fuzzy women’s fiction novel. When I first glanced at the front cover, that’s what I was expecting. Just a fun, feel good story about three women’s lives. Oh boy, this novel is SO much more than that. Yes, this is a beautiful story about how three women come together, support one another and form a strong and fundamental connection. But it also contains some real life grit with serious topics like spousal abuse, rape, alcoholism, drug addiction, and depression. This story will move you and have you thinking about the characters long after you finish reading it. If you’re in the mood for a quick read with some substance and suspense, I highly recommend this one.
Ashley Farley has done it again! She has woven a beautiful, heartfelt story of three strong and independent women that will grab you from the very first words and draw you in until the very end. Her stories are always full of great characters that become like friends to me. I love reading her books but I am always a little sad when they are done. I thoroughly love my time in her worlds.
Lies That Bind is a story that will capture your attention.... and your heart. Reese, Eva, and Maggie are three women, each with their own troubles and issues, whose lives become intertwined and complicated. As they work to help each other, their bonds becomes unbreakable.
I highly recommend Lies That Bind and consider it a must-read for everyone. I know you are going to love, just like I did.
Set aside a day to just read this! You will be engrossed in the plot at page one!
Wow! Suspense, mystery, family dysfunction, love and friendship are all yours in this novel! I love my new friends! Reese, Eva, and Maggie are three strong women with many similarities; each having run from life's hardships to survive. There is so much heartache causing anger, pain, hopelessness and fear in their lives. Will these ladies get past the trauma's they have experienced and outrun? Can they move on when their past is trying to claim them?
I could not stop reading, nor could I stop thinking of this book. I would love to have a peek into the continued lives of these beautiful characters in the future. Definitely one of my favorites!
his was my first book I've read by this author and I was blown away! It was amazing and I've already added a bunch of her books to my tbr.
First I loved how the story was told from multiple points of view, the different prespectives and ways the stories intertwined added to my enjoyment of the novel. Reese has been missing for 10 years. Her father was killed in a car accident on his way home for Christmas break after picking Reese up from College. Reese was no where to be found, it was like she vanished. Could she possibly still be alive 10 years later?
Maggie, has rushed into a new marriage to her rebound man. She's quickly discovering he may not be the man she thought he was. Maggie begins to realize she has some tough life choices to make, if she plans to survive this marriage. Eva, Reese's mother, still has hope that her daughter is still alive, so much do that she still has her Christmas tree up 10 years later. Eva wasn't always the perfect mother struggling with depression and turning to alcohol and prescription pills to help ease her pain.
Maggie and Eva meet, Maggie's investigative journalist background makes her become intrigued by Eva's and Reese's story. Eva helps Maggie out in ways you least would expect, so Maggie promises she will find out what happened to Reese.
Is Reese still alive, will Maggie discover what really happened that night in college? Will Eva be able to overcome her addiction and heal knowing what became of Reese? Maggie's husband, who is he really? This is one book full of twists and turns you need to read to believe it all yourself. A fast paced unputdownable family drama that I would highly recommend!
This is by far my favorite Ashley Farley book. I’ve loved and enjoyed several but this one is best in my opinion. It touches on so many things. From happiness, abuse, alcoholism, death, identity stealing, rape, disappearances, unexpected pregnancy and even in my opinion taking advantage of a person who is drinking and taking something. It has a lot going on but easy to follow.
This book starts out strong and keeps building until you find out everything you could possibly want to know about each character. It’s told from Maggie, Reese and Eva’s points of view. Things that are going on in all of their lives. The death of Eva’s husband and subsequent disappearance of her daughter set her on the road to almost self destruct while also running a business. Maggie leaving her family to follow the man she marries across the country to start a new life only to find things are not as they always appear. What will become of her. Reese, the daughter who has gone missing. Eva’s daughter. Her story was one that truly captivated me from the start and held me to the very end. I think she was possibly my favorite character. She sure had a lot going on in her days. What became of her?
This book has wonderful characters. The scenes make you feel like you are there with each person. From the beginning to the terror that Eva has to go through it will hold you. It’s told in a way that you just don’t want to let go. You want to know what happens and what is going to happen. It even has a little bit of a thriller aspect to it.
Ashley Farley has definitely outdone herself with this book in my opinion. It’s great.
Thank you to #ashelyfarley for this ARC for my complete and honest review. This is my own opinion.
I gave it 5 stars and a high recommendation. It’s truly so good.
Ashley Farley is such a wonderful storyteller. This book is filled with emotion and suspense right up until the very end. Well worth the read. I thank the Author for the opportunity to read and review this book.
It’s hard to wait between Ashley Farley books as each one is better than the last. They all become my favorites! I really enjoyed the ladies from this one and the various struggles they were faced with. This one has a lot of suspense with an abusive husband, a missing daughter, alcoholism and the journey through the lives of these women; once seeming weak and now learn to be strong. Enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks to the author for the ARC for my honest review.
