Rate this book
Vincent Kompany relives a spectacular and unique season for Manchester City, in which as club captain he led the Blues to a unique Treble success of Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup triumphs. Told from his unique viewpoint, this is the definitive account of a remarkable campaign.

After Manchester City had won the Premier League title in 2018, collecting a record number of points along the way, the pressure was on for them to go one better in 2019 - but instead they went two better, winning every single major domestic trophy, starting with the Community Shield. In this frank and compelling book, Kompany tells the dramatic story of Manchester City's record-breaking season . In the league, they faced a formidable challenge from Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool that went all the way to the final game of the campaign. He takes the reader behind the scenes, to give them an insight into how manager Pep Guardiola inspired them and came up with the right decisions at the right time; he explains what made his team-mates, from Aguero up front to Ederson in goal, so special; and, having scored a spectacular thunderbolt of a goal to virtually secure the title, he explains how and why he decided that the time had come to move on from the club he had adorned for more than a decade.

Vincent Kompany is a club legend, and now he has delivered an account of a special season that will be treasured by City fans everywhere.

Treble Triumph is Vincent Kompany’s inside account of Manchester City’s historic 2022/23 season, when Pep Guardiola’s side swept to the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League to complete an unprecedented treble. Told with the calm authority of City’s former captain, Kompany offers both a celebration of the achievement and an exploration of the relentless standards behind it.

The book captures the rhythm of the campaign in detail, from early frustrations and mid-season challenges to the imperious form that carried City past Arsenal in the title race and into history. Match reports are complemented by behind-the-scenes perspectives, with Kompany highlighting the tactical intelligence, discipline, and unity that defined Guardiola’s squad.

Kompany’s narrative is not just about trophies but about identity. He reflects on how the treble symbolizes the culmination of a decade-long project at City, where investment, culture, and coaching fused to create one of the greatest sides English football has seen. His admiration for Guardiola and players like Haaland, De Bruyne, and Gundogan shines through, but so does his respect for the often-overlooked squad members who contributed in quieter ways.

While celebratory in tone, the book occasionally edges toward the polished and official, leaving little room for controversy or deep critique. Readers looking for personal vulnerability or candid dressing-room drama may find it a little restrained compared with other sporting memoirs.

Nonetheless, Treble Triumph succeeds as both a memento for supporters and a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence. It serves as a reminder not only of the goals, victories, and silverware, but of the collective mentality that made history possible. For Manchester City fans in particular, Kompany’s book is an essential keepsake of a once-in-a-lifetime season.

This could have been so much better. Probably written too soon after the event - and is really more of a blow by blow account of matches.

Leader

Heroic achievement by a heroic leader - the domestic treble has been overlooked by the mainly red-following media. I was one of those who shouted 'don't shoot'...