I usually really enjoy Ashley Farley’s book but this one was a total mess. There were so many plots going on that none of them really gelled and it was difficult to get invested in any of them or the characters.
Ashley Farley is a wonderfully gifted creator of stories that draw the reader in and then holds them through every page to the very end. The title alone has a mysterious essence to it and made me wonder what kind of lies can a character keep that would bind them. I was ready to open this book and see what this mystery is all about. I have read several of Ashley Farley's books and looked forward to this one knowing it would be a great read. And a great read it was.
There is no slowing down in this book once I started reading it. The story slides so easily between the chapters that are focused on one of the three main characters of the book, Maggie, Reese and Eva. Each one with life or personal issues that families can struggle through. Each character found places in my heart and I felt the emotional pain as they fought to find their way. Ms. Farley has a knack of touching on the issues with compassion and heart but yet convey the hardships that can be truly difficult to overcome. This has a way of making me feel for the characters and wanting the best for them. But so many secrets and lies...that make this drama unfold.
The details in her stories are so perfectly written that I felt I was experiencing the events as she masterfully reveals each next scene. Each chapter builds upon the previous to take the suspense to the edge. The characters were ones I felt I could know in my own life. The problems were real and the answers were hard. There were connections between them that brought hope to each situation and built friendships and healing. Would they overcome the lies that bound them, tho? It's hard to face the truth and admit the pain or to forget the past.
This book has a bit of everything in it for me. Women who have real life dilemmas to work through, suspense, mystery, intrigue and a plot that didn't stop. Forgiveness, love and compassion that draw the best out of the characters. This made for a read that will stick with me for a long time as another unforgettable Ashley Farley novel. I highly recommend her books and this one is no exception. Great story!!
I want to thank Ashley Farley for the honor of reading this wonderful book. All opinions and thoughts are my heartfelt own. A five star all the way.
This is the first book I’ve read by the author I definitely plan on reading more of her books. After reading this one Ashley Farley gained a new fan in me.
This was a great read that I flew through in two nights. The story goes back in forth from present time to 10 years in the past. The chapters alternate between the 3 main character’s Reese, Eva, and Maggie. Each of these ladies have made decisions that have altered their own lives and the lives of other characters forever. These choices have not been easy to live with, as time goes on each woman must confront the choices they’ve made and decided what to do to fix and/or improve their situation.
From start to finish this book captured my attention. I appreciate the way Farley ties up all the loose ends to the story I felt satisfied with each character’s ending.
Thank you to Ashley Farley and Kate Rock Book Tours for my ARC of Lies That Bind in exchange for an honest review
This is my favorite book by this author! I have enjoyed all of her books but something about the little bit of mystery regarding Reese put it over the top for me. I didn't want to put the book down and even managed to read a chapter or two during slow times at work. I did stay up a little to late the first night, I should have started the book earlier that evening.
The women in this story have much to overcome - alcoholism, unplanned pregnancy, fear, abuse, and so much more. The answers are never easy to find and each story is woven into another to create a beautiful tale of hope.
I don't know that I can choose a favorite character, all of the women have their assets and faults, yet each character finds an inner strength they didn't realize that was in them and this is what makes this story heartwarming.
I don't think you will be disappointed when you read this book.
Thank you to the author Ashley Farley and Kate Rock Book Tours for the copy in exchange for an honest review.
Ashley Farley writes amazing stories, and in those stories, amazing characters. Lies That Bind tells the stories of three women - Eva, Reese, and Maggie, and all three have their own struggles and story, yet are connected. Eva is struggling with the death of her husband and disappearance of her daughter 10 years ago, and Maggie moves in across the street. They become close, and as Maggie is dealing with an abusive husband, her interest is peaked by Eva's story. She decides to investigate, and that's when all three of their stories are woven together.
I had a hard time putting this book down, because I NEEDED to know what happened! The ending tied everything together for the most part, although a few things seemed a bit too coincidental. A great story overall, as I enjoyed reading it!
First, I’d like to give a shout-out to my Mommom who was the one to actually recommend this book to me. I love that she contributed to my never ending tbr. And the fact that this was her recommendation because Lies That Bind was SO entertaining.
This was like reading the script for a Lifetime movie. One where there’s so much drama that all you can do is sit back with your huge bowl of popcorn and watch it all burn. We get 3 women’s POV in this story: Reese, Eva, & Maggie. I loved that each women’s stories intertwine with one another, so we can get in the mind of each character as events played out. I really felt for each woman and the hardships they were going through, separately and together. There were times that I felt like some of the scenes were TOO out there or too dramatic, but it was still very entertaining. 3.5 ⭐️ (rounded up to 4)
Ashley Farley is a tremendously gifted author! Lies That Bind is a very emotional story centering on three strong women. They each face different issues, but their lives become interconnected. I was engrossed in the story from the beginning and I wish I could have read it straight through, as it was difficult to put it down and carry on with life. The characters of Eva, Reese and Maggie were on my mind when I was not able to read. That is a sign of a great book, when the characters remain with you. While this was not an easy read, since the characters face real-life serious situations, it is a journey worth taking. You will cheer for these strong women to overcome their current state and move on to a happier future. I recommend Lies That Bind very highly. I want to thank Leisure Time Books and Ashley Farley for allowing me to read this wonderful book! My review is my own opinion, not influence by receiving the ARC.
Three women have made choices in their lives that seem to be right for them, but are in reality lies. There is Eva, a mother barely holding on after her husband dies and her teenage daughter Reese disappears. Reese, the daughter who chooses to disappear for reasons of her own. And finally, Maggie who marries quickly on the rebound to a man she thought she knew and loved. Alcoholism, abuse and teenage angst are all in this book by Ashley Farley. As the lives of Eva, Maggie and Reese become intertwined, it becomes clear that each woman must trust in herself and finally in each other to be the right choice for their lives. The author makes each page in this excellent story come alive with the hope that the despair that each of these women experience is not the end, but rather the beginning. I received an ARC from the author and the review and comments are my honest opinion.
If you are a fan, as I am, of Ashley Farley's books, you will notice this book is a little different than her others. From the first few paragraphs I was totally hooked and as I got further into the book absolutely loved the element of suspense. This is about Maggie, an investigative reporter, and a newlywed who moves across the country with her new husband. It's about Eva, a wife and mother who struggles with addition and it's about Reese, a teenage girl who simply disappears for ten years. The lives of these very different women are so cleverly woven together and the circumstances they experience are both sometimes scary and other times heartwarming. Maggie makes an almost unbelievable discovery that her new husband isn't at all the man she thought he was. Eva's addictive behavior drives her family away, including her daughter, Reese who after one semester of college disappears. Clara and Raimi come into the picture and play an important role in reminding us what it means to be family. This book is a page-turner and will probably keep you up too late, but in the end, it will fill your heart.
Have you ever finished a book and then dreamt about it after? 🙋🏻♀️ no, just me? Haha well this book by Ashley Farley did just that for me.
I was hooked from page one with all of the suspense/mystery and of course family dysfunction. I felt connected to the three strong characters; Reece, Eva and Maggie with each their own hardships and how they interconnect with one another. I wished I could have read it in it’s entirety in only one sitting because it was so hard to stop reading but now I wished it didn’t have to end, I already miss those characters. The author is a fantastic storyteller and I look forward to reading more by her.
Ashley Farley has done it again - written a book with realistic characters in a story that you can't put down until the last page is turned. This one kept me up way past bed time and it was well worth the lack of sleep to see how it all ended.
All three women in this novel are written very realistically with good and bad parts to their personalities. They are all broken by different things in life but they are all the same as they struggle to find their way back to normalcy in life. This book deals with subjects of alcoholism, unwanted pregnancy, adoption and physical abuse. Despite some of the subjects, the overall feelings of the book are love and hope for reconciliation.
I have read all of the books by this author and this is my new favorite. The characters in this book are so well written that they won't soon be forgotten and hopefully will show up again in a future book.
Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
This was another excellent read by Ms. Farley. She has a way of creating characters that you really care about them. However, I have a hard time accepting a daughter allowing her mother the mental agony of not knowing what happened to her daughter for ten years. I understand the bad relationship between mother and daughter, but allowing her mother to go through the death of her husband and a missing daughter was cruel. This is still a great read, as are all of Ms. Carey's books that I have read.
I received this book from the Author a while back. It somehow got pushed behind some others so a bit late in reading. That being said Author Ashley Farley does a great job with a second chance story. She weaves the story of 3 women all with secrets and lies together masterfully. Eva a mother suffering from depression after the birth of her child. she suffered for years and the daughter Reese takes the brunt of her actions. Reese disappears when headed home for thanksgiving from college with her father after a deadly crash where her father is killed. Maggie who thought she had it all until one night when she is abused by her husband. The story melds together with a fantastic ending. If you enjoy second chance stories this is the one for you.
Ashley Farley created a dynamic story filled with so much emotion. I rejoiced with her characters as well as cried alongside them as events unfolded. My favorite part of this book was the characters. The ladies of this book found themselves in hard times, and every time I predicted their reaction I was happily wrong. Lies that Bind is an incredible story of overcoming abuse and rebuilding an authentic life. I would love a sequel!
Good book, easy read. The author did a fantastic job establishing a connection between the characters and the reader, making the characters very relatable. The storyline was very predictable, something I expect we will see on Lifetime Movie Network sometime in the future.
